What's always blown my mind about this video is that he's able to set these stones easily with a simple bench pin rather than an engraving/setting vise. That takes real skill.
Jorge you do fantastic work and I know what it take to make a ring of that caliper. When I was in my teen years I use to work for a woman who use to sell jewelry. I'm 62 now and my eyes are not what they use to be. Thank You for sharing and bringing the memory's.
I sit here quite coincidentally as I watch this amazing craftsman, wearing a 2 ct invisible set diamond ring that I have long taken for granted. Boy does this change my perception of how amazing this workmanship really is. Loved watching your skilled hands. Total admiration. Thank you for posting this.
This video inspired me so much 7 years ago, so many techniques picked up here alone. Still not capable of this, one day with the right people around. My boss literally told me that a ring didn't need to buffed before setting, or the inside of the ring and porosity was just a part of the business because he didn't have the time to fill it in. Ain't going to let him ruin my reputation, at the same time I'm killing myself working with someone with no standards, and have to leave my family to get a "real" Jewelers job. Literally have 13 custom builds in the box, in a town with only 2 "proper" bench Jewelers. Love this job, hate the people i work with and the owners who enable this bs.
This is a great video. We own the largest jewelry and watch repair shops in the US and are always looking for great talent to join our team of professional and talented jewelers. If you are interested or know of a jeweler that is interested in moving to CA or CT we will be glad to interview them. Thank you for sharing the great process of Invisible set!!! Congratulations on your talent.
Jorge - this was brilliant! Thank you very much for sharing your artistic talents - it's a generous thing to do. I live a thousand miles away, but as Chicago is my old home town, if I ever get back there I hope to come and meet you. With Best Regards......Ski
FYI....I recently discovered that chlorine in tap water over time can contaminate your rhodium solution creating foggy or milky plating. If this happens to you sometimes....having a distilled water dipping jar handy to use between rinsing under the tap will solve this problem and make your solution last longer. Thanks for sharing this video....I only offer this as a gesture in return...you obviously know what you are doing.
It is channel set. He used the hammer handpiece to lock in the baguettes on both sides before he installed the princess cuts. I liked how he used the wax to hold all the stones in through the backside when he hammered down the outer edge of the ring to secure the princess cuts. I wouldn't have the guts to use a wheel bur to trim back the hammered edge like he did before melting the wax since I'd be afraid of damaging the stones.
On a watch bezel , baguette stones setting , can the stones fall out easily ? What’s your thoughts? I’m worried about the stones falling out, especially on the 12 o’clock triangle stone. Would you even purchase a watch with these bezels?
This was very cool to watch; I've not seen invisible setting nor rhodium plating in action before. I'm still a bit unclear how the stones are all held in place with no metal between them. I couldn't quite tell what was being hammered on after the baguettes were set in place. For future videos I might recommend some audio instructions, if possible.
Invisible set is when the stone have a channel cut into the girdle and it clips side by side on a metal rail no hammering is needed, what is done here is just simply a channel set
wrong....the last step in invisible setting still require compressing the metal into the gems groove to set permanently. He does this to the center row of diamonds first because he has clearance to use his hand-piece without the outer two row of diamonds in place to interfere or risk breakage. Some do this by hand with a wooden stick or bamboo skewer after all the diamonds are in place....a master like this can accomplish the same thing and still control the tool with a hand-piece as he does because it's simply faster and with even more control. the outside perimeter only butts up against metal and is done the same as channel setting but that is the only similarity. Your not very observant.
did jorge moves his cilinder burr across the princess cut diamonds in order to straighten the edges? you are fearless!! i have never managed to keep a level surface when grinding with a abrasive disc like that. it sure looks like its working lightning fast! and all this without a microscope!!
Keep practicing, no one starts off a pro! I hope the video helps. I know we made this many years ago and we love to show more videos in the future with commentary!
Hi Jorge i'm jeweler from México, one suggestion, is Lost time polish one two three the ring, ir You polish one and for all You will save a Lot of time. Greetings from México
Helpfull great job ! Turn your volume down for this one folks Off to try my hand on some 2mm princess sapphires on a st silv bracelet If I screw it up it was free. practice makes perfect.there's no perfect practice.
Wowieee! That is BEEEEAUTIFUL! So when you are polishing and grinding you do not have to worry about hitting the diamonds because they are so hard that nothing can harm them?? I worked with you guys and you are AWESOME and do EXTRAORDINARY work!
The baguettes looks like are channel set but what is holding the side of the princess ones towards the baguettes if they are not grooved? Or they are on that side?
I have a question: if im casting a ring should I cut the holes for the stones in the wax then cast it, or should I cast the ring then cut the holes out for the stones? I would be using baguettes and but them up agenst each other similar to what you did. thank you :)
I have been a 3rd generation jeweler and X diamond setter for more than 40 years and this is not exactly crap but can only be done this way if you have done the exact same ring many times before and the stones are perfectly calibrated for the particular job. I did my business when this was hardly ever the case. No two jobs were ever the same and the stones were NEVER perfectly calibrated. I made my living from turning a pile of nonsense into a work of art that hardly anyone in Hatton Garden/ the world could do or would even attempt. Working on this kind of work would have been children's play by comparison requiring very little real skill or indeed thinking. Suffice to say I made so much money performing miracles for 12 years I set myself up for life and have been a manufacturer watching other people work ever since. Benchwork is mugs work. Make money fast while you are young and healthy, then get off of that bench as soon as possible before it kills you at an early age, as it did both my father and grandfather.
Fantástico.. Tu tecnica inigualable Pero no dices qué buril usas ni detalles técnicos para los que empiezan a engastar como yo. . Este es un video para profesionales.
not channel set! as there is no metal holding the stones in above the girdle only along the border. the hammering after the baguettes are placed in was to secure the metal into the grove as it would be impossible to do so after the princess cuts are placed in.
i think it's a foredom hammerpiece. i bought one alibaba even when i don't have the motor. hope its compatibel with my 2 others (pfingst=cheap and techdent)
Yes the quality of the video does not do the final piece justice. We'll upload more videos in the future. Find us on Chicago Invisible Setters youtube channel.
fool...you're talking out of your ass......the two center ribs that divide the three rows of diamonds are most definitely invisible set....the perimeter is hammered ( and beveled ) over as you saw him do. All the prep for the stone seat and under gallery frame and creating the burr in two center sections was all done for this one very specific setting style anywhere that two diamonds come together adjacent to one another which is all invisible set. You would never need to do this specific type of prep for anything BUT invisible setting. This is all clearly obvious to see for anyone who knows anything about diamond setting. This gentleman is a master class professional diamond setter ( I do not know him or have ever heard of him until I watched this video)... the speed in which he works, his tool selection ( note he uses no files and uses a hammer hand-piece instead of chasing chisels with a hammer and rotary discs) and his technique where he creates the perimeter chamfered border moving the metal over the gems at the same time in one step instead of two can only be acquired from years of experience and is plain to see. That and simply looking at the finished ring which is also obviously invisible set I'm sorry you are so ignorant.
Watching a true craftsman never gets old, I wish I could afford his work!🙏
Thank you Curtis! We love to try and work with our customers and within their budget. We can give out free estimates if you are interested!
Thanks for taking the time to show this. Really cool to watch👌
What's always blown my mind about this video is that he's able to set these stones easily with a simple bench pin rather than an engraving/setting vise. That takes real skill.
agreed.
Practice it , the amount off control you gain over the workpiece is well worth the efford. I seldomly work with vices or Grs benchmates while setting
Real jewelers don't need all that fancy stuff.
Fantastic workmanship. I hope more people can appreciate just how much skill is involved in this. Thanks for sharing.

That ring is gorgeous. Wow I am amazed at how shiny it got! What a beauty.

Wow, absolutely beautiful. I love how it looks after plating. Wow
Ahhh very clever way of stopping the stones rattling around when hammering. I might try that next time
Yes the shellac holds it nicely without damaging the diamond while setting!

Brilliant! Very skillfully done.

Super Nice.
What were you doing at the end when you dipped in 2 solutions?
Was that rhodium or platinum plating?
That step is called rhodium plating, and gives it a bright coating to the metal. It can be done to gold and platinum!
