At more than 200 Maryland public schools, 5 percent or fewer students scored proficient in Math

  • How much do parents really know about Maryland public schools? Project Baltimore has learned the latest round of state test scores does not tell the whole story about student outcomes.
Right now, if you go to the Maryland State Department of Education’s website, you can find the 2023 state test scores for every school in Maryland. The data was posted last week.
The website is where parents and taxpayers can go to see how public schools are performing. But if you take a closer look at the test scores, there’s a lot you can’t see. For instance, if you’re looking for information on the lowest-performing schools in Maryland, you won’t find it.

Frankly as a student I never tried on those tests because they were not factored into my actual grade. I would choose random answer to get it done quickly. I know for a fact many of my peers did the same.

THIS is why we homeschool - that and misplaced social engineering emphasis. This cannot be fixed throwing more money at it. The nation known as Ametica started with homeschool - dame schools etc. Then elite decided they needed to create an official school curriculum - one for the elite and one for factory workers etc. That required schools which taught the elite and one tgat promoted order, blueprint reading, and enough education to function. It was still better than whst we have today. Meantime places like California - once topped education now near the bottom. Dumbing down of USSA - NEARLY complete - never mind it is complete except for the homeschooled and certain high priced private schools. By the way prior to about 1968 or so schools in Harlem were as good as schools in the rest of NYC. THE rural South struggled whatever color the children were. Schools in places like Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa were top notch. Massachusetts and the upper Northeast also had good schools. The so called cultural revolt and war on poverty finished all that. Anyway - smart parents should give up on expecting anything from a bureaucratic nightmare called govt. Along with social engineering and WOKE - certain areas of US are finished no matter what kind of money they throw at schools.

      Woke only concerns history dummy
But when children can’t do calculus, algebra, or even read at grade level
This is beyond the grasp of money
In order to get your child to be the best you the parent have to put in some time as well as get tutors
These teachers are getting 22k -30k and hope to get tenured
      Don’t come here and play

So conservatives didn't like common core standards as a matter of principal (or something?), and now when they are used as a measurement of student learning that supports their arguments against adequate funding for public schools they think that common core is a reliable measurement? I'm a public school teacher. What I see happening on the ground is an over reliance on tech-based learning solutions over traditional, time-tested, teaching practice with paper, pencil, and book, with a focus on strong fundamental in early literacy and early math skills. Too many tech companies have convinced leadership and teachers that they have the easy software solution to address the needs of students who need a bit more help early on. Less technology in the classroom and better teacher training / recruitment are what I see working.

Are you seriously blaming the failures of the public school system on conservatives? Everything from the teachers unions to your State Department of Ed is all far left. You yourself Mr Teacher are also a good solid Democrat. Take a little personal responsibility.

@@user-ts7ns7bt2v No, I’m an experienced teacher who is working post pandemic, and I’ve seen the way students relate to screen time cognitively and behaviorally. Students learn better from direct instruction provided by human beings. Technology has a role to play for practicing discreet skills or generating content, but in the current state of things, teachers are over reliant on “blended learning” and I would say this terrible math data speaks for itself. We need to do something different. If I’m not mistaken, my generation (90s) performed better in math skills.

    • @SomeSchmidt

@@johnjriggsarchery2457 No, I'm not blaming conservatives. Maryland Democrats have proven just as inept at handling public education as Maryland Republicans. My blame is on ed-tech companies and ed-leadership for repeatedly trying to remedy problems with learning platforms and gimmicks rather than training teachers in what works and holding us to the expectation of actually teaching rather than putting kids on a computer to complete "lessons."
