i think its cool how so many people have different interpretatinos of this song. Some people think of it as a breakup song, others like me feel like its an anthem for hopeless romantics who live in our own heads because love is terrifying in real life
True! Like my interpretation is she is actually sitting in the car with this person (boyfriend, husband, whoever). And she’s remembering or imagining how things used to be and how he was and how he loved her. But then she snaps back to the present and that version of him isn’t real anymore.
It starts with staring at a ceiling, plaster... ends with you don't exist... In the middle, she can't remember the last time she was kissed... It's all in her lonely, longing heart and head
it’s always reminded me of falling in love desperately with a book character. “… but it’s not real, and you don’t exist, and I can’t recall the last time I was kissed. it hits me, in the car, and it feels like the end… of a movie i’ve seen, before”. 😢
I've said it before, but this song is absolutely tremendous. I think the production on the record is immaculate and so impressive, but the song stands up so well when it's just vocals and acoustic guitar. It's a masterpiece of a song.
This song was a cure for me during the hardest time of my life. Being in a position where you love someone who doesn't love you back and doesn't feel the same way, you start to believe things that happen in your dreams. You get so lost in those feelings that you start to miss the line between fantasy and reality- until it hits you. when you realize it's not real and the person you love so much is not really that person, you fell in love with a person that you mostly made up in your dreams and mind. It hurts the most when you realize that. To anyone who's reading this and facing the same problem- my only advice is that you try to bare it. There's nothing you can do. Things will get easier with time but I still don't feel "cured" from this feeling after all this time, but time moves on and so will you. You can do it. Good luck.
i sobbed and screamed to this song during my last breakup. it hurt but especially because it happened the week before we had planned to go to new york city together. the lyrics are just so beautiful and raw and real and hearing it acoustically is even more tearjerking. great work as always

‘Five seconds flat” is the album of the year, and this is one of my all time favorite songs. The emotion conveyed by Lizzy is something you feel in the core of your sole. Lizzy’s fans (of all ages) genuinely feel this emotion and have responded with much deserved adoration. She is destined for greatness. There are things that can be explained to others, and things that can’t. You either feel what she is singing about emotionally or you don’t. It can be hard for me not get emotional knowing that the songs are about real experiences she has lived through. I do hope Lizzy finds the “love of her life” soon. She deserves it.
to me this is like the hopeful start of a relationship when you're hoping the person will turn out to be the one you've been looking for and the "it's not real and you don't exist" part is the realization that they aren't the idealized version of themself that you want them to be. The person is there with you but the version of them that you wan't doesn't exist.
