  • Welcome back for another Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire videos. In this video, I explain why Lady Stoneheart was cut from Game of Thrones. This is a question fans have had for many seasons, and now, we finally have the answer. Dan and Dave told James Hibberd, from Entertainment Weekly, three reasons why they left this mysterious character out of their series. In my opinion, this was a big mistake. Not only did millions of fans want to see Lady Stoneheart in Game of Thrones, but so did the author of the story, George R.R. Martin. Let me know what you think about these new developments. Thanks for watching the video!

      I did not like season 8 myself but tbh i like many people didn’t read the books and probably wont ever, so maybe to us It doesnt matter if Stoneheart wasn’t included. Would including her really have improved the show for majority (i assume) that din’t read the books?

In the 2 year run up to season 8 whenever I thought that “surely 1season to wrap it up isn’t enough “ I would remind myself of how good the show was and that surely it was impossible to make a mess of it . Boy was I wrong , and in spades . All that’s left I suppose is to see DandD apologise .

Maybe Thoros managed to bring him back again one last time after he gave up his life to Catelyn? Thoros didn't seem to be losing anything bringing Beric back, so it's a possibility...if a slim one.

  • @BelgianBisous
    @BelgianBisous 3 ปีที่แล้ว +476

    Having beric dondarrion return a million times without it costing him anything cheapens death. Having jon return as fully human with his entire personality, speech, body and bodily functions back cheapens death. Cat was, besides drogo, the most haunting example of the cost of resurrection. And her resurrection came at the cost of beric's life force. That's some pretty uncheap bargain there.

    • @Harahvaiti
      @Harahvaiti 3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Exactly. Beric's multiple resurrections were OK with them, Jon returning as dumber version of Ned Stark was OK with them, but Lady Stoneheart was not. Morons.

    • @Elphba57
      @Elphba57 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      In the show Beric did remark on how every time he came back he was less himself. Jon seemed too confused to actually appreciate the full gravity of his resurrection. He also wasn’t a convert to that religion. Drogo’s tragedy was a huge statement both in the show/books as well as in the real world about what it means to be alive vs what it means to live. There was some of that in Jon’s story in the show as well. He never understood why he got another chance at life when so many good men and women around him didn’t. And the show gave him no real “point” on that either. He didn’t defeat the Night King, he had to kill his insane lover and go back beyond the wall as punishment; which he likely didn’t mind because he was beyond caring too much about anything at that point ... and he had affinity to the North, and his most faithful and true love: Ghost.
      Cat’s tragedy was so profound. One by one she lost everyone (she thought). In the GOT universe of magic, mystery and spirituality not having many boundaries her being resurrected wasn’t done with her permission. She had lost her mind when she saw her eldest son die after her husband was executed, being told her youngest boys were likely dead and her girls were missing. She didn’t have anything or anyone to live for. It was appropriate and poetic that she came back as a monster. In real life, people that suffer as she did often become very different too. Walking dead people.
      I really respect your comments about how literature and entertainment finds ways to cheapen the true costs of death. In the young and impressionable, it risks being confusing because there is the danger that they don’t really get the fact that dead is dead and take risks they shouldn’t take with themselves and others or think that somehow they will get to see the impact their suicide has on the people who they are trying to make a point to. That was a thoughtful and necessary interjection into the comments that you made. .

      There's a reason Jon comes back okay...the warging. Lady Stoneheart and Beric show what happens to regular people when they are brought back. Jon shows what happens if a warg/skinchanger can shift into their bond animal and then go back when their body is resurrected. Though if he had to stay in Ghost for very long, he'd come back a bit wilder and more wolf-like.

I felt it diminished his character to have him confront and kill Tywin more over Shae than what he'd done all those years ago to two innocent teenagers. That said, season 4 was still pretty good. Five through eight had major, glaring problems. Awesome TV but not great storytelling. D&D are not plotters. I think maybe burnout played into it as well. One thing that stuck to me about resurrection in GRRM's world (though I vaguely remember it) is that the degree of change a person manifests when resurrected depends on how long they stayed dead. Lady Catelyn was dead for 3 days hence the drastic change in character, plus also retaining some memory being the hatred towards the Lannisters and everyone involved in the red wedding.
    That would have given us some tension in the show about how Jon would change. I mean, we all knew he wouldn't stay dead anyway. The question should've been how much Jon would be left since he was dead for a whole day, I think. Beric Dondarrion didn't change since he was always revived the same moment he dies. 🤣
    Or may be a huge portion of Jon did die. Because by the end he look liked he only retained 1/3 of his IQ and just kept saying "Ur MaH KwEen" and "I dUn WaNt Et" 🤣

    Lady Stoneheart is really a different character. And she cant talk. But could you imagine if they filmed it(her resurrection) but in the next season just had this grey cloaked female in the back of some shots in the woods or just disappearing out of frame for 8 episodes. Then in episode 9 you get the storm of swords epilogue in full with a reveal of fairley with dead eyes, bloody robes, rotten blackened witch like fingers, and a grudge like gurgle on occasion. But she is just remorseless and oozing vengence. But because its the tv show she doesn’t hang just one frey but four, but does it one by one, so the others can watch them die. Then she just guts them with a dagger to make sure. Whispers in the next ones ear. Hangs them guts them, until the final one who has soiled himself, is absolutely petrified, screaming for help that will never come. Then we hear her choppy whisper before she hangs him. The episode then ends on a wide shot of the four hanged as the last one is gutted and lady stoneheart does a michael myers style head tilt. Cut to black.

    Let's be honest - they just didn't wanna invest in the Stoneheart-Jaime-Brienne-storyline.
    Weren't interested in those characters and therefore didn't want to write for them. That's why Jaime's storyline from S5 onward was so atrocious and he still continued being Cersei-whipped.

      Cutting out the Aegon sub-plot doomed Jaime as much as cutting Lady Stoneheart out did. Without Aegon and his backers for Dany to fight they had to keep Cersei alive way too long, and that had an impact on Jaime. The bringing back of Lady Stoneheart actually gives you more complexity towards Jon's resurrection. With his last words being "Ghost", it could take the path of Robb, but with Melisandre being there it could go down like Catelyn. This adds more depth and curiosity, in my opinion.
    Also, knowing that people change after resurrection, it would have been refreshing to see a different/vengeful side of Jon.

    I feel like Lady Stoneheart could have been really well adopted for film/TV. There was a brief time when season 7 came out where an extra passed by the background for like one frame and fans thought that could have been her or at least a nod to her. Could you imagine if something like that happened earlier in the show? Just isolated one shot appearances of her in the background leading up to her reveal? That would have been so awesome and creepy (think the hidden ghosts in Netflix’s Haunting of Hill House). I think if they used her sparingly it wouldn’t have undermined the red wedding.

    Catelyn is the revenant of the pain of war. She is probably going to be the thing that shows Westeros they need to stop being so war hungry. Thoros even says since she arrived he's seen how horrible these once good men could be. Imagine the commoners hearing that when this war got to its most dark and vile, when the ancient right of guest was broken, the once kind and loving wife of the Ned became a horrible undead that brought revenge and death upon the world for its crimes. I think her character is meant to show how war changes the world and people, how all it breeds is darkness.

    I only had 1 problem with final season. That was Jon's Sentence to the Nights Watch. 1. With the white walkers destroyed there is no need for a night's watch to exist/continue. 2. With the North being an independent kingdom, the 6 kingdoms have no power to force people to join the night's watch that is apart of the Independent North kingdom.... makes no sense. Now what would've made sense would to banish him from the 6 kingdoms, and Jon give his blessing for sansa to rule the North cause she is good at it, has loyal followers and fought for that independance at the dragon pit along with Jon never wanting any kind of power and always longing to return to the real North.

    • @Harahvaiti

      Night's Watch was not part of Kingdom in the North, nor it was part of Six Kingdoms. It is possible for both kingdoms to have an agreement on where to send their criminals. And Jon was in the end punished as criminal. It was not his own choice, D&D took even that from him.

      We had a polar bear in season 7 when tyrion has that fantastic idea to bring the deas to cersei. It killed one guy I think. But the bear was only half a second.
      And for ice spider. Dan and Dave said they did not include it because they somehow don't how a (mega) spider walks....

      @@lordofcastamere9376 maybe they should have asked Peter Jackson about giant spider in filmed fantasy

    In the first quote from them what they mean is 1. They didn’t put her in the show because of something George was going to do with her storyline later in the show that they didn’t want to happen later in the show; 2. They’re not going to SAY what that is (in the interview) that they didn’t want to include or they’ll spoil it. They didn’t mean that they didn’t put her in the show or it would spoil the storyline
    Personally, I hate what dan and Dave did with the last season of this show but when it comes to lady stone heart I can see the logic. The character seems a bit juvenile to me and I don’t think it would have translated well to TV at all

    Demonstrating that the Show Runners are allergic to foreshadowing and write just to surprise people

    Jon's resurrection wasn't that shocking and impactful because it was expected it would happen. I mean, Thoros was a red priest who already resurrected Beric several times, so Melisandre hanging around Castle Black just hinted to what would happen. Besides, he got resurrected only a few episodes after his death. Catelyn's return 1 or 2 seasons after her death would have been far more impactful.

    The Red Wedding was one of the most memorable scenes in GOT. Lady Stoneheart should have made an appearance. I would have loved it more than the ending.

    If it wasn't for the trash that was season 8, I would accept the reason they gave for not bringing back Catleyn Stark back as Lady Stonehart...

    I agree that D&D not only dropped the ball in the last 3 seasons, they threw it away. They were focused on what they thought would be their next big score. But, ultimately GRRM is responsible. Even if he couldn’t finish writing the books in time to support the show, he could have provided scripts. After all he had written TV scripts before that did not have his own literary references as a basis. Financial success sucked him down. He was having too much fun being a celebrity to return to being an author. Who knows, perhaps if he had committed to good scripts, he would have found his way out of the maze of ASoIaF.
