Damn.. really nuanced, self aware stuff and very articulately communicated. Feeling that subtle feeling of 'embarrassment' or something missing as you said about your station or title is not a reflection on the title itself, it's about one's own capacity and craving for more and, ultimately, self-actualization. It's not vain or selfish to feel that appetite to achieve more respect through hard work and dedication and yearning for more challenge, it's your soul's way of saying you're meant for more.
Wow Jay man that’s incredibly relatable. I have been an RN since January of last year and I feel the EXACT same way. I’ve been catching myself looking up routes to MD/DO vs. NP/CRNA lately. Even though NP makes the most “sense” I catch myself thinking the exact same things you mentioned here. Can’t wait to hear what you end up doing man.
@@JayFriedrichs Physician or PA. They need you in that field most definitely man. You would be the highest quality of that craft. A RN first, then a PA or physician 2nd. You Deserve it & are more than capable of doing it! Like your videos a lot! A therapeutic experience!
I literally became a nurse so I can be an NP. I'm too old to go to medical school and it doesn't gel well with my current lifestyle and responsibilities. I need to figure out the puzzle.
I'm the same. I got accepted into med school, and I even cried tears of joy, but thinking about it logically it doesn't make sense at my age, and I'd also have to quit my job and spend maybe a decade just studying really dense topics. And all for what? So I can go into an ego trip by saying that I'm a doctor? It doesn't make sense. I'd rather be the best nurse ever and be as proud as can be about my job.
i’m currently 18 and my main things are Lifting, nutrition, health, and helping people. i’m currently thinking about becoming a NN nutrition nurse and this video helped out
Many nursing schools (like mine) require you to be a CNA prior to admission. While it seems like a pain, it can be a good eye-opener for someone who has unrealistic expectations of what working in a hospital will be. If I were you, I'd make the logistically smart (albeit not as impressive on paper) decision, and go to NP school. Decent money, you can diagnose, prescribe, etc... If you work somewhere like the ED as an NP, you can do all of the things you described that you want.
@@JayFriedrichsMaybe you just feel underappreciated and feel that a MD title will bring that "respect" you wish you had. However, a MD title will not fulfill your expectations. Maybe on paper you'll be a doctor, but will find out that the real heroes will always be the nurses because they're the ones who really get to know the patient and yes you'll place the orders, but you'll have to also follow the "system orders". Now, if you're willing to sacrifice you're life to study medicine go for it. Make it more interesting and affordable go to study Medicine to Mexico and learn Spanish in the process. Good luck!
wow! I’m an INFJ. 😊 6:28 Me being the flipped side if the coin but an introvert, (referring to the ENFJ reference.) I think that the respect part is something I really resonate with. P.A. route is great if you’re looking for Physician-like work, but good hours and it only takes two years of schooling. I was pre-med in college, but I just didn’t want the work life balance that most Doctors have.
I like PA for them being taught under medical model and they seem very well prepared. I work with a ton of PAs, NPs, and Doctors, and I’ve discussed these routes with them a lot. Im going to talk about why PA doesn’t make sense for me more in an upcoming video, but I’ll give a few reasons why now: first, NP I can still work during school, I have easy admission being a registered nurse, and then I have potential to teach (which I love teaching). And If I go NP route I will be doing DNP not a masters (that’s a whole other tangent hahah). But yes I totally get the work life balance thing!
Oh to be 18 again! I’m 23 now, about to start a 2nd degree BSN program. My hope is to eventually pursue the NP/PA route, but what you just said really did enlighten me about the flexibility of being an NP. I guess I’ll learn more about what path I should pursue once I have experience in the field.
Great video, can always appreciate honesty. I'm planning on going to school for nursing. And was thinking that after a few years of that try to become a nurse practitioner or doctor. What scares me about pre med is not finishing med school after. Doesn't seem like you can do much with a pre med degree. I've got some time to decide but I'm only getting older. I'm gonna take that personality test now though.
You can always choose nursing BSN for undergrad, but make sure you take pre med courses. TBH nursing and doctor are very different roles tho! So keep doing your research as to what best suits you my friend.
I work at a hospital in an administrative position, and I've seen plenty of similar cases of nurses just quitting their job and going into med school, and for some reason they're all male and they voice similar sentiments about feeling like they're trapped and they want to do more. I think there's a real issue here and there should be more efforts into making nursing more attractive for the male mindset seeking more knowledge and constant improvement. Don't let yourself be hindered by the stereotypes, being a nurse is not "less than". You shouldn't feel ashamed or think that you've wasted years of your life. If you went now to med school, would you be doing it for yourself, or for the perception that others might have about you?
