My Beloved Dad was a Massachusetts NED Rep and these guys actually had dinner at my family home and then they sang a set in my living room. It was an unreal experience that I will never forget.

The way the pitch creeped on “ours” made it way more emotional too

Talk about "leaving it all on the stage"! What a performance. Those guys were all in (and a bunch of other appropriate cliches could be inserted here). What I wouldn't give to be able to walk off a contest stage or show performance and know that I gave everything I had in the moment like those four men did. Aside from how great their individual voices are and how great their ensemble sound is, those guys were totally committed to the message and emotion of that song and their performance raised goose bumps on my arms. There are those rare occasions when an ensemble brings together vocal technique with heart and you get magic. That was magic!

Dat Joe and Don combo tho. (All four yes, but this song is so lead/bass driven and they both put on a clinic here)

i think we should really appreciate rogers part in this! if he was closer to the mic and louder, his overtones are so nice with tony and joe!

So good! But, I look at all the tension in their necks, bodies, faces and can't help think of the sound that might have been unlocked with some of the modern pedagogy we're teaching today.

I wonder if the presentation, music or singing judges docked them for the sigh at the end? Not in my music. I do believe I would have. Still, a great performance.

The penalties from this performance (in the Arrangement category) cost them the gold medal. If they had gotten zero Arrangement deductions, they would have tied The Ritz and won based on their higher Sound score.

    • @Wahl95

@@b_matthew1850 This song doesn’t have enough “barbershop chords” and implied circle of fifths (I think). David Wright gives a great explanation of the Arrangement category in his History of Barbershop video series.

I'm not a judge and never was. But I heard each of these quartets (Keepsake and the Ritz) in the early 90s. Keepsake was better over all. But the Ritz had polished their best couple of numbers to where it was the best barbershop I ever heard, before or since . I don't blame the judges for picking them.

@@b_matthew1850 Good question! I don't know what the rules of barbershop arrangements are, but I love this arrangement. So much so that I feel like any rules that would change anything about this arrangement ought to be scrapped. I have a feeling that some of the rules about "barbershop chords" are probably outdated. "Barbershop" sound has gotten a lot more sophisticated and musically rich over the years, and for me that's all to the good. In fact,
"classic" old-fashioned cornball barbershop numbers can easily sound too cheesy and corny. This particular arrangement is especially beautiful, I think, and something to be prized rather than penalized!
