Note: I've used AOMEI Partition Assistant rather than Macrorit Partition Expert for all operations.
It appears that padding with zeros fixes bad sectors on different models and is not typical only for a certain model. Samsung had 1 bad sector constantly moving around the disk, while Kingston had multiple problems. The disk seemed dead, the OS crashed, read 15 MB/sec and suddenly became 100% healthy.
Wasn't able to use this method on a SCY S3000 NVMe. Software didn't recognize the partition, and I think other tools saw the partition as raw. Only got IO errors with Windows based tools. Clonezilla came to the rescue by being able to create an image, then restoring the image to another drive. Was more interested in replacing the drive than "repair" but needed to recover the data.
Clever idea, but here is problem. Some nvme will stuck, when they try to read from broken sector. So if you attempt to move the partition to rewrite this area, it will freeze in middle of the move. Goodbye data. Thus the better way is: detect failure blocks numbers with linux "badblock" utility in raw read mode (filesystem irrelevant), then instruct "hdparm" utility to write into that specific block unconditionally.
Hi, this solution is not a "save them all" I wish it was but it can help a vast majority as per feedback I'm getting.
My NVME was already trying to read from the sector, that's why my system was stuttering hard and filling the event viewer full of read errors.

Heya, after power loss my D_NVME shows 4KB in bad sectors. Because surface test don't show any problematic sector, I do Fill with zero to all drive. When finish, disk need to initialize again. After that make NTFS partition and when recheck it with chkdsk /r /f /x, bad sectors disappear. Thank you.
Hi, I cloned my HDD (it only had 4kb of bad sectors) to a new SSD. After the process, I ran the CHKDSK command on the new SSD drive, I couldn't believe it, the 4k bad sectors were also on the new drive! On the other hand, I used macrorit to do a surface test on the new drive, guess what... no bad sectors at all!!! I don't really understand what's going on, any suggestions?

Cloning actually clones everything, but dont worry. Its like I said in the video, ssd dont get bad sectors the same way a mechanical HDD does. Do a scan on every partition, if macrorit comes clean then you are ok. Also check event viewer to see if there are any corruption hapening in the bad sectors.

Hello, while doing this scan, a red dot appears, then the computer gives a blue screen and shuts down. This indicates that the disk is completely corrupted.

There is a WinPE version of this software that you can boot off so it's not running off your system drive. It has the full interface just the same as the software being used here.

how do you know size of bad sector? 3 gb as you mention how to calculate
Been having some highly confusing issues, when I try to resize the volume using this method I get error "Code: 3223, Error Text: ERR_NTFS_LOAD_BITMAP" and it doesn't work. I frankly don't know what to do anymore.
Well, my SSD has a few bad sectors somewhere in the middle, in the area between 51-57% of it. Does this method offer the possibility to remove only the problem area, and then I can merge the two good parts?
Yes, you can but its a bit more difficult. I would backup/move everything to another drive and erase the damaged one to be easier, take less time to split and less risky. Good luck.
I have 100% health and performance of SSD and when I tried to create disk using this macrorit it keep saying ERROR missing device.
Hdd regenerator and Hard disc sentinental still shows nar sector in my hard drive after I have wiped entire hdd with 0's

after power loss my NVME dont initialize windows, dont format and in the diskpart dont shows in the list disk, only in the list volume but with type RAW... i tried to delete volume, format, chndsk, etc... but nothing works.
Hi, I'm sorry to hear that, looks really extreme.
The first thing you need to do is: Get inside your BIOS and see if the drive is recognized, if it is, then its a good sign and maybe, it can be recovered. Search "how to initialize new disks", my Strix Arion NVME video also covered this. You will lose your data though... if its not already lost.
In the case the driveis not detected. Take your NVME out of the slot and clean the contacts gently, then using your manual, put the NVME in another slot, the one that is fed by the chipset. This is more like a troubleshoot to see if anything is wrong on the board side.

Nvm I just did trial and error. Single bad sector was dead smack in the middle, less than 1mb
Wipe Data didn't "fix" the sector unfortunately.
@@MeepMeep88 You did wipe with zeros right? If the bad sector is due to a worn off nand, it will be completely lost. Just merge the good partitions back and leave the part with bad sector out to avoid data corruption in the future. Check SSD health because if you have one of these, its a warning for failure, always backup your data. Good luck
@@LocalIT I think it was because I didn't "complete" the action. When you X out of everything a promp comes up saying "You have x amount of procedures still active. Do you want to complete all the actions" or something like that. So I clicked ok then when I went back to scan the partition that had the broken sector, it wasn't there anymore after I merged it.

Do you have any tip for a faulty SSD (Asgard) that I delete files and partitions but as soon as I do it, it restore the files and partitions? I've tried TestDisk, Diskpart... Nothing works. It seems that the MFT is broken but I can't fix it no matter I try.
Hey, You can try the wipe with zeros in multiple passes with macrorit but it will definitely cause excessive wear on the ssd. But hey, if its already unrecoverable, its worth a try. After that try again the diskpart. Good luck.
You started in Drive G: ROG and ended in Drive C:Corsair. I am not sure it will work in the SO disk C: without messing up the boot sectors, fat, etc. Has anyone tried that without loosing information?
It will work on the C: that is where I had the bad sectors. The G: drive part of the video was just an example as I didn't want to repeat that on the C: Again and I had to finish the video, it serves only as an example.
It won't mess with boot or loose any information. 100% guaranteed if you follow the steps on the video.

Why are we avoiding the Defrags, formatting, and extensive safe deletes?
Hi, in a SSD, defragmentation is unnecessary. Theres no need to optimize data location since you dont have spinning disks. Complete formats and Extensive safe deletions will wear out the SSD's health really fast too, unless you work in a super critical thing where data privacy is everything.. Then for the average user it should be avoided.
SSD's wear out with each write, its how they work. I know it sounds bad but they will last quite a long time if you avoid these heavy write tasks.

@@LocalIT Arright... Makes sense. I'm still the guy who uses spinning HDDs most of his file storage, since the price/gb is the lowest. I just started moving over to NVMe drives for my day to day use (OS/boot/gaming.)

wait, how to know where does the red colour sector starts? i got the scan_log. it says

Starting bad sector location: 2.800 TB, size: 1.000 MB.
so if i change my scan area to aroud 2.799 TB and 2.801 TB, i should find it? i tried to scan this area but no bad sector found.

in the end i manually found it, what a pain.
using 3.639TB was a mistake, should use the total size shown eg. 3,815,446.8 MB total x 76.94% and then widen from there
found the bad guys but after commit and restart i got error code 4652 ERR_NTFS_CPY_FILE

This is not a repair, this to avoid, skip, disable, exclude bad sectors. But okay, I have and old OCZ Agility 3 60GB drive running ZorinOS 15 and in the disk manager it shows 8 bad sectors. I don't know how to check where the bad sectors are exactly. Any ideas?
SSD Dont get damaged in the same way as a mechanical HDD. So after a long search i found out that there are a so called, "virtually" damaged or corrupted sectors, probably after a crash. These can be repaired as they are not physically damaged.
If your health in the SSD is above 90% those bad sectors can probably be fixed. The area where the windows marked them as bad, need to be written over. If the health is bellow 80%, there is a chance that the area where you have the bad sectors is worn off and you wont get them back. You need a good tool like macrorit and the scan will tell you where they are.

hey boss thanks for sharing I am trying to fix an issue that we have with an NMVE 2TB Kingston suddenly it stopped working (Windows 11 and data on it) now I get plugged it as an external drive to another computer using an enclosure, it recognizes the drive and 2 volumes on it unfortunately they are not accesible no more. Any ideas? I am trying chkdsk to repair the partitions but it gets stuck and nothing happens after that 😢
Hi, not sure, you didn't had it with bitlocker by any chance? It should be acessible except personal data in user profiles. Have you tried scanning with macrorit for damage? Good luck

When you know you have one (bad sectors), then its too late, the data on those bad sectors is already gone.

I just got a new Integral Msata SSD from Amazon. First attempt to Clonezilla my old drive to it revealed bad sectors. Then I saw the file structure was coming out as RAW and corrupted, which can't even be run through chkdsk. I presume I'm right to return it?

I would return it as Amazon is pretty awesome with the returns policy, state that its not working properly. Also, mSATA is not a great buy. Get a nvme if you have the chance and the board support it. @@LocalIT Thanks for the reply. It's to go into an old HP Folio 13 laptop that only has the Msata interface. I bought the disk last week, so will submit the return.
Try contacting them first for a replacement if you still have time left and really want a mSATA. But normally they will emit a return label. Ive returned 2 articles in the last months. No issues.

@@m.h.m.a9406 If you have green light for a full erase, just do what's on the video without the partitioning.
But in order to do so, you will have to get another drive to be the primary boot drive, install OS there and use the "damaged" one as secondary.

@@m.h.m.a9406 Dont do any partition adjustment, erase all partitions and wipe with zeros the entire drive. Then create a brand new partition.

Hi would you mind to help me, so when i tried to scan SSD on macrocit i found a lot bad sectors, but the scan apparently got stuck, then i check the SSD on task manager it showed 100% activity times, i've wait almost an hour but the scan got stucked, do you have another method or way?
That sounds really bad, I would backup all your data ASAP, move all you can to a new drive and then try wiping all partition with zeros to see if it can be saved. Good luck

@@AtharahmenIs that drive your main? Looks like some OS data might be there and it hungs up. If so, maybe use another drive for Windows and then try save the data from the damaged one.

Hi, Its not the same. Make sure you get a good health reading from the vendors software, crystalmark or even HWiNFO64. On a SSD anything bellow 60-70 is worrying and 22 its like "The reaper is near". Try to double check its health. Good Luck

@@STEVANUSGameDev a 1tb hard drive reporting 1,8tb is not ok, that will definitely give you errors. Try using another tool for formating the hard drive, other than the windows native tool. Good luck

@@LocalIT Its funny how other software when i did surface test didnt find any errors, but this one find. I will keep eye now on my nvme ssd, and after one week i will check again. if there will be again i think i will go for warranty.

I'm noticing my corsair nvme dropping fast too while others like WD and OCZ are really great. I would try and check if there is a firmware update that can address this behavior. Samsung had similar issues but they were quickly fixed.

Yeah, they do. Sometimes they can have critical fails, however, its very very rare, even among cheap ones. We have a critical fail rate of 2 for each 20000 in a retail 24/7 environment.
