Technically yeah, there is a no dump zone usually anywhere from 3 to about 12-15mi (give it or take) from the coast, close to the coast no, further in yeah. Most big yachts will have some type of treatment before dumping though, so it semi cleaned or completely cleaned, they might even reusethe water, small boats not really, they dump straight to the ocean/sea. Ocean liners and cruise ships have cleaning stations onboard, so essentially for washing your hands face and body and what not you use treated (cleaned and purified) toilet water. th-cam.com/video/5Z7bTmZVPTI/w-d-xo.html Check this out
Yes you can dump raw sewage (black water) into the ocean if you are over 12 nautical miles away from land, If you are within this you need a sewage treatment plant to disinfect the sewage before dumping. However Marpol regulations (marine pollution) has some special areas where you have to disinfect if you are in them no matter how far away you are from land the Mediterranean is one of them. Smaller vessels like these yachts will just store it and discharge it when they get to port.
@@chessyp00fs same for food waste, food leftovers, potato peelings etc but not plastic. You are allowed to dump in the sea if > 12 miles from shore, >3 miles if ground leftovers...

I am a private jet Captain and find this fascinating. The boss has a 48 m yacht and I spend most of the summer hanging about various parts of she Med while the Boss does whatever one does on a private yacht, fishing etc.......hardly! I worked as a waiter on QE2 last century to finance the pilot license ha ha, my small contribution to merchant seamanship! Great stuff, keep the vlogs coming, nice to learn how things are done on the yacht. We have very little interaction with the yacht crew as they are always busy when we are “off duty” in Nice , Olbia, Bodrum etc.
you should vlog about being a jet captain i would love to watch also you could make a lot of money doing so and i assure you you would have a big following. by the way i am in Fairmount in nothing here but flat land and corn .
Very nice message at the end of the video. There are many ways to help with our oceans health, and this one is on the top of the list. Thank You For Your Help!!
Nice to see how you discharge the sewage on the ships. I am a mechanic for the sewage system on Rhein cruises myself. Nice to see the other perspective!
Great to see you back doing what for me I find you most enjoying; Talking about all the different facets of AWOL. Fantastic. Your command deck looks so much bigger when you are filming than when Nick was filming, do you use a wide angle lens? Anyway brilliant to see you back. And your numbers are creeping up. I just wish that all people watching your videos would subscribe it's only a click on the bell in the right hand side. You so deserve it Tristan.
This was very interesting how systems on the yacht work and processes even if it were justnsewage. Still all these items and systems have to be adressed and its fascinating.
8:36 i think its much safe and ok, just take a bucket of water than to tap your hose to sea water.. to make sure there is no grey water spill to the sea.👍
Very interesting. On a chartered cruise, assuming eight guests and a full crew, how many many gallons/liters of gray and black water does AWOL generate in one day?
so 90 gal/6 days grey + 30 gal black, call it 60 gal per person per week. AWOL 6 guests + 7? crew = 15 x 60 = about 900 gal / week... that's about 3500 litres, or the size of AWOL's tank (assuming you mean US gal). Given Tristan's reply a bit below that they usually only pump 1-2 times a week, that sounds about right.
I'm the guy that you have seen in the Monaco yacht show. I saw awol today in cannes, it was actually pretty impressive, but you we're not here at that time. Hope to see you again
Tristan - your the man ! It takes way more than just navigating skills to be a yacht captain !! Is there an agency that monitors super yachts and when and where they discharge waste ?
Very Good Slav ! I actually like the protective floor coverings both inside and outside. So you ac cumulate 3000 liters daily - that seems like a lot !
My superyacht the sewerage works on a a Stern 'hangover' system. ... You hang your bum over the stern of the 7mt boat and let the waves wash you clean. Effective and helps to burley the fish.
It is a dirty job, but everyone has to do it. I hope the corporate stooges on the large cruise liners watch this and maybe learn by example. I Support the 'CLEAR OCEAN PACT'🤜🤛
Those were my observations also. I would think that the boat builders and marinas would have a more convenient arrangement to perform this important function.
Hi Tristan and crew. Very interesting. Can you show us in detail the work shop on board and what kind of things you have had to fabrivate/repair at sea. If you have already, send me the link to the appropriate video. Thanks. Stu from Argentina.
Look up Robert Maxwell... Millionaire British newspaper owner who had a habit of waking up in the middle of the night and instead of using the en suite in his cabin he'd just walk onto the deck and piss over the side. Unfortunately if you're old you can feel faint when you get up in the middle of the night and relieve yourself, and the assumption is he fainted and fell overboard. It wasn't until the next morning anyone realised he wasn't on the boat anymore. And after his death it turned out he'd been stealing from the newspaper pension fund for years.
I'm not familiar with that area but as general comparison there are some coastal marinas in the UK that provide a free service, inland costs can be USD25 per pumpout (not metered) in the USA there is a state sponsored system where marinas are capped at charging USD5 per pumpout (not metered) but other places will charge USD 60 for 1,000 Litres (200 Gallons). Cheaper (if you are cost conscious) to macerate, treat and then discharge into the sea outside the 12 mile limit.
Was thinking the same thing. Did the math and that's around 2400 Liters (634 gallons (US)) in 24 hours. Seems like a lot, though I'm sure a majority of that is grey-water rather than black-water.
Fascinating video about something I’d always wondered about... how exactly does one clean the dirty water tank....??? Really interesting process and a great video about something so essential; thanks.
I notice the discharge hose looks smaller diameter then the hose used by land motor coaches. Which is 4". I suspect its because the boat hose is pumped/pressurized and not gravity feed.
I like this process, you arrive to your destination and park your yacht and cleaning service arrives. Voila ... the solution. The question, is the service included with the slot or is an extra charge? What about if their is no slot or you just don't want to park it, is their one for only that? Is their an App where you can find all these on board travel points inside the yacht signal?
Since I've not been yachting, yet, I can only speak to what I know, which is draining grey/black water tanks on 5th wheels, we ALWAYS wear gloves. Even tho it's a boat, you are still dealing with sewage outlets & hoses, right? Just a thought:)
So I assume when you are doing longer passages where you fill the tanks before getting to a dump location, you can and do dump into the water? Is there a requirement that any treatment, addatives etc are done to the sewage prior or during the open sea dumps? I know they are allowed but I was really surprised that while at shore you have to have the tanks pumped every day. I would have thought there would be enough space for up to a week between dumps possibly, but i guess unlike some RV's Ive had, it looks like your black and gray tanks are combined as one, or possibly seperate tanks that get discharged through a common outlet connector. Still seems as though needing to empty a 3000 liter tank each day is quite a few people taking long showers and there must be a whole bunch of pooping going on too haha. Another great video Tristan, very informative. Keep it up!!
Trystan, I had sleeves made that we would slide over all hoses and cables used to service the 108ft Broward I used to run. It made transferring things like waste so much easier and all but eliminated scuff marks and damage from hoses, They were super easy to make and use
Great video - another mystery solved - thank you! But can I ask - When you are out cruising with guests, how many days capacity do you have in the black/grey water tank? I always thought they would do the black first then the grey to flush the pipes. Guess we learn something new every day.
Thanks for the video Captain, I asked that question.
I owned a small porto-poty business for events. There is money in sewage !
Very interesting. On a chartered cruise, assuming eight guests and a full crew, how many many gallons/liters of gray and black water does AWOL generate in one day?
If the boat is like an RV there are fluid level indicators in the control room.
You watch the levels carefully on every trip.
so 90 gal/6 days grey + 30 gal black, call it 60 gal per person per week. AWOL 6 guests + 7? crew = 15 x 60 = about 900 gal / week... that's about 3500 litres, or the size of AWOL's tank (assuming you mean US gal).

They don't put the valves and other things in very convenient places. You'd think flash docks would have sewer hookup pipes under the wharf.
Those were my observations also. I would think that the boat builders and marinas would have a more convenient arrangement to perform this important function.
Given all of the lobster, champagne, caviar & fois gras consumed on a super yacht - that sewage should be of such quality that they pay YOU for it. :)

also on the boat the waste goes through a macerator before going into the holding tank so there are no solids.
