rooting a phone isnt a failure of security. the only person who could root this phone - would be the intended user who has decided he wants to root his device. this does not impact security.
readyrepairs Rooting is taking advantage of a security hole, so it is a security issue. You should be smart about the apps you give root access to since It will give them control of everything. In a sense the user is hacking their phone to gain full access of it.
*If you want security get a Blackberry* The new to be released Passport it's a breath of fresh air in the smartphone industry with some cool inovations. OS10 is a very underrated OS, it runs every android app, but is very smooth much more reliable than Android OS, almost like an iOS that runs android apps but doesn't crash or lag
I wonder if all those "security" features and passwords and pin codes really do anything at all. not that long ago there was an antivirus app on the marketplace that was eventually proven to be useless, it didn't do anything to the phone. I wonder if that's the case here as well. are your files really encrypted? the text messages you send disappear from the inbox of whoever got them? if not then it's not much help to delete just the ones on your own device since the other device probably wont be a black phone so they would get all your conversation history from the persons you were talking to. and do the apps really are prohibited from accessing whatever you choose to deny them? I don't know how it could be tested but someone who knows should test and see if the apps do or do not send your information to their servers when you opt to deny them access.
Verliebt If you were to check out the full review, you'd have many of those questions answered: pocketnow.com/2014/08/14/blackphone-review-security-above-all ^M
Pocketnow thank you for the reply it did answer most of the questions. one remains though. what happens to the files if I choose to encrypt them? if I do that and then connect the phone to my PC via USB, and I browse the contents of the phone, will I be able to access, copy, delete files? I even read Joe Levi's article on encryption, but it did not mention that. seems like I would be able to do anything I want to those files from my PC especially since they are encrypted when you power off the device.
Pocketnow Verliebt If you have successfully input your encryption code at power-on, your files are "unencrypted" and accessible anywhere. That's what lets your phone have access to them. If you connect to a computer via USB, you must first unlock your phone before you'd be able to access them. Put another way, the files are unencrypted, but not accessible without the PIN/Password to unlock the phone. If you entered the correct PIN/Password, then yes, you could access, copy, and delete files. If you did not, then no, the files would not be accessible to you.
Note : Due to Blackphone 2 BP2 coming to End-of-Life product, no new updates provided. Due to Blackphone 2 BP2 now coming to End-of-Life product. , does this make this phone now obsolete and not secured to be use?
BP1 includes a suite of apps. Silent Circle is only one small component of the overall suite -- and you cannot currently install PrivatOS on a non-Blackphone, so all the benefits of the core OS are fairly exclusive to the device.
Right, the phone sounds great. But I'd love to seen an app that can be used on android phones like App Ops that doesn't require rooting. I love the security BP1 looks like they are offering.
With a phone this unpopular and discrete; someone who manages to steal it from you, may not even figure out what it is or how to use it. This is a huge selling point for blackphone
My thing is that I don't think this would be a primary phone. I feel a phone like this would be best used for the things you do on the side that you, I'm assuming, wouldn't want people to know about. For example (if you watched Breaking Bad), this would've more than likely been the phone Walter White used instead of that flip phone. So its short comings are okay as long as that's the kind of position it plays.
ArsTechnica talked about the root and how you had to actually have either owned the phone to do it or somehow get the phone AND the persons passcodes in order to do it. People really shouldn't talk about things they don't read up on.
Wow The fact that you're attacking like that means that you have not read up on the phone itself and definitely have never tried it. Put your eyes to use and read the news from trusted sources who have checked it out BEFORE you start commenting. Thank you
Maybe go read the full review linked in the description, or listen to the podcast where we discuss this issue in depth: pocketnow.com/2014/08/09/pocketnow-weekly-108-blackphone-lg-samsung ^M
Pocketnow I did read the full review. The fact that the "most secure" phone for consumers got hacked so easily without even unlocking the bootloader is a significant fact. In other words, you can not just put baking paper into a strainer and claim that it is now sealed. If Android, even forked, was secure, BlackBerry (the real security paramount) would have already adopted it (it would save them a lot trouble closing the app gap, etc.).
PixelByter You have to have access to the physical phone and have to know the PIN/Password to be able to root it. If someone has your phone and your password, you've got other things to worry about than root.
***** its still no excuse for not protecting the phone from unauthorized root access. If the manufacturer was so concerned about security they would have restricted access to the OS as others have done. It gets me to wonder what other weaknesses are there to be uncovered.
It's seems like i can just load cyanogenmod on my phone, encrypt the data, and install all the apps the blackphone has and then you'd have your very own blackphone no spec sacrifice anywhere.
this phone seems to be made by 2011 standards : force closes, lag ram, viewing angles, processing problems, all sounds like android from the Galaxy S2 generation
Rubus Roo The NSA and CIA are actively recording data about virtually every single phone call in the WORLD and you're asking if people are "paranoid"? Paranoid went out the window as soon as Snowden started reporting what the NSA was really doing. Now it's just "being cautious".
***** well said. Unless u are completely off the grid..the local police can even find u through your phone OEM Manufacturers. Samsung states in the privacy policy that they will give all info if asked.
Nividia was the first dual core chip with the LG g2x and the first quad core chip with the one x+ they couldn't build chips then and they can't build em now. *sigh*
the blackphone is not secure it does not even have a security award. If one wants a secure phone one should buy a blackberry which has been more secured
kc3vv It also does not have an award for Best Pie at the State Fair. Blackphone is more secure than virtually anything you can buy. That security is its own reward.
***** you have to kidding, if it's not certified then you can not claim that the Blackphone is more secure than anything you can buy. There is just no proof to your claims. If you try to sell this to any serious company they won't even give you the time of the day without the necessary certificates and proof of performance.
Typically when someone says they're worried about their privacy, they're referring to NSA spying. Blackphone has nothing that they can't hack. They can still see your calls, texts, emails, browser history, etc, even with all these security features enabled.
The blackphone is a modified "Wiko Wax" which only costs 200€... Check it out, save money for the hardware, except if you really care about the 400€ ROM...
I remember when I first found out about this phone I was like nice, but it really is nothing other than a cheap quality phone stripped from google operations and packed with other apps. I basically already had a black phone the way I had my LG NITRO set up, now I have my LG G3 and going to do the same with it. The only good thing about this phone is that it has no google footprint, unless you install the play store or you tube but even then it doesn't have all the other google crap. Maybe the ROM will be leaked and it would be a good one to use but that's it. Thanks to hackers and root, we have our privacy back on any other android and don't need to buy this no name phone. Perhaps this is just what the NSA wants you to use anyway?
i think this phones about as good as the mega...wtf were they thinking..you missed a few things..unfortunately the phone didnt have the options for you to show..lol..wow..these new devices are amazing...the crap they do...and dont do...i love technology and the ideas developers come up with to be the new!!..like the 3d lg thrill and evo 3d...i had to get one...then i wanted to pass out after 30 mins of using 3d..lol..love this channel
I find it funny how the most paranoid people are mostly just basement dwelling PC gamers who barely leave the house and no one cares to find out what they doing.
The strongest and weakest link in this phone are the apps because when the "trail" subscription runs out and if you don't want to play and more for software that cost a lot you are stuck with basically in my eyes a brick.
***** To root the Blackphone a person must (1) have physical access to the phone and (2) know the PIN/Password protecting it. If someone has both, you've got more to worry about than root.

Peter Blanco Thanks for the support! ^M
Pocketnow Anytime, keep up the great work!
Agreed, whole heartily. .
Still sad that he left.
Zachary Huck Just go on MrMobile then! His reviews have improved there :)
Good review, 1 question tho, any gel left lol?
Gel, yes. Running critically low on mousse, though. ^M

This is a great idea, I can't wait to see the next version!
Maybe you should just focus on a BP1 App. Something you can install on NON ROOTED phones to block access to contacts, emails, phone calls etc. ?
BP1 includes a suite of apps. Silent Circle is only one small component of the overall suite -- and you cannot currently install PrivatOS on a non-Blackphone, so all the benefits of the core OS are fairly exclusive to the device.

Why is Amazon recommended?
Not much people use it maybe and very secure because no one wants to hack it xD
All the features that should have Come with blackberry
Have you even used a BlackBerry? LOL!
That permissions system needs to be in stock Android.
Hold on. Why wouldn't you just get whatever phone you want and just deploy mdm on it?
You can use app ops :-)
