  • On its surface, The Princess Bride appears to be a lighthearted film but the innards of its world are darker than you'd expect. Today we offer you a character breakdown of the tragic hero Inigo Montoya, the legendary Spanish swordsman at the center of the film.

    Aside from becoming the next Dread Pirate Roberts, Inigo is not directionless or lost...he's free. He didn't just get revenge, he got justice. The crime of his father's murder was punished.He gets the rest of his life back. Inigo's life ceased to be revenge and became...possibility. His filial duty fulfilled.

    The book includes the origin stories for both Inigo and Fezzik. Each story is a chapter on it's own. The book also replaces the relatively easy way Fezzik and Inigo get to Westley in the dungeon in the movie with a much more fun multi-leveled zoo the two have to descend into. Even Humperdinck's story is fleshed out considerably in the book.

    Notes from a B-Movie Extra;
    From what I understand of it, historically Inigo would've gotten recruited for a small land war in Spain(if the Movie's anything to go by) so he has killed before. If Fezini's to be taken for his word(and since he wasn't talking to Wesley yet he had no reason to lie), then he must've ran into Inigo not long after he was released from service and preyed on his slightly broken mental state (Montoya had to've been around his really early 20's and was doing what any young former Soldier would do at the time: drink the bad memories away). Fezini, no being an idiot after all, would've pounced on the chance to have such a gifted swordsman as an employee and manipulated the poor boy into a life of crimes ....
    This is Big Nate signing off,
    Happy Fall Y'all!

      The book goes deeper into it, and from what i recall he had been involved in some kind of conflict before Fezini found him. Also the book has a whole nother story within it that is supposedly based on a true story from the authors life, except the author later admitted to making it up to make it seem like The Princess Bride was a real story before he wrote it.

    1) for good fun... check out Jill Bearup's breakdown of the Indigo v Wesley fight. She has experience as a stage fighter and breaks it down from that standpoint. GREAT FUN!
    2) Christopher Guest doesn't get nearly enough credit as "The Six Fingered Man" in this film! His line to Wesley in The Pit Of Dispair about how he is collecting date on his "experiment" is one of the best and creepiest lines I've ever heard in film.

    Well I think many of us would do the same thing as Inigo. See your parent be murdered in front of your eyes can cause someone to make three choices. 1 you either except it and try to movie on, 2 you fall into self destruction with alcohol, drugs, etc, or you can seek revenge to get closure but there is a saying, "if you seek revenge, get ready to dig 2 graves".

    • @demonzabrak
      @demonzabrak ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’d like to point out that the expression “be ready to dig two graves” is literally just saying “if you want revenge, be ready to die for it.”
      It isn’t actually advice against revenge. It’s advice for deciding if you should seek revenge.
      If it’s really worth it, it will be worth dying for. If it isn’t… it isn’t, so don’t bother.
      People also commonly misunderstand “blood is thicker than water” and “jack of all trades” as being for family and against versatility when they’re the opposite, because people keep shortening them.
      “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb,” or “the oaths you swear are more important than you parents.”
      “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” It was a compliment. Written by Shakespeare. About the practical utility of being good at many things, even if you aren’t the best at any of them.
      Also the thing about bootstraps was people being facetious about economic class struggle. “Just pull yourself up by your bootstraps” was originally sarcasm. They knew it was impossible. That was the joke.
      This has been a PSA about phrases I never see used correctly.

    And, as an aside, like Die Hard before it, let us not forget that The Princess Bride is ALSO a Christmas movie.
    Note that the grandson's room is decorated for Christmas. Poor little dude is sick during Christmas break. Grandpa is there to read to him and make him feel better since he can't go enjoy playing in the snow (also seen out the window at one point).

    You are very perceptive in your analysis. From a personality (MBTI) perspective, Inigo Montoya is an ISFP. A man driven by a strong sense of morals above all else, who feels very deeply about everything. A personality who tends to devote themselves to a singular goal in life. They aren't willful masterminds like INTJ, but they are devoted to their desires with a childlike purity. He is ultra-aware of his surroundings, being the first to spot the man in black, sensing is an important component to the ISFP, which have a strong desire to make their passions into physical reality. They are often artists because of this, and Inigo is no different, treating his craft of swordsmanship similarly. The man in black even recognizes this when he compares Inigo to a stained-glass window. Inigo is not a thinker by nature but the type of thinking he defaults to can clearly recognize others who do. Thus he sought out experts to teach him sword fighting and the man in black himself to come up with the plan to enter the castle because he knew that was the man for the job. Your confusion about whether Inigo is a good man is understandable but must be taken in the above context along with understanding that each of the 16 personalities have a weakness and contradiction about themselves. ISFP's weakness is they lack a sense of understanding of consequences and prefer not to dwell on the possibilities and options. This means that Inigo is prone to behavior unbecoming of his morals now and then and this too is a deep source of pain for him as he repeatedly fails to meet up to his own moral standards. This weakness also shows itself once Inigo caries out his life's devotion and obtains revenge. He cannot conceive of what he could possibly do now. This is also likely how Inigo became a drunk in the first place, as his goal of finding his enemy seemed out of reach, he was rudderless and devoid of motivation in life and only sought to drown his sorrows. He does it again when he "goes back to the beginning" and it's only Fezzek's nursing him back to health that he realizes his life's goals are actually in reach assuming he can obtain the brains and skills of the man in black. It is these rudderless periods of Inigo's life that he is forced to work for someone else's goals and desires and its this weakness that only adds to his tragic nature as a character. Inigo is a hero from a certain point of view, and it is his incredible sense of morals and justice that drives him... something that is made clear when reflected by the six fingered man's opposing callousness, unfeeling pragmatism, and strong immoral behavior. Unfortunately, we can postulate that this is not a story that ends "Happily ever after". Inigo will likely return to a life of self-destruction without his life's passion to drive him. His main hope is finding that new passion... perhaps as the new Dred {irate Roberts? Sadly, his sense of morals will likely make him very unsuited to this pursuit, and he will likely be ineffectual, and then it will be "work, work, work all the time".

    I think it's clear that the mercenaries and pirates had killed a plenty. But this film is for kids, and little boys like the grandson think that rogues and pirates killing and stealing and stuff is cool!
    The way the Man in Black talks about his exceptionless policy of killing everyone rather than taking prisoners ... Hey, it's well known and he's proud of it rather than denying it or softening it. And Inigo seems to not have any problem with taking up a new life as The Dread Pirate Roberts.
    Part of the charm of the film is that it leans into a little boy's idea of honor and "goodness". The Man in Black and the hired swordsman are both cool killers, and yet it only takes a few words for them to honor each other to an honorable fair fight.

    22:00 Problem. If Buttercup did wind up stuck with Humperdink, she wouldn't have faired any better than anyone else. Remember, he was planning to murder her for his false flag operation and start a war of conquest. She would not have lived happily ever after. 😔

    1. Buttercup was going to be murdered AFTER the wedding, NOT living a gilded cage life in the castle.
    2. Montoya was offered the job of "The Dread Pirate Roberts" AFTER confessing his life had no direction.
    *You literally implied the complete opposite of the story's reality in order to fit YOUR false narrative. a.k.a - A lie of omission.*
