Jay said it... when we were kids with the OG muscle cars, showroom stock 13's and 14's were impressive. Now, mom's minivan probably does 14's. Modern technology is amazing.
Tire technology was Horrible in the 60's/70's, even drag slicks back then weren't as sticky as Trofeo R or Michelin cup street tires of today. Other big difference is the transmissions/ gearing. Old cars with optional 4.10 gears only had a 10.045 1st gear multiplication with a 3 speed torqueflite transmission The Hellcat with 2.62 rear gearing has a massive 12.34:1 1st gear multiplication factor.Even worse was top speed/highway RPM for the old 1:1 transmissions. The Hellcat has a double Overdrive giving it a 1.7554 top gear vs. 4.10 for the old stuff.
@@viii8993 mostly limited models in very small production run muscle cars would run under 13s. You can look back at old hot rod road tests and just as one example a 396 SS Chevelle couldn't even break into the 14s. The average muscle car back then is nowhere near as fast as everyone seems to remember them. Modern technology has completely decimated anything from the 60s.
The SRT Challenger is a textbook case of doing everything right. They did not change the bodystyle when Mustang and Camaro changed theirs. Dodge hung tough, knowing their market exactly. The older guys are the largest chunk of the Challenger V8 market and Dodge knows this segment loves the current timeless look of the Challenger. When a design is done right, it stands the test of time and the Challenger with the tasteful front and rear updates of '15 hit it out of the park. Dodge is smart -- they know the older guys that grew up with the originals want the car to remain the same size and look, but more power and trim levels like the T/A, Scat Pack etc. With the 426 Hemi Challenger no doubt on the horizon, the biggest issue is which of these models to buy!
@Mr Calcium I applaud Ford and GM for continuously trying to evolve their look as well but yeah the new mustang isnt too pretty to say the least and the redesigned camaro is down right offensive to look at its so bad. Chrysler has the right idea. Dont reinvent the wheel, just try and find new ways to make em spin faster.
With the design yes. Why can't they make high quality interior you look at a charger challenger and it's classic Chrysler bolsters and seats look very worn after just a short time. Their Transmissions automatic shift very strangely but over all that they do make some very appealing products.!
I drove a base model R/T with the Hemi as a rental car and honestly, I was all smiles the whole time. Dodge, if you're listening, don't change anything. There aren't many new cars that I'm truly enamored with, but the Hellcat is just plain awesome.
I’m 16 and saved and worked and now proudly own a 2009 srt8 Challenger. One day I will own a Demon and I just love the feelings these car seem to create.
This body design is perfection :) ~10 years have passed since the launch and its still one of the best looking body designs out there. It looks aggressive yet clean still practical just like any daily cars, just pure sleeper of a car.
The car sucks though compared to other stuff on the market. And 2 if you can't drive away from the cops in an 800hp car then you should not have an 800hp car.
I think Chevy doesn't make the Camero as good as it could be because of the Corvette. Dodge has the Viper but pricewise it is no where near a Vette. The Corvette is a capable car and isn't made exclusively for maximum horsepower. What would be cool is for GM to make a new Chevelle and make it a rival to the Challenger.
These gentlemen are so delightful to watch. They seem to be extremely knowledgeable about these cars and know every tiny differentiating bit of each model.
HvyMetal4Ever the way mileage works is based on speed , your not producing 800hp when cruising... When you slam the throttle that's when you get high hp and low mpg
My '91 Cummins 6BT powered '78 lifted Bronco gets 25 mpg @55mph, makes 350+ hp and 700+ ft/lbs of torque. 0-60 less than 5 seconds.(video is on my page) Going to diesel feels like cheating, but I love it. lol Gas engines can perform too, but they need to be tuned specifically to make enough low end torque and utilize that torque with the proper gearing combined with an aerodynamic chassis.
Derek Reinmiller ehh yeah depends, Iv raced a couple of boosted 2v’s claiming they are up in the 450-500ish and either they lied or they suck at driving their cars, I own a 2016 GT but if I could have I would have bought a 2013 2014 love that body style
@@dnsbb8033 Not saying 2vs are fast because they definitely arent stock. I'm really talking more about just the looks. And that's not to say the S550s are ugly because they definitely arent. I just think they look more like a sports car than a muscle/pony car.
I have to agree with Jay that it is the great American road car. Through chance I ended up driving an R/T ~1200 miles in just about 24 hours. It was the most comfortable trip I can ever remember taking, including our family cars that are supposed to be "comfortable". Well done, Dodge!
I have an 09 R/T with the 6 speed and track pack ( 3.92 sure grip rear gears). I bought it brand new. I admit, that Dodge really has come a long way with the newer models. Interiors are MUCH nicer, more stylish, better fit and finish ( by far) and better materials ( by far) and the electronics actually work! ( my U-Connect died 3 yrs after I bought it) And they handle and brake WAY better than mine does. However, there is something to be said about the simplicity of mine, vs the new 1's with all of the gadgetry. To each his/her own, but that's not for me. I looked at a '17 Scat Pack 392 6 speed as an upgrade to mine, but all the fluff.. well for the $$$ I didn't buy it. And Jay's right. These are GT cars. Big, comfortable, powerful cruisers that you can actually use for extended trips ( which is 1 of the things I love about mine. I drove from my home to Oklahoma City which is 13 hrs, and recorded 27.5 mpg at 70, cruise on. on 92 premium no ethanol mix gas. That was with 2 full sized suitcases and a bunch of other luggage in the trunk.) The guest mentions sales at about 150k per yr. Interestingly, their sales were slow up until about '10 and Dodge nearly scrapped the project! Chargers were out selling Challengers 5 to 1! 300s 4 to 1. In fact, I found out my car, as optioned and painted, is less than 1 of 450 produced for 09! These are really special cars. I've driven the new Camaros. Can't see out of them. Trunk is pretty small, and the back seat is for children. I've driven the new Mustang and though more refined than ever, it felt small, and it was easy to lose control. These Challengers gotta be pushed pretty hard before you lose it. Very forgiving cars. If something were to happen to mine, I know I'll buy another 1. BUT you can keep the 8 speed, I prefer to row my own boat!
I still have my Bright red 09 R/T HEMI 6 speed manual. Every time I take "Rachael" for a drive, she still turn heads. You classic refit like mine, 08-14 will be collector items. Not these new body style. I'm 52. Hard core Mopar. But these Challengers were styled for young nonmopar generation. Only gear heads. That's just my opinion.
Adam Trombino due respect, but you should’ve bought that 17 SP 392 6M. It’s so much more enjoyable of a Muscle Car to drive over your 5.7 it’s not even funny.. hopefully you’ll buy one soon. It IS well worth the money

I hardly call it a golden age when the majority of people who want to buy these cars can't afford them. They are not selling well. The automotive industry in America is going to abandon the muscle car in the foreseeable future.
@@metanoia6335 I agree the price of these cars have become crazy. In my opinion not enough of them are produced to drive the price of them down to where the average Joe can afford them. In the 1960s and 1970s far more were produced taking the population numbers into account. If they were to produce the same amount of cars now taking in account for population growth they would be producing far more muscle cars then they are currently. The big problem is people buying cars from foreign owned car companies like Honda, Nissan,Toyota etc etc has really hurt our Domestic car sales. One of the biggest lies ever told was that foreign cars were better then American cars. That came about through awesome car advertising by foreign car companies that their cars were better and people believe it. All cars eventually break down no matter what they are or how much they cost.

I'll take a Bugatti, or a Koenigsegg , or a McLaren, or another Porsche.....yeah the Dodges have come a long way but in the end.....its still a Dodge, that's pretty much like buying a Ford GT for $500k, its neat, fast, cool, but in the end....its still a FORD. Dont get me wrong, it is admirable to see brands like Chevy, Ford, Dodge and even KIA (the Stinger, using a copy cat 2.9l V-6 which is bascally half a Ferrari V-12 (design wise)) but if you are shopping for something unique that will stand the test of time then you have to go with a boutique manufacture like Pagani, Koenigsegg, and the like OR go big with a time tested manufacture like Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Porsche, and so on, yes they COST MORE, BUT in the end, that really is part of the point, nuff said.....RIP Stan Lee

Jay is the best salesman for the hellcat that fiat/dodge ever had, I've never been a dodge guy even though I have had a couple dusters but this car is badass!!!
I'm so old, I remember the old commercial about the 1970 Plymouth Fury, where there was a man standing beside the left rear wheel, calmly telling all about their new awesome transmission with the guy driving the car standing on the gas pedal, shifting from Drive to Reverse in quick succession. The car stands still while the wheels spin in one direction, then the other about once a second. Cool commercial, it was.
Well done Jay, I do love this video. What a WICKED car, and that supercharger whine is so addictive. I am going to be 66 in a few weeks and I still love the sound of a V8 especially a supercharged V8. The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye is just a beast on steroids.
I worked for a Dodge/Chrysler dealership in the late 60's as a mechanic trainee when the six pack, Daytona and Superbird came out, but I also remember a Hemi Valiant (I think it was) that had fixed plexiglass rear windows, no back seat just a big flat upholstered cover for the back of the back seat. It also had little tires and small round hubcaps. I think it was not legal to drive on the street as best as I remember, I will never forget that car. I think it had a cross-ram manifold with two four barrel carbs. (AFB's I think?). I remember thinking how ugly the Superbird was and so was the Daytona, neither one of them sold at all... This was about 50 years ago so I may have some of the details wrong...
It was not a barracuda, maybe it was a Dart? It was a small bodied car, I sat in it and looked it over completely I just don't remember exactly what it was. (it was white or light in color, tiny hub caps)@@4thstooge75

Love my Hellcat Challenger ! I will say Jay always underestimates old cars...Sure with factory bias ply 185 / 70 series 14 inch tires they had (yes 185) Wide Tread tires were 205 60 series yes 205 ! No track prep like today etc...Hemi and 440 cars ran high 12's to high 13's and yes slower with worse drivers...But add a better driver, wider tires and they run in the 11's to low 12's for a 440 ! Back in the day 426 Hemi cars ran in the 11's with slicks that were 8 to 10 inches wide that had traction like a modern radial..440 4bbl cars ran low 12's..A magazine tested a 440 Cuda it ran 14's spinning down the track, they added so called slicks of the day it ran low 12's.. My Dad owns and bought new a 70 440 6bbl Cuda that ran high 11's 2 weeks after he bought it,all he did was play with the carbs and add headers..440 6bbl,727 auto and 3.54 dana 60...1 week old it ran 12.90 1st run byt the 3rd he ran 12.30's...My 68 Charger RT 440 Magnum, stock ran 12.80's bone stock ! 383 cars were solid 13 second 1/4 mile cars..Heck my low compression stock 400 high performance 74 Satellite ran 13.90's ,car was low miles(odometers only went to 99,999 then back again this one had 80,500 miles) Buddy had a 1974 Challenger with a 360 4barrel all factory he also ran 13.98 from a 360 !! auto and 8 3/4 inch 3.55 gear ! Remember most drove old cars that were shot, out of tune and or rebuilt and most had clowns rebuilding them and they ran slower than factory..Case in point my buddy had a 383 2barrel,2.76 axle, single exhaust 1968 Chrysler Newport that ran 14.80's to 15 flat all the time, how ? It hooked,no spinning !!! My other buddy bought a 69 Road Runner 383 high performance 4bbl that ran on 6 of the 8 cyl,the Newport beat it..the Road Runner sounded good but burned a little oil and sounded like it had a slight exhaust leak..The Road Runenr guy thought the engine was sound when he bought it.He owned a 1965 Chevelle with a 282 and the 383 that ran on 6 cyl felt like a powerhouse and he thought it was fine..He even ran 15.80's at the track with the 2 cyl at 70 psi compression the others below 125 lol...He then paid for a rebuild and big cam and still it was slower than the Newport lol, this buddy lived 4 hours away and well, next time my other buddy tore the engine down fixed the issues too low of compression for huge cam and heads not matched to the cam spec etc...After the fix it ran low 12's for a 3/4 cam in his 383..mild rebuild ran on regular gas too with a set of 2.94 axle ratio as he drove the highway lots ,so the car could run 11's if desired !!!

Erik Hertzer if you liked the rental version, wait until you drive a Hemi V8 or a 392 Scat.
The seats are nice.
I love how honest and genuine this bloke is. He’s letting the car sell itself.
I love that Jay is doing shows about what he loves best...cars. Such a great personality, much love.
Google says a new Odyssey is 15.4 1/4 mile.
benjamin reynolds
Haha that’s awesome!! 👍
Modern technology has completely decimated anything from the 60s.
minterfab Has.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The designers of this beautiful car were spot on from the start. Many of them, no doubt, own Challengers themseves.
@@CatNerfer3000 The big power these cars make is also what sets them apart in the market.
Older guys! I’m only 36 lol

There aren't many new cars that I'm truly enamored with, but the Hellcat is just plain awesome.

i could not have this car. My license would be gone in a day....

The car sucks though compared to other stuff on the market. And 2 if you can't drive away from the cops in an 800hp car then you should not have an 800hp car.

Mopar is great until you have to actually go around a curve
I think Chevy doesn't make the Camero as good as it could be because of the Corvette. Dodge has the Viper but pricewise it is no where near a Vette. The Corvette is a capable car and isn't made exclusively for maximum horsepower. What would be cool is for GM to make a new Chevelle and make it a rival to the Challenger.

HvyMetal4Ever the way mileage works is based on speed , your not producing 800hp when cruising... When you slam the throttle that's when you get high hp and low mpg
lol, technology came a long way!

I have to agree with Jay that it is the great American road car. Through chance I ended up driving an R/T ~1200 miles in just about 24 hours. It was the most comfortable trip I can ever remember taking, including our family cars that are supposed to be "comfortable". Well done, Dodge!

Jay said that to let him know he knows about the 1000 hp engine.
Jay knows and I am sure he is on the list of pre-orders...
Steed Blackman Sorry, but the only ones that will ever be a “collectors item” will be the 2008 Challenger SRT8, the 2015 Hellcat, & the 2018 Demon.. no R/T 5.7 will be a collectors item.

And it has lasted way longer than the first golden age did.
I hardly call it a golden age when the majority of people who want to buy these cars can't afford them. They are not selling well. The automotive industry in America is going to abandon the muscle car in the foreseeable future.
I have a 2012 Chrysler 392 6.4l and i love it i daily drive it everyday . I don't see muscle cars going away anytime soon

I don’t know why, but this video just brings a big smile to my face. Good ole American muscle! And I’m a MKIV Supra owner, lol. Congrats to Dodge and this gentleman for making such badass cars.
I’m speaking it into existence. I’m getting one of these. Honestly, I just want an SRT Challenger, but I’m getting my hands on one of these beasts.
Any luck?? Did you get it
@@johnnyinthehellcat4092 I actually went to the dealership to look at a Challenger last year but ended up getting a Ram truck
Jay never pays attention to the guests he asked about the air intake when the guest had explained already 🤓
😂😂😂
He’s so gone
I like the way Dodge has kept this old chassis relevant. The wide body twin scoops looks fantastic.
