  • When to harvest, how to prepare and store onions is key to having your own supply of onions for several months of the year. This is how iv done it for a number of years and it works for me. Simple and uncomplicated, you may want to try this. Check out this attachment, its a several month update on previously stored onions: studio.youtube...

Wow, beautiful red onions. Thanks for sharing your onion growing process with us. I love the way you use what you have. Many people here in the states have similar fences. Good way to put them to work for more than asthetics and privacy.

Those are beautiful. Did the neighbor do a double take with all the onion tops 'growing' on the fence? That would have made my day.

I gave up on redskins this year after 2 years of failures. Planted some 200 brown onion sets this year and have lifted about 180 with a few still swelling. Quite a few small ones, but they cook just fine. I had that thunder and heavy rain here too. Managed to move the drying racks indoors just in time. Garlic did great , planted organic spanish hard neck that I bought from tesco.
I will save some heads for next season. The chinese stuff is a non starter. Lots of tomato flowers, but no signs of fruit. But cukes are starting to swell. Potatoes (shop bought, not "seed" potatoes) did well. Had some in ground, some in plastic bags and some in sections of 2 ft dia culvert pipe. All were good and clean with zero lost to predators, thats a first.
Planted some earlies in buckets for a winter harvest, they will be in the low tunnel after other stuff is harvested. Sadly the weather is so changable tis year everything is confused.

I have the best success with yellow onions, it seems to be more of a struggle with red and white. No idea why, my growing methods are the same.

I store unions from November/December till May /une for Australian Hunter Brown whites don’t store long but reds do and pull them out later and stores a little later too including the pink onions.

Just pulled my last bed of onions as most are drying standing up. It's supposed to be
sunny and warm, not hot, for the next 3-4 days. Just pull them and lay them out in the
bed they grew in and should be it. And Bobs your Uncle.

I usually rake in some onion fertiliser Andrew, when the bed's empty, before I plant the onions then its just water after that. Jim.

No mention of variety? Red brunswick store long time ?

These were cheap as chips bog standard (not heat treated) onion sets that were simply described as Red Onions. There was no variety named on the bag. I suspect they were Red Barron but that's just a guess. I remember reading comments on previous videos where some varieties were described as 'good store'rs' on some as 'not so good store'rs' but no timescale on good or not so good. If I can manage 6 months in store, that's good enough for me. The redskins in this video link studio.th-cam.com/users/videoltrz8DLeBRc/edit are Red Barron and Ailsa Craig,
