Thanks! This is 40 mm tubing with 2 mm wall and the slot in the middle has a width of 12 mm. I ended up going this route and not 8020 style only because of price.
@@ivznh Yeah, 8020 is expensive stuff. I have a recycler/scrap yard near me that gets some in occasionally and they sell aluminum for $2/lb (as of a couple of years ago). I think they price nicer pieces individually though.
Wow! I saw Dave Moulton's rig in Ridgefield Park N.J. 45 years ago. It was cruder than that! It was built on a single vertical slab of plate steel with sliding fixtures that bolted down. He made 6 bikes in a row being a semi custom builder so he didn't need as much versatility. Not sure how he brazed the other side, though. Lugged construction tended to hold things in line though. Expansion from heating has to be corrected with final alignment anyway though. Still a bit of art mixed with fixturing!
My priority with this fixture was to make it as versatile as possible. I can braze it both sides as te tubes are ca 10 cm away from the main structure. Now that I’m making a lugged frame I’m glad I took the long route of making things as perfect as possible because all tubes fitted perfectly with the CAD drawings.

This is a very nice jig! I was planning on making an 8020 style jig but I like this more open style.
Is the square tube 1-1/2” x 1/8” wall?
