    I grew up in Lumberton and as a white person, I can tell you that one of the most beautiful things ever is the Lumbee Indian dialect. It is a language they speak and identify with. Many of their words were absorbed into the local white dialect like the word "mommock". I heard my mother use it often along with other words she grew up hearing and incorporating into her everyday conversations. Recently when my wife was in the emergency room at the local hospital, the nurse had long conversations with us and it took about one minute to recognize she was a Lumbee Indian and still lived in Robeson County. It was so gratifying to hear her talk, I hugged her and expressed my gratitude to her for taking care of my wife.
    As a young boy working with my Dad installing tobacco curers, I had the opportunity to listen to a Lumbee Indian describe his encounter with a highway patrolman. This is as close to his actual pronunciation of the words I can get but will tell you now, they were great and something I hope to remember for the rest of my life. "Ah was a ridding down the haghway and this here haghway petroleum rid up aside me and blew his syringe rat in my year." Translation - I was riding down the highway and a highway patrolman rode up beside me and turned on his siren in my ear.
    Another example a couple of years ago was when I was shopping for some office equipment in a local warehouse. The owner was busy helping another customer and I immediately recognized his dialect and knew he was a Lumbee Indian from Robeson County. He asked the owner if he was "retard". Music to my ears because I knew he meant "retired". Another word that can be unrecognizable by outsiders is the word "rinse". For all his live, my Dad said "wrench". "Did you 'wrench' the wet towel out yet?"
    The mixed use of local dialects made the Robeson County residents a little unique and even though the proper use of grammar may not suit outside ears, for most of us who grew up in Robeson County years ago, it is still music to our ears and most welcome anytime the opportunity to hear it arises.

      Okay let's be 100% honest here lumbees have no language and no belief system they can hold up historical archaeology. On top of this predominantly the community when DNA tested was 60+% African and 22+% European with most being 2% or less Native American.
      What does this all mean? They are undeniably NOT I Native American Tribe in any shape fashion or form.
      the other things that hurt them so much as the fact that they change their name multiple times since 1911 they called themselves Croatan, Cherokee, Cheraw, Indians of Robeson County, Siouan and now Lumbee.
      so if they're actually at Rob why continuously change your name trying to get Federal recognition???
      This is very simple it's all for money. Don't let them fool you into thinking they just want recognition. They won't the Federal gland that they'll be given along with the casinos they can put on it so that they can make money that's what this is about. Accept it will never happen because they're not Native American as their DNA clearly shows. They are African and European mixed along with Asian Indian with an average across the board who have tested that are 2% or less Native American.

    For all you guys using the genetic test results to call Lumbees not native:
    "In a calculation I made of the available data, I discovered that of the 944 Lumbee males whose Y-chromosomes were tested overall, 547 of them showed a result which came back as “Unknown Origin,” meaning that these genetic markers could not be matched to any European, African or other populations accounted for within the database (2008). Thus, the total percentage of Lumbee males whose results came back as either Indigenous American or of Unknown Origin (unlikely European or African) was actually 62 percent, meaning only 38 percent of those men tested were highly likely to have had an African or European paternal ancestor. Furthermore, it’s essential to remember that this test accounts only for male ancestors. A Lumbee man could have a mother, grandmother and so on who were exclusively Indigenous and this would not be visible using Y-Chromosome testing (Truong, 2016)"
    m.facebook.com/notes/rachel-waters/bloody-lies-the-dangerous-frontier-of-genetic-ancestry-testing-in-the-battle-to-/10154991544918986/
    There's plenty of proof showing they are a native group, going back hundreds of years. Feel free to read or cling tightly to your biases, it doesn't change who we are.

    • @sammehluv
      @sammehluv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "In the US and Canada, very few indigenous groups have submitted their DNA to these databases, meaning that the genetic profiles - which most scientists agree are very regionally diverse - have not been mapped for most North American peoples (2016). Thus, these tests which seek to match haplotypes and SNPs of indigenous peoples without Mayan, Peruvian or Amazonian ancestry will frequently return with a result showing “Unknown Origin” (Truong, 2016). "

      Native Americans descend from first interbreeds of Lumbee's European ancestors in Asia, then migrated from Asia to America. Later this European ancestors interbreed with Africans also, because this people are less racists than any other in the world and they accept anyone as their own race. They get most hate everywhere because they descend from real, Indigenous, Europeans; victims of genocide for centuries. Most of actual Europeans are not real Indigenous, but invaders got lighter skin by interbreed with Indigenous Europeans.
      Lumbee are also called Croatan; people from Croatia, a European state, descend from oldest, Indigenous, Europeans (those who by interbreed in Asia created Native Americans' race).

    2:26 "Recognize someone is from Spain because they speak Spanish, you recognize somebody is French because they speak French." Well, yeah, but can you tell a man speaking Spanish isn't from one of a dozen countries who also speak Spanish? Can you tell if a man speaking French is from Quebec and not Paris? Of course people FROM those countries can, but I'd ask that gentlemen the above questions.

    They spoke like this because our languages was took from us. It's sad it's called Lumbee languages. We had no other choice. It's Great Britain English language. Our people are still trying to speak this language. Squash, potato, chocolate is Native American Language. Our dialect doybd country because English is not our language.

      That's because there is no Lumbee language . They are not native Americans. No native DNA whatsoever

      So are the lumbee are native? I keep seeing ppl say they are mixed with black blood. My friends mom is 100 percent lumbee and she looks 100 percent native

    • @johngarnergarner6724
      @johngarnergarner6724 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's because there was no Lumbee language. The Lumbees are not a native American tribe. And that's pretty easy to prove. Just take a DNA test. You'll find very little native American DNA in the Lumbees.

      The Lumbees are not native Americans. Just take a DNA test. Pretty simple

    None of them look like Native Americans. They look like African Americans. I would not have called any of them Native Americans.

      I suppose that the ancestors of the Lumbee began to marry whites in the late 1500's. And they abandoned their way of life and culture, including the language. However, a sentence in a Native American language was preserved by a Lumbee family.

    That guy at the end trying to give this so called “language” credibility by saying in some cases we were punished. Trying to make it sound like how real natives in boarding school got punished for speaking native languages smh.

      How do you know this? What is your proof? Opinions don't count. I don't know if you have had the pleasure of knowing a Lumbee but we absolutely could care less what you or anyone else thinks about us. Have a wonderful night.

    Thank God I was raised to be proud of my African ancestry and told I was descended from female warriors of West Africa.
    I couldn’t imagine passing myself off as another race and trying so desperately to be seen as a race I don’t belong to.
    Sounds like Lumbees have a bad case of Rachel Dolezalism and Buffy St. Marieism.

    "He be doing this and he be doing that" is just lazy ghetto grammar. It isn't a dialect. Lumber English is just bad grammar with a slightly different southern country accent.
