This is for you Sean. We lost you 16 years today. We listened to this album non stop at your house when it came out. This song was always an end of the night closer in a smoke hugging the ceiling filled room at Club Ward. We miss you around here. I love you my brother rest easy. Riverland Gang Forever!!
Out there on its own, stretching out into the cosmic infinity… I will not be denied. Baby yeah. Never bettered. Incredible tune. The nadir of MM 🙌🙌🙌🙌🤘🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
To each their own, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Having said that, I believe that their music suffered from McBain’s departure. Gone were the long space jams that are right up my alley. They were replaced with a more “rock and roll” sound that can be kind of generic in my opinion, and no where near as unique or experimental. Also McBain had a certain tunefulness that they lacked later on. He got “out there” and “heavy” without playing the same distorted power chords every other band in the world uses. Their more “rock” material can border on “cock rock” and at times can be downright cheesy. I don’t think their later material was necessarily bad, but as the focus shifted from long psychedelic jams to shorter conventional song structures my interest waned. Early on they sounded like a group of dudes just “going for it”. Exploring the outer limits of the droney psych jam. They created fresh and exciting sonic landscapes and they had a sound that while influenced by early Pink Floyd and Hawkwind was unique and all their own. Nobody else sounded like Monster Magnet. Later on, the material was more conventional and the material was simplified. Over time it became more and more about Wyndorf’s persona and his singing was much more prominent than before. Now there are hundreds of bands doing similar things. Certainly they were one of the first “stoner rock” bands but fuzzed out 70’s rock isn’t exactly a style that they alone created. Of course, Ed Mundell can fucking rip, but I much prefer McBain’s more atmospheric Syd Barrett style textural landscapes. I guess what it boils down to is: Monster Magnet are no doubt pioneers in their genre and continue to be a good band. They do what they do well. But there are many, many bands doing a similar thing. TAB/Spine of God-era Monster Magnet didn’t sound like anyone else. It was unique and artistically progressive.
Space jam’s are under the banner of rock’n’roll and they did not get “simpler” or less unique as they went on. Their identity evolved into something that wasn’t for you i.e.: they became broader than space rock.
one of the best albums in the 90's. not too many people ever heard of. the spine of god, baby. have a beer in one hand and other hand (puff the magic dagron).
the one and only time i ever saw Monster Magnet, i was in high school and they were touring for superjudge, with raging slab opening, and there was a crowd of like 20 people in the club, and both bands played there asses off, and Dave and the band hung out after the show and were super cool. to this day, one of my favorite shows i saw as a teen.
Dear Uploader, As a Monster Magnet fan who is also a reader of Marquis De Sade and a ordained SubGenius Minister I just want to say that we should probably grab a beer sometime.
Whenever i listen to this song i feel like God is whispering all the universe's secrets into my ear and i become massive and omnipotent, i see everything that has happened, everything happening right now and everything that will happen and my mind is at peace.
Yes it is. :) Monster Magnet is just a great band plain and simple. They rank right up there with Zep, Sabbath, Floyd, and the other great ones on my list. 8)
They are also one of the big ones for me. Right up there with AC/DC, Priest and Sabbath! Will be seeing them for around the 6th time next week :) I also got to meet all of the band except for Dave :( at an aftershow party a couple of years back. They were all very friendly, down to earth guys!
I was always missing spine of god in my MM collection. Now that i finally have it i now understand what everyone else has been saying about this album. ORGASMIC

Thank you, I really do appreciate that. I did put a lot of effort into this video to try to capture the spirit of the song with the slides I used...because I love the band and especially this song.
I hear ya.Being a teen at the time this is all i listened too. Dark nights laying in bed with the lights off stoned just soaking up my thoughts without one depressing thing to think about. Cant do that now seeing this world has a grip on my ass being older!!! But still listen from time to time. Thanks for posting!!
If you guys are “in the know” about what this song’s about, it’s heavily inspired by Emmanuel Velikovsky’s book “Worlds in Collision”, which deals with the primordial “Saturn Sun Theory”, which tries to scientifically explain the Sumerian creation story of the “Purple Dawn” or the Ancient Greek version of the “Golden Age of Saturn”. The name of the band, the album title, and cover art are all loaded with Saturn Symbolism. Btw “Ozium” isn’t just an air-freshener or whatever: It’s a reference to one of the oldest names for Saturn, being “Uz”, from which we get the name “Osiris” (the Egyptian God associated with said planet), and the word “Ox”, as Saturn was once called the “Bull God” or the “Bull / Ox of Heaven”. “Oz, the Great and Terrible”, right? If only more folks knew about this kinda stuff lol
I will try to get videos made for those...and I'll probably doing videos for songs off of 4 Way Diablo when it is finally released. I was fortunate to hear a promo copy and it kicks ass.
I hear the new album kicks ass...Rumor has it that it has a Rolling Stones cover on it too. I don't know if it will be psychedelic like SOG, Dopes or Superjudge but it is said it is the best the band has done since Powertrip...yep, I'm REALLY looking forward to it. ;-)
Anybody else brought to this song through Electric Wizard? Jus Oborn was on a podcast 2 years ago, that listed 20 songs that he loved and respected. And Ozium was the next to last track. Killer...

MM are the only band I love never to do a bad album. This early stuff makes me smile and light a bong just as the new stuff makes me sing and mosh. @shawzymofo I definitely see the difference in the music from the early stuff to Powertrip and what followed. They really did away with lots of the echo-y, swirly sounds by Powertrip. But I like the newer stuff just as much as the old stuff. Their newer stuff has some great riffs. I do, however, like this production sound much better than with later albums.

On of the mellowest songs out there. Earlier Monster Magnet are amazing.
