WSL should be ashamed that this is how the whole season ends. I’m Aussie and stoked for Steph but this system to decide THE WORLD CHAMP at this break in pretty average conditions ! Time to go back , why this system was introduced baffles me and the majority of my mates. 👎
Agreed. I think carissa was ahead by 11,000 points and then she has one off day in junk waves and loses the title. The point of a world tour is to find the best surfer through a variety of waves around the world, which this year was Carissa.
It seemed that Steph could sense the historic opportunity on hand and lifted her performance accordingly. She was easily the best surfer in the finals but, as she acknowledged, Carissa had been the best performer throughout the year.
So why does WSL do points if anyone who secures for top five can win a title? Before it was based on points solely, and you could win a title in the middle of the season if no one could numerically catch you. I don’t get it now. If Steph was in 5th how can she beat Riss who was in first with points?
@@calnative4904 yeah, that’s what I don’t get. All of a sudden the WSL has new rules for titles? It makes no sense. You just gotta place 5th overall to win the title now??
@@pyzelphantom4355 not exactly, it was all on the line all season, and the person wearing yellow was actually the one who showed that when it was on the line, they won more consistently than everyone else. Steph was there all season. If your statement was remotely true, she’d have been in yellow all season like Riss was.
I think the idea of the finals is good, but if this is the best wave in all of California then a) it sucks to be Californian, and b) you can hand all future world titles to Toledo as he is hands down the best surfer in 3 - 4 foot mush
wsl finals is all about $$$. it not about crowning the best surfer of the year in all conditions. both felipe and carrisa moore were so far ahead of everyone at the end of the regular season.... they were both deserved champions. steff great effort to win the one day repocharge, but what you said in your interview was correct. you feel carissa was the real world champ
Carissa had over 10,000 over Steph , made into the top 5 by a miracle . Had a day when all went her way and won , was it fair ? While Carissa worked hard the entire season and end up loosing . WSL is destroying the CT with these new rules , wonder where these crap comes from
I do agree with you but Steph did miss the first event @ pipe because of covid and it was a good fight for her to make her way back up the rankings all season and just scrap into this silly format finals she probably would have been ranked higher if she didnt miss pipe.
Where has this Steph been the last 3 years? In this form hands down the best female surfer, that was next level. There was a glimpse of this phenom at keramas the other year, but otherwise she's been missing in action IMO
So you crush it all year, beating people in waves of consequence, and what decides the world champ is a wave a novice wouldn't hesitate to drop in on? Such a bogus format.
100% de acuerdo. el wsl va enfocando en hacer $$$$. no les importa si el mejor surfer por el año es el campion. el wsl sin verguenzas. felicitaciones fekipe y carissa, los verdaderos campiones de 2022...!
She barely made the cut, she happened to have a good day and won the event. As Gilmore herself said, Carissa was the best surfer throughout the entire year.
Not all year mate, was probably her worst year in tour. Barely made heats, she was pushed through a lot by the judges to make the final five. But on the day was the best surfer by a mile
A lot of comments against Stephanie not having a good year. It does not matter, when she is the champion. She won regardless. It’s the only sport where the condition is not controlled. You do what you can with the wave you get. Was she getting amazing waves and just wasting them?!? I did not follow her year I just watched her matches in the finals and yes some where low scores but obviously so was her competitor. That’s just how I see it.
made the best of some pretty bad waves ... One thing I think most CT surfers (women and men alike) need to work on is "flow", though understandably hard in these conditions. In the 70s, 80s, and 90s, they had flow. Then small boards came along, and everyone jumped on board. Now we have wobble - across the entire field, mens and womens. All of them need to watch The Search more often. Bring back the 6'4" - maybe a good ole merrick M4 - bet we'd see better surfing. CT surfing now is all about "setting up the big maneuver" (the crowd pleaser). If it's really speed, power, AND flow, not many should be getting 10s these days, as flow is gone. Not picking on this heat - was just easy to see in these waves. JJ is one of only ones left with flow now that Mick and Joel are gone.

Agree 100% - The whole title thing is now a complete joke
Absolute shambles.. love Steph but this is an absolute sham

One good day for someone and he is world champion..
After 1 terrible year !!
Disgusting

Carissa has an 11k points lead even after this contest and she’s not world champ? This format sucks!
agree
Garbage conditions. Indo and Cloudbreak were pumping today!
Congrats to Steph. Won it fair and square but this format is balls and the pro’s know it.
Crazy that the world championship is decided in just one final heat.

Steph should be embarrassed to take the title with an 11k point deficit compared to Riss.
Because when its all on the line it was Steph that was on top

I guess the entire season is about winning events for the money prize. As long as you finish top 5 you can still be champ in one day of 3 ft tressles.
Congratulations! What an amazing heat!

@@dhiquobgnaloo Hats off for Steff , she won surfing beating all others ahead of her with class. Wonder who came with that idea ,
that reverse was off the chain
Carissa is Kelly in Female Form imo, Power, Speed, Style, fun to watch 👀🏄🤙
Congrats to the GLOAT (Greatest Lady Of All Time)!!
Wow , these girls grew up so fast. Makes me feel so old🙈. Pleasure watching you girls duke it out 🤙🏽🤠

Steph triumphed in the 2022 inugural event in Central America.
I like the final 5 but they should change the location each year so it doesn’t suit a different type of surfer.
Agree, the format needs improvement. 2-4 should battle say trestle. Then the the number 1 against number 2 at number 1 choice break.
Congratulations!
Agree the system is crap. But it's the wsl. Crap in=crap out. But, Steph is still my favourite surfer to watch, with Parko a close second.
Fantastic surfing by Steph, but stupid format.. congratulations Steph, a great person and a great champion
I’m a Stephanie fan, but I do not like this format.
Congrats SG
Gilmore 😍😍
lets gooo steph
So you crush it all year, beating people in waves of consequence, and what decides the world champ is a wave a novice wouldn't hesitate to drop in on? Such a bogus format.

🌐🏆💦... Passion plus commitment to acheiving the win ... definitely surfed every wave to the maximum...with style and aggression...⭐🔥
whoever came up with this format deserves a raise. worst format ever
やはりローワーズの波ならステファニー姉さんのサーフィンのほうがフィットしましたね波に。
This whole FInal 5 system is a god damn joke. Carissa deserved that title more than any other female surfer in 2022 - ESPECIALLY Stephanie
New system is awful. Definitely won’t be watching much in the future.
Probably just pipe and tahiti.
On ya Happy
❤
Watched each match, Stephanie was just on another level than everyone else this year.
She barely made the cut, she happened to have a good day and won the event. As Gilmore herself said, Carissa was the best surfer throughout the entire year.
You must be high.
Did you watch on mute, with your eyes shut???
u oudda ur fuggin mind

'Sensational Steph' !!! congratulations... the best female surfer EVER.. !! now relax and go get NUMBER 9.. !! woohoo !

Maybe spend less time typing and more time watching the vids kook.
A transwoman won this year.
