This is my translation from russian of my article
"Odissi is one of the 8 schools of the Indian classic dance. According to Rahul Acharya, press-secretary of this group and dancer with 23-years standing, the Odissi dance have the Vedic roots. As early as in 1st century B.C., Muni Bharata in his treatise «Natya Shastra » described the whole “grammar” of this dance. It is the most ancient treatise about the dance in the world.

Long ago, Odissi was performed only by the young girls in the temples of Lord Shiva and of Lord Jagannath and represented the accomplishing of the whole cosmic cycle. The girls were chosen very young - from 5 years old - according to some criteria: they should be from the high casts and shouldn’t have any marks on the body. They became maharis - Great Ladies - and they must stay virgin all their life devoting them-selves to God as if they became the wives of Lord Jagannath.

Interesting! From where did you know this? I'm just asking because I'm from Odisha and never heard about it.

Farida Sharifulilna You are confusing the Mahari dance with Odissi. Mahari was danced by the Devadasis and is one of the sources of Odissi and Gotipua. Everything else is right!

it's all there in our 11th textbook and also internet... n just coz you are from odisha doesn't mean you have to know everything related to it... it's a big state

odissi has evolved out of mahari and gotipua not vice versa

Debaprasada Das style of Odissi if significant and very Natya dharmi yet Tandava and Lasya mayi.. Kelucharan ji's style is paceful not very tandav dharmi..Steps are very intricate and graceful... music is much more graceful in Kelu ji's style... Adi guru Pankaj ji's style is the oldest and just like the Mahari dance and simple yet very graceful.. Bhava is more in their style.. a bit simpler form of odissi ❤

By a woman, is divine, by a male, monstrously ugly.

Ridiculous, this is the most masculine, sensual, beautiful thing I have ever seen. you gotta revaluate your values Mr.

Do you actually know anything about this dance form, or Indian dance in general? For example, did you know that without the practices of the male gurus and male gotipua dancers, whose movement vocabulary forms the majority of modern Odissi, this dance wouldn't even exist in its current form?
Thank god we didn't have ignoramuses at the courts and temples of India, or none of the fantastic contributions of male dancers to Indian art and culture would have survived.

Actually right ... Odissi is the most feminine looking classical dance form of all . it is because of the 'lasya' attached to it . the feminine 'tribhangi' posture is more heavy on the masculine 'chauka'.
But I disagree that his dancing was feminine .. It also has a masculine element but with a different tone . masculinity comes in different colours .
