I had a planex, first generation. The light is a great addition. The swirls I had were from small rocks in the plaster under the mud I was applying. Also everything went a lot better once I added one more coat and upped a grit or two.
You are an excellent teacher. I installed a new tub and surround in a bath we gutted 20 years ago. That was my first foray into drywall. I watched a TON of your vids before tackling it again. The proof is in the painted wall/ceilings! Even where I know the seams are I really can't tell. Thanks!

I use 240 grit, and then before I use a new pad, I’ll always sand the new pad with the old one I’m replacing so as to take the grit away a little more. Also I find if you adjust the Vac suction just right it helps to give a nice smooth sand. I’ll usually have the suction on the vac itself all the way up, and then have the dial(or whatever) on the sander around 4 or 5(out of 6 settings). also you want to fire up your sander away from the wall/ceiling and when to go to put your sander on the mudd, make sure you put it on flat(so as to not gouge) and ALWAYS be moving. Coming to a dead stop or starting while not moving will be a disaster.

That'll really make your drywall jobs go well and keep you safer with alot less drywall dust. You said that you worked with a painter that had one to clean off random paint drips and roller strokes before new paint? Lucky you. Moved into a house where the last owners didn't understand or cared about leveling paint. Lots of DEEP brush marks and drips that a sander couldn't smooth out without my sandpaper getting totally loaded. It was easier to skim coat over the walls. I was pretty good for my first try. Well, ordinarily when you sand you get dust all over, nit in this case. Festool is a premium brand, made in Germany and I tell you, when that vacuum is attached to that top of the line sander, you can stick your tongue out, spread your eyes wide open and not a speck of dust will come out. I kbow because I own a few of their tools including that super dust collector
I bought a cheap worx sander off Amazon and it was a lifesaver! Granted I just got it to do my own basement and wouldn’t recommend to any professional but it sure paid for itself.
In Norway (and probably elsewhere as well) we call these things giraffe sanders. I dont know if its from the product name of the Flex sander that just stuck, or if its because of the way they work. Anywho. Im renovating a home from the 50s that i got. And a giraffe is a must for anyone who is going to diy a whole house. I save so much time and hassle. There is a learning curve to it, but not any more than for someone starting out sanding by hand. I would probably say i can get better results with the giraffe than with a manual pad. I only have a cheapo 100-dollar giraffe. But it works the same as the one in the video, and there is no more dust in the air, and i save alot of time cleaning up as well. No comparison tho to the festool, flex or any other pro tools intended. Those are tools made for years of use and abuse by pros.
Yes, most europeans use it. I recently started watching constructions videos from the US and i was really surprised to see they sand the skim coats entirely by hand. Even in Romania, everybody uses the giraffe - yes, we also call it like that. We only sand by hand window frames, tight spaces and joints/corners. Those need extra attention to detail ✌
The one main thing that stands out is that Festool extractors are simply the best you can buy, you were in that small space, no mask, sanding a not a spec of dust to be seen!! Thats why I love my Festool extractor, you get what you pay for IMO
I bought a cheap version of the sander a couple of years ago for doing my home best 100 euro I ever spent but I broke 2 hoovers using it 😂 my wife was not impressed, I found 320 disc on about 4 setting and keep it moving also if u hand sand the corners first with a square sanding block to get ur level and a nice corner then machine sand second will finish it nice and hoover any dust hanging on the wall , love the vids keep them coming 👏👏👏👏👏
Been looking for my first Festool tool. This one's 1800$ CAD and the dust extractor another $1100. I was breathing in a lot of dust when sanding ceilings or walls, even with a full face respirator. and the amount of time and poor posture pain this tool must save you from when sanding ceilings and high areas seems very worthwhile.
Tried reading all the comments to see if someone said it or not, but got lazy; the swirling may be as simple as turning down the vac a little, or if it is like the last generation, adjusting from the two dust extraction modes on the head. It had one for holding to the ceiling and another for the rest of your sanding. The hold to the ceiling mode puts a bit too much pressure on it all, which leads to swirls. Same really goes for sanding anything with dust extraction-if it is getting swirl marks, especially on finer grits, turn down the dust extraction power until they go away.
I think you have to start it with already on the surface. With the sanders they say you need to have the sander on the surface before starting. And then you lift it off the surface and then turn it off.
I do paint and body work and those orbital swirlies are called pigtails and they are usually caused by dirt trapped in the sandpaper. Make sure your sandpaper is clean and try turning up your speed a little bit.
Hey ive been using that tool for years. I always use 220 on spackle. Not sure why u got those swirl marks on ur work. Plus put the tool on the wall then turn it on, dont turn it on then place it on the wall it might mess up ur finish
The next time you review this product can you demonstrate how easily the head swivels? I would really like to know when you sand the ceilings if you can hold the handle vertically vs at more of a 45 degree angle, which is much more stressful on the shoulders and arms. The problem with many sanders is the head does not swivel freely enough. This becomes an issue when you hold the handle closer to a vertical position because it causes the head to create more swivel marks.
What you can do is avoid paying the money for the vacuum by hooking your shop vac up to the sander . To do this , you buy one of those pole sanding vacuum pads and you take the hose from that kit ...the one that's size on size to the vacuum port on the Festool. You take a propane torch and heat up the hose end very slightly until it's just hot to the touch...and you push/twist it onto the exhaust port so it can cool and contract. Once it's cool , connect the other end to the shop vac hose and tape them together ...and you're in business. If you want to remove it, just heat it up a bit and it will come off. This will give you lots of additional hose and range without moving the shop vac every 30 seconds . One other thing , tape your power cord and vacuum hose together every two feet just to keep everything untangled.

I always learn something from your videos but I am right in the middle of covering plaster and lath with 1/4 inch drywall in a bedroom and I am destroying the sheetrock. So my wife wants me to hire someone to hang the wallboard and if I'm gonna play them to do that I might as well pay them to mud the walls also! 😁

You're the first who actually takes the time to explain the type of sandpaper grit and speed used for these drywall sanders. Serendipitously, a couple days ago I tried for the first time my Porter-Cable sander with 150 grit (I soon realized that the grit was too strong) and being a wuss, I stayed at speed 1. Considering it was my first time, I was very impressed by the results and low dust levels. Next time I'll go with a higher grit ;) Keep on the great work and looking forward to your other drywall sander videos. Question: You mentioned that your painting buddies also used this sander for prepping the walls, do know the grit and speed they use?
At 2:38 you covered these 3 metal electrodes in the vacuum with a bag, they should be exposed for the electronics to work properly. They are responsible for few things like antistatic properties, and if you want to vacuum the water they must be exposed so that the vacuum turns off at the right moment.
i just did a water damage repair for a client. used my £20 sander with mirka abranet paper on it attached to my £30 wet dry vaccuum. so im about £1850 in pocket compared to the festool lol.

What grit were you using for paint prep? I've used it and found that it gets the paper gummed up with chunks latex and stops working. Also with the speed you were moving I would suggest that you go to the 300 grit.
Maybe I missed something from another video, but what is going to happen to that weird spot with the inset drywall by the window? Wouldn't the owner want that filled in and flush with the wall?
I believe they'll use the Ditra-Schluter system for the shower surround so my guess would be that they'll simply lay a sheet of Kerdi board into that weird gap to fill it?
We use 220 grit, sands perfect, no swirls. You might be picking up crap, hard mud, that cuts into finish. We use mirka leros sanders, light and simply made. Jealous you got that for free.
Very good video you are doing a good job. Have you ever used mud Flat box and auto tape machine ? Are they easy to use has some vidéo are showing ? I just finish a job and I realize mud application results are much easier to see with normal lighting at night. Under day light I thought everything done but no night time highlights place I forget cause they were not easy to see during day time
I bought a cheap one for $99 that plugs into my vacmaster. Shouldn't have to ever sand 1st or second base coats, should be good enough to knife off lift points. Whats happening with that weird panel on the shower????
Did Festool downgrade their hose and electrical cord on the dust collectors? Mine came with the higher end looking black and green hose and a much beefier power cord. Very odd.
Wen sells a sander for 129.00 that blows the fes tool away. Fes tool sanders are tough to use. We have two that sit in the back of the office because my guys hate em. They have 10 times more touch up with the fes tools.
I've used mine to to a bunch of things. They actually make 24 grit paper that I've used to remove painted popcorn/texture and even to sand irregularities out of subflooring prior to laying vinyl plank. One thing I recommend for any drywall sander is to purchase a cyclone that will take out almost of the dust before it gets to the vacuum. This saves on bags. A typical job can easily fill two or three 5gal pails with dust.
It may be better to start off with the least aggressive sanding pad until you get a grasp of the level of damage each sanding grit is capable of causing.
Swirl marks are because you have the dust collection set too high. Set the dust collection based on the tool head on the wall. It should not stick to the wall but should easily float on the wall.
Thanks for the tour of that cool town, sure you could have pushed through, but as you said, it's helpful to step back then come back with fresh caffeinated 👀, and it worked out that you had an idea on how to capture it on video.
What grit are you using? I was trying to use my festool ets for a small drywall job the other day and right away stopped. Even in the lowest speed using my highest grit I currently have (120grit) it was just going through way too quick. I was sanding through everything and then the paper.
$3500 Aussie dollars for one of these (full kit RRP)....so approx US$2700. Aus customers are probably being ripped off although I don't know Canadian or USA RRP. Not something you'd buy to fix up the spare room. That being said I'd love one!
Hi I own one of these they are ok But in my opinion the festool single piece Easy Sander is a better machine They are lighter considerably cheaper have a brushless motor and just better balanced Have 3 of them in use currently They haven’t got the grunt of a porter cable sander but the firmer backing pad and smoothly motor with the oscillating head make it it he best machine on the market
Hey man, I have the vac CT48 and the Planex 2. My question to you is, when the walls are basically almost done and you re trying to do a quick finishing touch, where do you set the sander vac at? For me it always seems to bite straight into the drywall and leave swirlmarks. Do you know? Thanks.

The dust collection system makes tons of difference.
Check Festool plunge/track saw, the dust collection system makes it almost dust free.

Sanding with Festool looks easy but cleaning out the drywall dust in the canister a chore? ... and how long between cleaning?
For the swirls, look at the suction control settings, if this is set to ceiling with the vacuum all the way up that might be causing your issue.

You need to move the bag around the ground plugs on canister so it makes contact with he motor housing.

I have used the Planex a number of times I also sold them. I found broad sweeping motions side to side keep it light.

It looks like a high-dollar metal detector. All Festool toys are quite expensive. I like my DeWalt's.

use the net abrasive.. it should solve your problems with the scratches

What grit are you using? I was trying to use my festool ets for a small drywall job the other day and right away stopped. Even in the lowest speed using my highest grit I currently have (120grit) it was just going through way too quick. I was sanding through everything and then the paper.
$3500 Aussie dollars for one of these (full kit RRP)....so approx US$2700. Aus customers are probably being ripped off although I don't know Canadian or USA RRP. Not something you'd buy to fix up the spare room. That being said I'd love one!

Hi I own one of these they are ok
But in my opinion the festool single piece Easy Sander is a better machine
They are lighter considerably cheaper have a brushless motor and just better balanced
Have 3 of them in use currently
They haven’t got the grunt of a porter cable sander but the firmer backing pad and smoothly motor with the oscillating head make it it he best machine on the market

That's weird that it's leaving swirly marks because it's an orbital sander.
Hey man, I have the vac CT48 and the Planex 2. My question to you is, when the walls are basically almost done and you re trying to do a quick finishing touch, where do you set the sander vac at? For me it always seems to bite straight into the drywall and leave swirlmarks. Do you know? Thanks.
*New Sub here* Question: since I do not need a "Festool" $,$$$.$$ sander, is there a good DIYer equivalent that does a good job? Any replies are appreciated.
