The US media is far more anti China than media from any other country ... The media in most countries is pretty mild compared to Fox News, for example ... Fox is literally addicted to China bashing.

Thank you for your story...follow your heart...when I was younger than you I switched universities because the professor taught a style of Spanish that is only used in a part of Spain. (A side note.. I lived in Mrs Tabery home in Italy when I was in 1st grade I had to attend the 4th grade in Italy as that was when English was used within the teaching environment, a win win for all.) My family traveled the US and Europe in a VW bus back in the 60s . I returned to Mexico ready to stay there until I had mastered the language! Well I passed the class even when the professor broke from Spanish to English to tell me what a preperational phrase was and I responded in Spanish...he was so upset that he stormed out of his class of 4....I've made it to 60+ and I don't teach English unless you just want to hear my story and my English is excellent! After our Spanish school time was over another American and I stayed on in Mexico to travel and learn more about the culture. (One of my goals was to be fluent in Spanish and it was an evening in Oaxoca that 3 guys were following us and talking in Spanish and were making plans for the American girls (us). Two things happened that evening, the shocked facial expressions and I knew I was fluent! Learn the conversational Mandrian, the culture and some culinary favorites, they will be with you the rest of your life! There are millions of good people around the world. Look forward to seeing a video like this one, my motto make new friends but keep the old one is silver and the others gold. For past 15 years I have taken a vacation of at least a week with some girlfriends (6-15) of them. About a decade ago I was designated the 'find what the locals do when they have time person's. I love this job as I get to meet new people and to date have been fun and time well spent! A hotel on the island was having an open house to celebrate 50 years of service to the community. I was invited to attend, with my friends, by an islander who had been walking her Golden Reteiver the night before. We helped clean up and then about 20 islanders and us Midwesterners went for a walk on the beach. It is so easy to fall back to what is known but the world is a fascinating place! China is on my bucket list so please share your adventures!

Great perspective and coming from the UK myself, I feel Brits who live in China are much more straight forward and non pretentious about what their experiences are there. What amazes me is people who has this irrational hatred for a country and it's people (whether it's China or some other country) which they have no affiliation to. Instead of worrying about their own local community issues, they are far more concerned about what another culture eats, drink, do or even what their local traditions are. Perhaps these people turn a blind eye to their own country's problems and focus on another to make themselves appear as though they are more superior. For whatever reason I feel sorry for these people because you must have a very boring and sad life to be concerned about other people's way of life which you have absolutely no association with.

I was asked all the time by people around me about Chinese politics in a tone that they feel sorry for me growing up in a awful country and getting brainwashed. And I feel they won’t really believe me even if I tried hard to explain every time. I always try to look at the light side of things and issue like this isn’t that deep for me. I grew up happily and learned a lot about the world outside (even though internet was restricted lol) in politics class all the teachers I had taught me not only the Chinese politics but also different systems in other countries. I remembered learning the mistakes my country made in history which is very educating. To me the form of politics isn’t as important as the life of people. With a rapid growing economy in China today, I’m confident that China will find its way to one of the best nations to live, with love, open mind and kindness to the others.

Good job!!!! Hi from London..... Glad to see you settled well in Shenzhen...... It’s beautiful city. Been here in London nearly 20 years now, still feel myself a half foreigner somehow......Language is a big deal, plus culture shock as well......another thing is the hostile attitudes of some main stream medias towards China, Chinese people and Chinese culture are not helpful. If they are less judgemental and hypocritical then they could understand China and Chinese people much better......which also sometimes make me hold back......I was called Covid-19 3 times in street when back from shopping.....I was feeling really hurt. However, london is a metropolitan city with quite a open-minded culture. I have faith in ordinary people here and the most people are kind and reasonable. So I put the personal negative experiences aside and signed up for the voluntary work during this unprecedented time. Currently helping the 3 elderly people with their weekly grocery shoppings......as they have no one to rely on......see their smiles make me feel rewarded......living abroad has opened up my mind and also taught me a lot, be humble, be respectful and be positive.....have faith in people, things will change......hope you keep head up whatever you may experience in future.....China is very civilised country and Chinese people are warm hearted......

Thanks for your sharing, and good to know your life changing experience in Shenzhen. You reminded me it also changed my life 15 years ago. I don't know how, but I fully understand how you feel, and experienced in this place. I got married and had baby in Shenzhen, lived there for 6 years and back to HK. I would say living in Shenzhen is my best experience in my life.
I still want to live in Shenzhen someday. I really love the place, food, people there. People there are more sincere and helpful than in HKers today in general. Also, people in China or Shenzhen are much more energetic, they are full of hope, that inspire me. Some of them are even in quite bad economic situation, but they are still smiling and willing to help other people. I think this give you hope and energy too. Shenzhen is like young people, it's changing everyday. And people there are willing to work hard to earn a better life. Hope you and your dad enjoy life in China and keep your channel posted.

Very true. Ethnocentrism is extremely prevalent in English speaking countries. As someone who fluently speaks three languages, its true that you can explore a different perspective when you learn a language because languages reflect how those who speak that particular language think. It's a pity for those people who become so close minded because of this arrogance.

"Learning the world with your eyes instead of your ears". I can't agree with this words more. When I was in China, I learn western world from media. But I didn't completely believe it. So I went on travel. It really feels like a frog jumping out of the well and seeing how big the real sky is, not just from the bottom of the well.

I think you expressed yourself very clear and fair. you have already begun to understand where/why the ignorant bias comes from. As a Chinese , we have maybe 10% population could speak English , and some of them speak fluent English.many of us have the experience being abroad, so since long time ago, we had known the bias and the turth behind. Thank you for getting that point, and bty, welcome here.

This is certainly one of your BRILLIANT videos Ollie! Thanks for sharing your very interesting and insightful story! You raised so many excellent points in this video and there was one in particular which totally resonated with me. And that is the super importance of finding out the truth for yourself and to never just take other people's words for things! It's one of my most important principles in life! My number one motto in life is: COMPETENCE, not confidence!! And this other one is not far behind!!
Just on a side note, are you a believer in fate Ollie? Do you believe that it was possibly your destiny to be where you are today? Nonetheless, well done on taking this leap of faith as it is certainly not easy! And also well done on learning and being quite proficient in a new and difficult language!

After watching this video, personally I don't think it's fate, it's the uploader's own decision himself to drop everything and fly off to China and experience our country. Then afterwards, there was that period of homesickness he felt, but he didn't give in to it and he chosen to remain in China instead of boarding the flight home to UK.
I personally believe its his own willpower and decision that created his circumstances today, not the whims of fate. It's just my opinion that's all.

Hi Ollie I totally agree with you. I’m also from Shenzhen and currently studying in Stockholm. Like you said, merely traveling wouldn’t give you the whole picture and in-depth experience of what’s really going on in the opposite side of the earth. You have to live, work or study in there to make any informed decision and come up with your own non-superficial understanding of another country and culture.
Keep it up Ollie. God bless you and your family.

Marco Polo (1254-1324) lived in China between 1271-1295. Try to picture what a quantum leap it was for young Marco to go east with his uncle. Check out books on Marco Polo. China is re-emerging on the world stage after a deep slumber. As Yale professor Stephen Roach wrote recently, "When China sneezes", the world needs to pay attention. By all means learn to speak Putonghua (Mandarin), to read & write Chinese too. Make friends. To live in a first-tier Chinese city in 2020 is living on the pinnacle of modernity. What a contrast to every other cities on earth at this time! You're a lucky guy.

I agree your view point very much, if want to know the true just go there, live there, learn the history, culture. Of course there are some foreigner specially from the west live in China even married with Chinese, but never understand China, because they were always put themselves in the opposition side of Chinese. I am Chinese live in US, I know people in both country all are great people, but the politician and media make people more difficult to understand each other, they make the world more divided!

Every time I tried to tell sth different from the media to my family, they always think I have a washed - mind, but I am just telling what happened on me, I don’t even say an opinion. No, the reason why English is very important is not because it is international but because of the western supremacy and eurocentrism. It is thanks to the colonialists ancestor who killed, enslaved thousands of people. Take a look at the history and you will understand. Ancestors of Africans, Native Americans, Indians, Chinese suffered from your country Great Britan or Spain, France, Germany, Netherland, Belgium and so on. I appreciate your positive efforts and videos and that is why I have subscribed your channel. Just to let you know that is not coming only from selfishness but arrogance and superiority complex.

British Colonialism is the reason the English language came to dominate the rest of the globe and the size of the British Empire is testament of how such a small nations language can gain influence.
