Please don’t tell us what we shouldn’t wear. Some people can make a dustbin bag look stylish and wonderful. Others with the most beautiful clothing still look terrible. We should wear what we want and feel good in. I had my work clothes that boosted my confidence. It was also like wearing body armour.
I have received compliments when wearing something I didn’t like that much. But to be told you shouldn’t wear it after a certain age what!
At 72 maybe l should dress in a shroud at least I’m ready.

Those big sales like the Nordstrom Anniversary one have mostly inferior merchandise made specifically for the sale. Instead of discounting quality items like silk, cashmere and leather, for example, there will be lots of “designer-like looks” in polyester, acrylic and polyurethane. I rarely look at those sales anymore, there isn’t much to my liking. A lot of my decluttered items came from such sales in the past, often because of a comfort problem with the inferior fabrics and materials.

This was fun. Long nails with designs and embellishments just scream "cheap" to me. It would work well, however, with the new "Mob Wife" look that's trending now. Not my vibe though. Deirdre you’ve put together a very useful list. I’ve learned the hard way lol!! The only sale i attack now is M&S and get those super soft crew necks, as many colours as I can. They are fab, so easy to wear. But they don’t last for years. They pill and only last a season of washing before they look pretty poorly. But at £17.50 I’m willing to replace regularly.
Your description of a stylish woman is an exact depiction of my mother. Now 97, demented and bedridden, she still compliments my clothes during her lucid moments. We had soooo much fun over the years, clothes shopping in London. I miss those days.

I’m picky about what I buy, it must be well made, it must be good quality fibres, and it must be able to last a long time because of simpler lines or details. 95% of my closet is secondhand, anything retail must be special. We can sometimes find those better quality pieces at fast fashion retailers, I found a pair of metallic denim at Zara in January, they were on my wish list and will be worn for a very long time.
I shop with a wish/want/need list to keep myself focused.
No sale or bargain piece that you never wear or wear once is worth purchasing; it’s a waste of funds, your precious closet space, and not sustainable. Better to wait find the right piece that you love, fits your style aesthetic, and can be worn over and over.

I think acrylic nails are disgusting, and very low-class, the wearers can’t see how filthy the undersides always are. Some of them look like, and can probably function as, weapons! Same here. I have also bought expensive lipsticks, Dior, Mac, Chanel, Clinique, Rubinstein, Arden, Lancome, you name it....... for me it's not worth the money. Same with very expensive cosmetic, and I tried nearly all in the course of my life. I personally love Revlon and L'oreal lipsticks, great colours, good texture and great price.
Expensive cosmetic is so expensive because of the marketing. Test reports are showing often bad ingredients and in particular most of the face creams and serums are totally over-perfumed.
But everyone has to make it's own choice.....so you have to ask yourself, whether it's really worth your hard earned money.

I have sometimes bought in a pale colour and then had it dyed black or navy. I also have an elegant black silk skirt and have the tailor make different tops which totally rings the changes. And when it has done its service, I always try and get shortened for a cocktail dress. When the time has come to pass it on, I donate to a particular charity who have a number of ladies who enjoy cruising and need evening dresses.

Bravo, one of your best videos. Everything just so right on point. I fully agree on the garish neon colours no chic ladyshould ever purchase. The only piece of "one occasion" clothing one should have, and pray won't have to be used too often, is an outfit for funerals. As for me, since a black coat doesn't suit me at all, the only one I've been compelled to get was for those occasions. Same for a two-piece black suit for summer funerals. As re. bag dupes, why not turn to less expensive but so talented designers, such as Liu Jo, Blumarine, Torrente, Georges Rech, and above all Ted Baker. His flower-printed bags and designs in general are so stylish that I've had people stop me in the street and asking about them. Same goes for Olivia Burton's delightfully feminine watches.

Just thought I'd mention that it's perfectly acceptable to wear navy blue to a funeral also. Even my clothes appropriate for a funeral (cold weather and warm weather) can be worn at other times. I have no "one occasion" clothing in my wardrobe.

I wanted to go there and... Well, you are the confirmation I needed. I've been loving your content. Greetings from Belgium

I am on a fixed income and only wear lipstick when I go out but I have a light but totally Mediterranean complexion so to get something close to my natural color without going too dark just doesn't exist in the cheaper brands. I am going to have to invest in one of the better brands that caters to my skin color. I'm the exact opposite of Dierdre so the color that looks so great on her would be horrible on me.

I totally agree on these points you’ve made. I don’t like the long gaudy acrylic nails and I love the neutral French nails you were wearing. I’m an artist so I use my hands a lot so I like practical nails. I make hand made jewelry, so I believe in balance with that also. I believe more expensive lipstick is better it’s less likely to fade and for us older ladies it’s less like to bleed as well. Very much enjoyed listening to this episode. ❤

I like your ideas. Long acrylic nails and logo filled clothing and accessories have become almost a cultural thing.
Cotton is the most pleasant thing to wear in Houston, Texas when it gets really hot. So many people wear black clothing here, it’s incredible. Like they don’t understand hot black makes you hotter. Also the over wearing of hoodies when it’s not even cold.

I totally agree with you, except for the nails. I do agree with the long and talen-like nails. I love my nails, as my original nails are very thin and brittle. I have a funny, sort of, lipstick story. I don't know if they do this in the UK or Continental Europe but in the US, they will put makeup on a corpse for the viewing. My Mom had my olive complexion but darker. People sometimes thought she was a light skinned Indian (Eastern). So when she died, they took her to prepare her and I walked in and I could see her lips glowing from across the room! They had used a bright coral, I think irridescent lipstick. I was furious. This was a woman of mature years, dressed elegantly. I told them to take it off. They didn't want to but I said "if you don't, I will close the coffin and there will be no wake," meaning I wasn't going to pay for a circus. They fixed it.

This video was dynamite! I especially loved the topic of high end lip color. My clothing is neutral, so I love to play with color on my lips. My favorite brand is YSL. It’s so creamy and has gorgeous colors. I also use a liner and a gloss. Love a pretty lip color packaged elegantly. 🎉❤

Loved seeing some of your environment, the trees are so beautiful! Everything you have said here is spot on. I love the artistic side of nail art, to look at for creative but no one should wear them. Long nails have been out for a long time, some just don't want to let go. England has amazing, well tailored clothes. Try shopping in the US! Even designer clothing is polyester. I went to Brahmin hand bags because not a lot of people know about them and they are classic or high color and there is something for everyone.

So glad I found your channel. I love it! As for the lipstick, an expensive lipstick is a big lift to one's morale for not much outlay. Having said that, some of the heavy matte Revlon lipsticks in traditional colours, eg Revlon Red, Fire and Ice and Cherries in the Snow, are spot on, though inexpensive.

Great video! I agree that long nails, whether real or acrylic, and embellished nails, are so unattractive, no matter one’s age. I disagree a bit regarding color. I feel that pale colored nails wash me out. These days, I prefer a more saturated color on my very short nails, my favorite being a deep blue. It is very denim friendly and I always get compliments on it. The one thing I would never spend money on, in addition to those you mentioned, is “whimsical “ clothing or jewelry. Items like heavily embellished sweaters, those with cutesy designs, etc. I particularly dislike holiday themed earrings (Christmas trees, snowflakes, etc.). I just don’t think it’s a stylish look. Of course, as you say, people should wear what they want. It’s just fashion after all.

I would add no patterns, stripes. I like a softer look, without distractions. Prefer to accessorize with nice jewelry.
