Flooded canal at Worcester - 4 weeks later...

  • Wednesday January 31st 2024:
    After my visit on January 4th, when the River Severn had overflowed and completely covered the Bottom Lock of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal, I went back to Worcester today, to see how things are looking.
    Expecting to see some flood-water remaining, and the lock to perhaps be out of order, I was quite surprised by what I found.
    As usual for Worcester, I came across loads of swans - including the largest I've ever seen! 😊
    It was a worthwhile trip and Worcester is a great city with loads to see. That said, you may feel I've done the place too many times now! So I will leave it alone for a while. One day though, I will return, to take a look inside the beautiful and majestic Cathedral - in this video you'll get a splendid view of it, as seen from the cricket ground.
    Hope you'll enjoy the video!
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff, again enjoyed your views of Worcester canal and what a difference since your last visit. Certainly some of the locks will need a bit of maintenance. It would be nice to have one of those flats with a balcony at Diglis marina 👍

      @Gladysthenarrowboat  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Ian! 😊 Yeah, with hindsight, I'd have gone back after say, 2 weeks, not 4. But yes, those lock gates look like they need some TLC. Oh, so right - some of those flats, and the terraced houses further up, have a fabulous view. Rather expensive to buy I should imagine! I'm enjoying myself outside, finishing off the latest Holzhausen this morning. BTW, the comments on my posting-page seem to have disappeared overnight... I think it's a temporary glitch - which has happened before to me - so they will hopefully reappear soon. Thanks as always for your kind words and support! 👍

    Looks like a vast improvement in flood levels since your last visit to the locks. That’s a good thing though a bit of restoration work might be needed!

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah you're right Angela - they do replace lock gates every so often anyway, but as you can imagine, it's an expensive business and each is made to order. I will go back there at some point (maybe even with Gladys), and it'll be interesting to see what the CRT does about the damage. 👍

    What a change in water level. We will be honing to Worcester soon and will have a look at the cannels and river then. Your Tourism job must pay you well 😂

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes, quite astonishing when you think about it - although I know it was very bad in other places on the Severn too.
      Oh yes Gerald, the Tourism Board has asked me to 'name my price' - no doubt about it, that this time next year, I'll be a millionaire! 🤣

    It does make you wonder how so much water can disappear but thankfully it does!

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, the sheer volume of water must be enormous when the river is full, like it was. And it's constantly being replaced with more from upstream - I wonder if anyone calculates how many litres/gallons/cubic metres will have 'disappeared' since the flood!

    I’m sure the council are casting a key to the town just for you. Either that or there’s a bag of wildfowl food with your name waiting to be collected.

      That's an interesting choice DC. I think I'd probably go for the bird food... there's sometimes such a queue in Greggs that I give up and walk away in despair... but a packet of seeds in my pocket might just save the day! 😊

    Hi Jeff. Another interesting video and what a difference from 4 weeks ago. When you look back to when it was flooded it's hard to appreciate the actual volume of water coverage there was, the power of nature can be quite scary. You should do a Brompton visit later in the year and take advantage of the cycle paths and definitely do a vlog about the Cathedral. Actually I was bowled over looking at the view of the Cathedral over the cricket ground 😂...please forgive me for my terrible joke there. Sounded like Joanna Lumley announcing you approaching Worcester Foregate Street. I hear she's now a fan of yours since the BBC approached you and she specifically requested to be on your train. See you in the next video Jeff 👍👍👍

      Hi Dave - thanks very much for your comment - as usual!
      Yeah - its a shame we cant harness all that river water into hydro-electricity. I'd love to do a Brompton-special on Worcester... I'm just wary that viewers may feel I'm monopolising the place!
      Love the joke about being 'bowled over'! 😁 The cathedral sure is impressive and I will go there, for sure. I'll keep it on the back burner for now - in case I'm 'stumped' (ouch) for somewhere new to video... 👍
      You're right - it does sound like Joanna Lumley... I guess I'll have to get used to this kind of adulation - Sir David did say he'd pull some powerful strings to get me to change my mind!
      I'll be catching trains to Liverpool next Monday Dave - going up to visit Gladys, which I'm looking forward to a lot. But next Saturday's video will once again be set on a canal - but no train-ride required this time! 😊

    Visited Diglis marina today. Severn well up, and flowing over the lock gates at Diglis Island. Riverside walk from city bridge to Diglis completely under water.

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow - flowing over the gates at the island? It's just amazing how so much water can appear - and so regularly. And such a shame we can't figure a way of storing it for when we need it! 😊

      @Gladysthenarrowboat Indeed! I crossed the modern Diglis Bridge but couldn't return up the cricket ground bank as it was under very brown water! Enjoyed your videos!

      Thanks Andrew - glad you enjoyed them! Oh yeah you're right, the flood water looks awful don't it?! Even if we could store it, I guess it'd need some hefty filtration to be useable!

      @@Gladysthenarrowboat from the old English snod meaning 'hair ribbon' (I looked it up. I didn't know it)

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah, that explains it. Thanks John👏 . My guess would have been it was probably a foreign word.

    • @dcvariousvids8082
      @dcvariousvids8082 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I always understood a snood, to be a net or bag, attached to back of a hat or cap. Which gathers together long hair, which protects the wearer from having their hair becoming entangled in say machinery. I used to wear a snood-cap when working on lathes and milling machines.
      As to the thing around the neck. If it’s a tube-like scarf, I’ve only heard of them as a buff. But perhaps in different parts of the country, the same pieces of apparel are known by different names.

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah, a difference of opinion here then! Thanks DC for pointing this out. So, yes, according to Wikipedia you are absolutely right, and it also mentions a 'Beard Snood' - which, as the name suggests, is worn to keep a beard out of the way, such as when preparing food. I've seen guys wearing these in food-shops.
      However, John is also perfectly correct when saying the tubular scarf I wear is known as a snood - because if you consult the all-powerful super computer known as Amazon, with the word 'snood', you are presented with a plethora of tubular scarves to choose from, and they are often referred to as being a snood.
      Wikipedia hasn't got a reference to 'buff' as being a form of neckwear - not yet at least -you may want to correct / add to that?! It does have an interesting use for the term 'BUFF' though, with regards to the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress aircraft...
