That part of a person should only come out when it's truly warranted--like to protect yourself and someone you love from being killed or grievously injured.

The kid didn't transform. The "monster" is a personified emotion, the anger that was growing inside of the kid after hearing and witnessing his father hurt his mother, hence the "let me out" that the monster told the child. Of course the kid was afraid of that because he's not a bad person, but all these moments of abuse have led to pent up hatred that culminated into self-defense, though violent.
