Nicole, I have been able to use those words marked as misspelled. All you have to do is click on the “mark all keywords as correct”. That overrides the spelling flag and allies you to submit those keywords.
If shutterstock thinks one of your keywords is not a word, you can click on the highlighted keyword and scroll down on the pop up to "this is correct" and it will then accept that keyword
I cannot comment when I watch your videos on my TV, but I just started Shutterstock- input my first submissions today- and I was very disheartened to learn that the minimum size is 4.0 MB, so that really limited what I could submit, and tells me that going forward, I must really pay better attention to the shots I take, as cropping decreases my overall file size. Anyway, I found that the Microstock keywording tool has been the bomb for me. I want to thank you for posting your videos :-)
Hey Lisa, I'm glad you like the videos! Yes there are definitely some technical requirements that you have to pay attention to. All the best on your stock journey!
We have just discovered the free software Xpiks, which not only allow us to upload the photos and videos to multiple microstock agencies, but also it has a very nice keywords suggestions tool that you can use to input them in the photo (it uses the basefata of Shutterstock or Adobestock, you choose!). Totallly recommended! Thank you so much for the video :) Really helpful
More great tips, thank you! I can never hit 50 keywords. I think the most I’ve ever added was around 35. Other than the Shutterstock keyword tool I’ve use the product website when applicable. The tips you suggested should allow me to hit the 50 keyword max. I just started using Lightroom so it’s less tedious posting to other stock platforms. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge!
Hey Jerry, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah, it can be tough to hit 50. When I look back at the first photos I ever uploaded to Shutterstock, it's insane how few keywords I used.
Thank you Nicole for yet another enlightening and useful video. IMHO it’s worth taking the time to perform the tedious task of building a keyword hierarchy in Lightroom and keeping it up to date. I bought a rather large well-organized one and have been adding to it ever since. I use Shutterstock’s keyword suggestion tool because it often comes up with keywords I’ve missed, but then I update my Lightroom keywords for that image as well my Lightroom keyword list so that the next time I get a similar photo the missed keywords will be added to it. It’s definitely a tedious and boring part of the process, but it pays dividends down the line.
Thanks Nicole, I learning a lot from your videos about being a Shutterstock contributor. Learning the hard way yesterday about brand name in meta data description which is a no no. Guess it is best not to mention Canon or Sony in description.
How do you handle the various versions of a keyword? Singular, pleural, other variations. Do you include them all? And how do you handle key two or three word phrases? Do you put them in as individual words?
Tim Argentum You can also click on an individual keyword and select the “mark as Correct” option. Marking all keywords as correct might end up marking a mis-spelled word as correct, so I would be careful using that option.
Descriptions are important. I tend to focus too much on the history of the place, but I’ve noticed that it’s not always that helpful for when people are searching for a particular photo. Can you go into how to write up a good description? Thanks!
Haha, I use the same techniques. I think of all the possible keywords I can, then I visit Wikipedia. If that doesn't work then to Shutterstock for more ideas with the similar subject. I always include scientific names of insects, usually both in keywords and the description. I did get a Shutterstock rejection last week with "keywords/description must be in English" when describing an insect macro. I resubmitted it and got a smarter moderator who approved it. :) Oh, and I know people have said it, but you can add whatever gibberish, nonsensical keywords you wish. Just scroll down the suggestions and select "mark as correct".
Shutterstock used to list the keywords used to find my downloaded images. I can see the keywords on my top performers list. I haven gotten that information for months now. Do you know why they stopped giving us that information? Do you still receive this?
Great info, the only other thing I would say is if you are batch editing for submission (especially in Shutterstock) only submit 49. Im not sure how or why it happens but if you submit exactly 50 you always end up with 51 and your submission will fail then you have to try and find which one has the 51. It's only a suggestion as it works for me and saves time. ;-)
Hi Nicole, Thanks for this very informative video. Can you take elements from different photos found on free stock sites like 'Unsplash' etc and combine them into a composite image of a concept in Photoshop and sell them commercially on Shutterstock ? Thanks for your help.
I usualy add as much keywords I can think of then I add all the keywords from Shutterstock keyword tool and if there is to many keywords I go through them and remove some. That's my work flow.
Thanks for the great tips! :D I have some questions.... 1. Do you have experience with invalid keywords? I took a picture of teenis court and another picture of brandy and I wrote keywords like tennis, tennis court, alcohol, alcoholic beverage... and Shutterstock imidiately removed them as invalid. That happens to me with some other keywords as well and I don't see what would be the reason. I'm confused about this. 2. Does it matter if I put one keyword "tennis court in Croatia" or seperate keywords "tennis court" and "Croatia". How that affects the search? Should I include all of them (tennis court, Croatia, tennis court in Croatia) or the most specific one is enough (tennis court in Croatia)? 3. Is it possible to edit keywords after the photo is uploaded? How?
How do you see what keywords were used to find your photos that sold on Shutterstock? I recall you mentioning that in one of your videos, but can not relocate that now. Thanks.
hi nicole, i was wondering how you write metadata to your stockfootage? is that possible? i tried using xpiks but it doesnt work on video. copying and pasting keywords for each agency is really time consuming -.-
The trouble with Lightroom is that it alphabetically stores the keywords which is picked up by shutterstock who require you to arrange them in a non alphabetical way I think they say alphabetical order detected which is a bit of a pain so I use Lightroom to write the caption and title but use another program to do the key working which I later copy into Lightroom for my own reference purposes
I tried hard to upload by it but it didn't work well for me. Uploads are being stuck for some reason. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Anyway, returned to filezilla till income will be enough to pay for stocksubmitter. Also keeping in mind uploading videos only to BlackBox, but still not sure.
Me, sitting and getting head boiled with keywording.. and all of sudden Nicole's 'how to find keyword ideas' note pops up. Time couldn't be more perfect. Cool. Let's see =)
In the last month or so, Has anyone else had issues getting photos rejected due to keywords on Shutterstock? Have they got a lot stricter lately? I understand keywords should relate to the subject matter, but I've had some photos rejected due to keywords that in the past would have been approved.
Unfortunately I can only hit the LIKE button once. This video is a 4 LIKES out of 4. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Have a great week. 😊
What about a series of 20 or more photos from an event? Do I have to caption and keyword each individual image, or is there a way to do this as a batch?
Question - At one point in the video you showed a misspelling of a keyword and said that that could not be a keyword on shutterstock so place it into the description instead. I am wondering - is this always 100% true? What I mean is this - what if you just use the feature on shutterstock that allows you to enter it anyways, telling shutterstock "yes. it's correct, use it!". Does this in turn end up "unsearchable" because it was not a pre-exisiting spelling or keyword and still isn't, or does it now make it a searchable keyword because you've entered it as a "new" one? I thought I tested that theory and found that it does work...I guess, yes, you're creating a (probably) seldom-to-never used keyword since it didn't register as correct, but if it is creating it as a searchable keyword it may definitely fit the definition of "niche", if that makes sense?
Ah I still have about 150 photos on Shutterstock and Alamy without keywords, I just can't do it sober hahah. Thanks for these tips, most of my Alamy shots barely go over half of the limit.
