Out of control narrowboat drifts down River Severn

  • THESE are the dramatic moments an out of control narrowboat drifted towards Worcester's bridges in rising flood water. The unmanned boat, called “Expensive Hobby”, was seen spinning in the fast flowing waters of the Severn on a collision course for city bridges. But disaster was averted thanks to the quick and courageous actions of specialist boat crews from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service. At one point the vessel drifted perilously close to the central pillar of the railway bridge as firefighters were locked in a dynamic race against time to secure the vessel before it was dashed to pieces in the swirling waters.

I am impressed on how the boat was Secured to the deck, but not so much on how the deck was secured to the shore.

Technically it hadent broke mooring as it had its own portable spot .I guess the half pissed hungover guy inside couldn't see what all the fuss was about .Portable moorings is the future .Just go to any farmer and he will probably sell you those used 50 gallon chemical drums for 5 quid each and some old odds and end timber and some long fencing stakes you can knock in to the mud he probably has lying about and baler twine to lash it all together for another 50 quid and walla you have your own moorings and personal garden to park in a nice reedy hidden spot just don't forget the astro turf and plastic flowers garden shed and rotory clothes line .lol

      Not gonna' ague with ya.
But, if this had turned out as many do, with the vessel taking on excessive water, and with engine oil, fuel, or other contaminants leaking into the waterway, there would certainly be a bill for fines related to environmental damages. Hopefully, the vessel would be insured, but ultimately the boat owner is responsible for environmental impact.
Further, if damage was sustained by other vessels, or property, such as a dock which was struck by the loosed vessel, the boat owner might be greeted by additional "bills" in his/her mailbox also.

yup, those floating platforms are generally held in place with vertical support columns, if the water was to be unusually high, there is nothing to stop the pontoon from being higher than the top of the column and just floating off... that water level must be seriously high compared to the usual level to do that though.
