    If you can take a good photo in the street, you can take a good photo anywhere.
    Yet, the right information is hard to find online.
    The advice was intangible and too specific. It was strongly opinionated. By the time I was taking photos, I’d forgotten it all.
    There was nothing in the market that could scratch my itch.
    It took years of dedication to photography to learn the fundamental concepts that create great images.
    These concepts I sharpened on the street were the same ones I use for brands all across the globe.
    As a challenge to myself, I packaged these ideas into the photography guide I wish I had earlier in my journey:
    Street Tools.
    I created a mentor in my pocket.
    175+ pages breaking down the most impactful photographic concepts into visual tool kits, so you can learn effectively and save years of trial and error.

    I’m an old school photographer and started off shooting film back in college many, many years ago, so how a camera handles and operates means a lot to me. That’s why I switched from Nikon to Fuji a few years ago and I don’t retreat my decision to switch. I’m having a blast shooting my Fuji’s

    I received my vi a couple of days ago, been a Fuji user for a few years when the xt2 came out and have used it ever since. I have always wanted to try the x100 series and was convinced about 2 years ago after talking to a wedding photographer who was using a x100v for candid shots etc, He said don’t hesitate just get one, so from then I kept looking but the prices were ridiculous. I ordered the vi when it was announced and have only had time to play around the house so far but will be out with it next week. It feels as good as I thought it would and now means that I will have a camera with me all the time. It won’t be sold on for profit, it will be used for family events, holidays, days out, whenever I leave the house.
    That’s is what any camera Is for.
    If you want one be patient, when it arrives, enjoy it for what it is.

      Your story sounds 90% like mine. X-T2 lover for years but for 2 years been itching to get my hands on an X100V. Now got myself the VI and am super happy with it. I want to use it for everyday photography and to get better in general. With my X-T2 I noticed I relied too much on the lenses. I am excited to learn and get better.

    You nailed it with "pickupability" (patent pending, TM 🙂) My multi-tool is my XT5 and I love, love, love it. But even though it's not big, it's also not small, no matter how small a lens I put on it. And a cellphone just doesn't do it for me, even though it's always with me. Hauling it out of my purse, turning it on, getting the camera app going - whew! The moment has passed. No fun at all. The X100IV isn't in my budget right now, but I can definitely see the allure of a tool that does one thing and does it really, really well. And is a delight to use! If you're taking photos just for pleasure, and not as a business, then the whole experience should be fun, whatever "fun" means to you individually.

      TBH the size/weight differences between the X-T5 and the X100VI isn't huge: "Fujifilm X100VI:128 x 75 x 55 mm (5.04 x 2.95 x 2.17″) and weighs 521 g (1.15 lb / 18.38 oz) (including batteries), Fujifilm X-T5:130 x 91 x 64 mm (5.12 x 3.58 x 2.52″) and weighs 557 g (1.23 lb / 19.65 oz) (including batteries). Not to mention that if you add the additional extra to get the X100VI weather sealed then there size/weight will be even closer (say you are using a small lens on the X-T5 such as a 23mmf2 or a pancake 27mmf2.8 😉).
      The X100VI is a great "pickable" or compact camera but not such pocketable that is night and day with a X-T5 wearing a small lens.

    • @JamesParsons1
      @JamesParsons1  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Whilst its not night and day, I'd say its still significant difference. The x100 with everything built in is smaller in every dimension and lighter than the XT5 without a lens. Think of it like a stock car vs one with race trim, they are fundamentally the same, yet have subtle differences that affect how they are used

      I'm going to get pick-up-ability into the Oxford dictionary ahaha. I've heard many great things about the XT5, and with the same Fuji DNA i'm sure it's a wonder to use. A focus on fun and usability is so much more important than mega pixels and iso performance ahaha

      @@JamesParsons1 I can't disagree 😀 and I totally understand your point. I was trying to say that if you already have an X-T5 (like the person from the original comment) then I am not too sure if it is worth getting an X100VI just for the extra portability/pickabiity. Just my thought as an X-T5 user, and each individual might have different views on this.

      @@JamesParsons1 there is night and day between a Ricoh GR3 and a Fuji X100 camera in terms of portability. I own a Panasonic which with a 30 mm lens is 19 ounces, one more ounce than the Fuji X100VI and it's still a camera strap camera, when you say pocketable, you are talking big coat pockets :-)

    One of my favorites quotes is "The best camera is the one you have with you".
    After several years trying different focal lengths on my Fuji X-T2 I can 100% say that the focal length is NOT the most important, nor is the brand of the camera. The most important is whether you actually use the camera you have. Sure you can have a favorite focal length and a favorite style/look but like James mentioned, if you cannot be bothered to carry your gear with you all the time, it doesn't matter whether it's 500 Euro or 6000 Euro worth of gear.
    Now for anyone who wants to start learning photography I would tell them to not start with buying expensive gear but to start and use their phone for a few months or a year and just shoot everything and anything they find interesting and once they have some idea what they like, they can just buy a more pro camera using that knowledge as a basis. Most of the prime lenses I got while starting out I would NEVER buy now cause I barely use them.

    Something else to consider is when Fuji (or whatever brand you like) sells a lot of cameras it ends up being good for everyone. It gives them more money and incentive to keep making the products we love and not only that but make them better. I love seeing "non photographers" buying the x100 series cameras because its sending a signal to not only Fuji but all camera manufacturers that "hey, this is what the consumers want, give us more". It might take a few years to catch up to the demand but I'd estimate in 5 years from now we will have a lot more options in the fixed camera ecosystem at lower prices and more features.

      GREAT thought here dude! I completely agree. It feels like the power-users have a stranglehold on many of the big camera brands forcing them to higher res, faster AF etc, which is very helpful to pros, but not anyone else. Great to see fuji sticking to its own beliefs and creating great products for us to enjoy

    A dyed in the wool Canon shooter with lots of gear and processed my first film 62 years ago! Travelled to many places around the world with my passion for photography. Acquired the Fuji X100Vi upon release and very early days for me to comment on its performance et al. There is a but though! I love shooting with my iPhone 15 Pro and did a quick comparison. Processed RAW images of Fuji vs out of the phone images are very similar when viewed on a monitor. Enlarging small sections of the image and pixel peeping shows the benefits of shooting with the Fuji over the iPhone. iPhone images don't stand up to large enlargements well.
    But here's the thing - iPhone screen display and ease of shooting makes this an attractive package for run 'n gun photography - and the iPhone sits well in the pocket. Unlikely to make big prints from Fuji, so if the on monitor displays are the only way that 'fun' images are displayed then why not use the iPhone? Future algorithm developments for the iPhone can only further the advantage of iPhone use for fun photography!
    I trialled the LeicaQ2 recently. Loved the superb image quality at a handy 28mm; the Fuji uses an old lens which is 35mm and is out of step with both the Leica and the iPhone in this regard.
    So my Project will continue and I will evaluate my experiences with Fuji in the fullness of time. I don't wish to sound negative about the Fuji camera - just an honest opinion about my experiences and thoughts about the camera.

      I honestly think that a flagship cell phone from Apple, Samsung or Google beats the quality you'll get out of a X100VI or X100V. To go beyond, and capture more detail and light in a scene, you can do that by stepping up to different lens' and cameras, but I'm not convinced of the X100 lineup after reviewing hundreds of shots on Flickr.

    I owned 2 Fuji x100: the s and the v. I started taking pictures in the 80’s so I love a good manual camera, one with knobs and an aperture ring that I can see, when I first saw the x100s it was a return to simplicity iso-aperture-speed, that is all and the Fuji scratch that itch. Loved the feel of it, loved that didn’t need to think what other lenses, I was stuck with this, make do! It’s not the camera’s fault that the price went high, it’s the company’s. when Fujifilm didn’t make enough cameras it made that market. Ironically enough in my case the x100v was not enough and I went even more manual by buying into the Leica M (talk about inflation!!!). And the sale of that Fuji x100v helped me get in that system for an even more manual experience. For the record I didn’t make a fortune with it but I didn’t lose money either. Which was nice and quite unusual. All fujifilm needs to do is make more X100VI and the market will calm down. Will they? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      @@JamesParsons1 I’ve had an m4p back in the 90’s (which I sold 10 years to early in 2008), so I wasn’t unfamiliar with the Leica M. And I think I thought I could use the X100s and v as a poor man’s digital Leica. But really it never completely fit the bill. My M10 feels much more like a real camera and not a «toy». I was so surprised by the weight of it amongst other things. The Fuji is so light! At first I thought it was the fact that it’s a digital Leica, then after trying out an old m4 I realized, no, that’s how they’ve always made them, hefty. As for the overall feel of it, at the beginning it felt like i was relearning photography. Still am after 8 months.

    I even went out and shot some street.
    Technically, I find the raws quite soft but maybe a Lightroom Issue - Did you use LR or capture one for your x100v edits?
    Im mainly using the jpgs as I edit enough photos for work that I just wanted to shoot / share without hassle of too much editing, but was quite let down with resolution. My x100 vi isn't going anywhere however as its just a fun portable tool I love to use.

      No. Shooting at a variety of apertures. It’s not camera shake etc. the jpegs are much better. I have a friend who is very knowledgeable on the subject and he said it’s the way LR renders Fuji raw files and it’s a known issue. He said it’s a “de-bayering” issue. A lot better in C1 apparently.
      I’d say cameras like a7iii raws much sharper.
      The jpegs are decent though.
      I thought I was imagining LR being slow with Fuji files but seems not.

    • @JamesParsons1
      @JamesParsons1  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fuji files are definitely slower on lightroom. But I'm not sure about the 'de-bayering' as fuji uses x-trans sensors rather than Bayer, that having been said, it might just be the term used to describe a process. Would be interested to know what this process is and why it creates 'soft' images?

    Great video. Six months ago I decided to switch from Olympus, I'd just bought new to reboot a 30 year gap in my old film hobby, to Fujifilm because I saw an X100V. I couldn't find one at a 'get real' price so went with a used X-E4 and 18mm lens instead. Since then I've purchased an XF10, also 18mm, as my everyday in the pocket camera. Then an old X-M1 and a couple of used lenses; 27mm and 35mm just because of the old sensor. I could swap the lot for an X100VI but I prefer being able to go out with a different focal length every now and then, just like my film days.

    I got interested in photography in the early eighties and shot with an Olympus OM-2n. I now have, since returning to the hobby, a Canon T7i that I use on the streets mostly with a 24mm pancake lens (38.4mm FFE). I am hoping to purchase an X100F because the use of dials on a camera is so familiar, it has a silent shutter, and it is wonderfully compact and low profile. I also like that it has both a screen and viewfinder. I think your reasoning was spot on that the appeal of this camera has to do with portability and simplicity. It is not a do-it-all camera, but I don't think the folks who buy these want to do it all. I will keep my Canon and associated gear, but I really look forward to hitting the streets with the X100F.

Loved your summing up of what is a beautiful and tactile camera. The Ricoh may be good, but it looks plain and boring and has no viewfinder. I think the X100 series cameras are a great choice as a second camera for someone that already owns a camera system, for someone that's really into street photography, as a travel camera, a family camera and most importantly has a budget near $2000 for a camera. It's not the best choice for anyone that doesn't have a budget near $2,000, for someone who likes to explore different genres of photography without having to have more than one camera. My use case is for example 1) Don't have a budget for a $2000 second camera 2) Do street photography and documentary photography but also sometimes woodland photography, portraits, and occasionally real estate interiors. An X100 camera would only work for my street work and some of my documentary work so I'd need another camera for the other uses. What works for me is a small Panasonic M43 camera with 3 primes lenses, a 30 mm, 50 mm and 85 mm. The 30 mm and 50 mm are Panasonic Leica and I am pretty sure are better than the lens in the X100 cameras. My whole system cost about $1200, albeit used but all excellent or like new condition from MPB. In conclusion, the X100 cameras are obviously brilliant cameras but they aren't the only solution or necessarily the best solution for everyone. Shooting with with just one focal length really improves ones photography but you don't need an X100 to do this. There are many cameras that can be quite portable with just a prime lens, M43 cameras, Fuji X-S10 and 20, Sony A6400 and Sony A7C series for example. I don't like that they hype is leading some newbies to believe that they have this camera to be a good photographer. And no one likes the guy that goes to the party and tells everyone how great their BMW is :-). Y'all hyped the X100V which didn't have IBIS which I have had in all my cameras since 2007 :-). To be a good photographer they need to read books, take workshops, study the work of master photographers, make prints, make books, learn about making bodies of work, not just photos, make exhibits and get out there and shoot a lot. Most of us don't dislike the camera but dislike the hype.

But my purpose is to show and tell people, why I bought the X100VI and help them to understand the camera as it is (a camera for certain purposes) instead of the hype.
    Keep up your great work James. I really enjoy your videos and they help me to improve my photography as a beginner.

      @@JamesParsons1 I've been taking pictures for about 40 years
      I've used a lot of cameras over that time ,( I tend to get bored with the camera I'm using ,and usually trade them in every few years )

      I ask myself ,is this the camera id be happy carrying around all day
      I used to shoot with a Nikon DSLR
      And picked up an old D90 during lockdown
      Maybe it was just using that and my Leica ,they feel solid
      I took a chance with the x100v and ordered it online without trying it out
      It just felt cheap and plasticy ,
      I'm not a fan of the raw files not being DNG , it's a pain having to convert them on my phone
      I have just got a handgrip for it , hopefully that with improve the handling as I have big hands and the grip is quite small as you know.

    I think it's also fair to direct that anger at Fujifilm for creating false scarcity of a product they easily could have ramped production on. Even without scalpers, the camera would be impossible to find because there simply aren't enough being made.

      I'm interested in what you mean by false scarcity and how Fuji created it? I understand this is an important concept used by luxury and exclusive brands (like Rolex and DeBeers), but i'm not sure whether those principles apply to a consumer product?

    • @brianwarnerarts
      @brianwarnerarts 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JamesParsons1 Fuji knows the demand for their X100 line. They've known it for years. Look at the X100V that oversold and lacked supplies to meet demand and ended up being a scalper's paradise. Even today the x100V is overpriced due to lack of supply. Either the business folks at Fuji are idiots, or they simply are creating a high demand for a product by utilizing scarcity. It's hard to prove intent, but we can see the evidence of the result. They claimed this year they would over produce with help from Chinese factories, right? Still they under produce demand - a demand they are well aware of. If they flooded the markets with enough cameras to meet demand (like Nikon, Sony and Canon do), I believe there would be a lot less hype on the camera.

    • @JamesParsons1
      @JamesParsons1  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the global issues that occurred in 2020 caused the shortage. I walked into a shop and bought mine, ahah. I agree; scalpers are the worst kind of people, but Fuji doesn't benefit from that. It only tarnishes their reputation as people start to question what's going on within Fuji.
      Fuji doesn't gain much from undersupplying a camera with massive demand. If they increased their prices like luxury brands like Rolex do, then yeah, I'd agree. They are only limiting their sales by not making more. I'd guess there are some supply chain issues, similar to the ones car manufacturers had, which sent the second-hand market astronomical.
      Yes, they will instantly sell the units produced, but I'm sure they would rather capitalise on the demand while it's still hot, generate greater cash flow, and invest it in other areas of the business.
      Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity or lack of planning.

      @@JamesParsons1 you got to let go of being a fan boy for a moment. I like Fuji but they have a repeat problem of lowering supply. If it happened once in 2020, you might be right. But it happens again with the VI?? It happens with other cameras and lenses? If you think there's no benefit you obviously have missed out on economics 101. Do yourself a favor and lookup demand and supply charts. How do you increase demand? You cut supply. There are many roads to profit, that's just one option: cut supply to build demand and anticipation. Look at the x-E4 as yet another example. They abandoned it, discontinued the E line supposedly, then demand pumps when people realize it's a better camera lens combo (XF 27MM) than the X100* and then the rumors start about an E5. This cycle repeats. It appears to be their business model. I like my Fuji camera and lenses but I don't like how they continue to under supply. But again, if the market was flooded with x100vi's there would be far less demand and more critical analysis of the quality. Maybe they aren't as powerful as Nikon, Sony or Canon and this is how they have to compete.

    • @andrewcrossley2448
      @andrewcrossley2448 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure what you mean by stupid money. Are you referring to Fuji’s pricing or the second hand market? The price increase from V to VI by Fuji reflects the additional technology involved. Think of it as a scaled down XT5 with a good quality prime, but much smaller, lighter and actually better made. As the video pointed out in the right hands for out and about it is a great tool. So is an iPhone 15 Pro Max set to RAW and with decent memory…..but that’s the same money…..
      You could always try a second hand Ricoh like my colleague at work did when he traded in his X100f. He loved the Fuji but as a very keen road cyclist he wanted something even smaller. User cases are all different.

    Long answer : I got into cameras when I was a kid, mainly Sony. Looking for something different, I turned to the X100V, shortly before all the media hype. I was pleased at first, but I'll be honest, this camera, and especially its successor the X100VI, are way overpriced, for what it is. Everything, absolutely everything, just produces a feeling of frustration. The camera's quality isn't incredible, some materials leave a little to be desired, the images are ok... In fact, everything leads to reproducing the argentic rendering without the charm around it. It's just fake. I've never been "proud of my images". They're bland, lazy and boring. I sold all that to buy a Leica m6 in addition to my m9. Now I can say that I produce incredible images. I understand photography. Now it feels real.
    Sorry fuji, but I leave all the hype to the tiktok influencers.
    short answer : they can't afford a Leica, and they are too lazy to get into the film world.
    Sorry, no offense.

      Glad you've found a camera that works for you, that is the most important goal for us as creatives.
      Although, I am surprised you now produce incredible images now you shoot with a Leica, because its the photographer not the camera that makes a good photo, right? Did you feel more creatively curious or perhaps motivated to shoot once you got the Leica? Perhaps that facilitated your journey as a photographer.
      Personally, whether I use my X100V, Leica M11 or Sony A1, I can create the same images with any of them. Rather, depending on the conditions and shooting environment, i'll pick up the right tool for the job.
