    When I kid, my parent's owned a small popup trailer. While I rembember,tthe great scenery we saw, my sister does not. She remembers the few times we set up at night, flat tires, etc. As we approach retirement age she will be happy retiring to Florida. I on the other hand want to travel.

      That's a terrific perspective, Tom! It shows how easy it can be to ruin the experience for family members through a series of poor decisions.

    Mark, we watched every episode of your show last year with great anticipation. I retired December 16 and we picked up our airstream on January 8th. We’ve marked many of your camping sites and were making plans to visit them soon. All your advice here is incredibly helpful and important. One thing for us about the cooking is, cooking is a big part of the fun we have at the camp site. Thank you mark! Maybe we’ll meet you sometime on the road.

      Thank you so very much for your dedication, Aaron, and congratulations on that new Airstream! They're positively beautiful. That's great camping advice for those who love to cook. I'll occasionally get the bug (for me it's like doing a chemistry lab) but Mrs GA actually enjoys it, so I'll confess that my usual dinner preparation is asking her, "What are we doing for dinner?" 😁

    Great advice. Yes, don't be in a hurry. I'm amazed at how many RVers fly by on the highways. I try to stay at 65 MPH or under. It makes the trip more enjoyable. Since we are still weekenders and have bought into a campground in western Ohio, we pack some food at home prior to leaving. But, we love going to local butchers for our meat. So once we unhook, we make a quick trip in town and pick up what we want. It's fresh and we are supporting local businesses along with visiting local craft breweries. So much fun. Thanks Marc for another great video. Safe travels.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great points, Rick! We love patronizing local businesses, but local butchers seem to be a dying breed these days. You're lucky to have that available.
      As for 65 mph, I'll be the first to admit that I'm probably one of those RVers flying by you on the highways. Guilty as charged.

    Before departing while towing I do a walk around of entire rig. When I get ready to drive, I make a mental note that I'm towing something so I watch my turns and clearances.

    VERY good advice. I am able to cover more miles, since I’m not towing my house, but I still try to get to my spot at least 3 hours before darkness (which comes 30 min after sunset). I’m a fan of the trucker apps for planning fuels stops every 600 miles. But, as a dedicated daydreamer, I’ve pulled into gas stations in no man’s land with “0 miles” range left. Thinking about walking 20 miles to Tucumcari, in the dark, is not a great feeling.

    Oh yeah, we've all been down miserable highway. Good tips for the upcoming peak road trip season. As I've gotten older I'm driving fewer miles per day and on my recent trip to the Smokies only spent 50 miles (of a 400 mile drive) on an interstate and the rest of my miles were federal (uncontrolled access) and state highways. Made for a much more pleasant trip and didn't add that much additional time.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exactly, John. Much more interesting driving, far less monotonous without adding much time to the route.

    • @techguy9023

      It’s great till you come to a low bridge with no way to turn around. Made it through but a cop pulled me over. The only place to stop was blocking the road. He really wanted to give a ticket but I think he 0:06 decided it wasn’t worth holding up any more traffic. I like camping. It’s the days of driving that get old. A gps that avoids low bridges would be nice. Google maps is no longer my friend.

    Great video Marc,
    Those are all great tips. We traveled with a full 6 gallon gas can in the back of the truck for emergencies, and we had to use it once in Texas.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The funny thing is, JT, we had 10 extra gallons of gas in the bed of the truck (that was with the Tundra). That extra gas is the only way we made it to that gas station in West Texas, even without the trailer.

  • @scotty92028
    @scotty92028 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Here’s a good one. When you pull into a fuel station with your rig make sure you have canopy clearance. Just yesterday I pulled into the ARCO station in Beatty,NV. My fifth wheel’s front AC cover scraped the ceiling of the canopy. I wasn’t to concerned as the covered was on its last legs and I would tape it up with eternabond tape which I did to keep rolling. However, the staff in the mini-mart came screaming out like I did major structural damage. Come to find out the damage was done previously and is due to repaired soon. There’s more to the story, but I’ll just leave it here.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep! Ditto for pulling the trailer into car washes. I've found numerous occasions when height clearance is inaccurately marked. Glad to hear that's the extent of what happened in Beatty. One of my best wild burro encounters was in Beatty, where they come down out of the hills at sunset to hang outside the door of the Family Dollar begging for oatmeal cookie handouts.

    Smart move to give New York a wide berth.
    We both drive, not exactly the full of threes, but we drive two hours, switch drivers, drive two more hours, switch, drive one hour, switch and drive one more hour. This is what we aim for and we usually arrive early enough and not wore out. We so one nighters usually the first night and the last night. Waiting for my solar panels to arrive, more actually 390 watts were not enough. The 690 watts when installed may not be enough also as the 460ah battery is a monster. Still can’t figure out L2 line for the other plugs and may not be possible without a complete rewire of my Fantastic KZ 382MBQ. Will be watching and see you on the road.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Bob! I honestly doubt that 690W will be enough for 460Ah of battery. We're even a bit unbalanced ourselves with 1200W of panels for 600Ah of battery.
      You need to have a split phase inverter to handle both legs of 50A to the service panel. It's not an issue of wiring, it's an issue with the inverter's capability. If your inverter is single phase (and IIRC you have a Xantrex, and all Xantrex units are single phase) you can only provide inverted power to one leg of your electrical load. To power both legs you would have two options:
      1. A second inverter for L2, or
      2. A single split-phase inverter, like the Victron MultiPlus-II.

    • @robertnasser9937

      @@GrandAdventure yes the cloudy days at the rally really hampered the boondock test, thankfully the generator fills the gap. When the 3000w Zantrex gives up the ghost, same as you a Victron multi plus 2 is on the list. All of my other electronics are now Victron, battery monitor, solar controller, Cerbo gx with screen are in place.

    I would like you to talk about pulling through Salt Lake. We live in Idaho Falls and anything south generally involves going through Salt Lake which I find very stressful.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We can certainly understand that, and you're right -- there's no really good alternative if you're southbound from Idaho Falls, although you can avoid some of the worst congestion of the Wasatch Front by taking the Legacy Parkway in Davis County, and the Mountain View Corridor in Salt Lake County. I-15 perhaps bothers us less because we're overly familiar with the area, having lived here for 20 years, but we've heard from many, many RV travelers who remain apprehensive about traveling through the area on I-15.

    • @ahuman1058
      @ahuman1058 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for your thoughts. We have used the Legacy a lot. Back in time you were out of the traffic once you cleared Provo, but now it is Nephi and in truth is bad all the way to Las Vegas. We really enjoy your videos and watch every one.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ahuman1058 thank you! It's so true, ever since we first moved to Utah in January 2005 it's gotten much, much busier around here, and the areas of congestion have expanded greatly. The influx of people has driven the cost of living through the roof, too. But we still love it here, and return every winter for ski season even as full-timers. Thank you as well for your dedication to the channel!

    Thank our Marc. Food prep and planning are our big ours. We love to use our cast iron Dutch oven for outdoor cooking and keep our camper cool. We are from Florida and camp in the state forest campgrounds (no hookups). What are some tricks of the trade you use (besides AC) that you use to stay cool? Are any of these new battery operated AC units any good or are they just a scam?

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ed, we have one of the Zero Breeze units on board th-cam.com/video/A1XPnDazSok/w-d-xo.html and it truly does work very well in confined spaces. We made use of it when temps hit triple digits for us barely outside of Glacier National Park in NW Montana th-cam.com/video/I-XQV-R-DXI/w-d-xo.html . But generally speaking, if it gets that hot where we're boondocking, we screwed up in selecting a site. In the West, where we typically boondock, our best defense against the heat is choosing the right elevation. In the east, boondocking opportunities are so few and far between that we typically opt for an electrified campsite.
