The Polish-Russian war of 1792 wasn't about reversing the previous partition. Russia invaded in 1792 to destroy the Polish reforms. Background: between 1788 and 1792 a serious effort at self-reform had been conveyed in Poland, culminating with the adoption of the national constitution on the 3rd of May 1791 by the parliament (sejm) and local councils (sejmiks). The previous, unruly political system of the noble's democracy (magnates' oligarchy in practice) was replaced by an English-like system of the parliamentary constitutional monarchy (coupled with several other internal reforms). Russia and Prussia (beacons of absolutism and conservatism) were afraid reformed Poland would: 1) serve as a dangerous inspiration for their people 2) rebuild her power. Thus, when some magnates opposing the reforms appeared in Petersburg, Russia was willing to 'help' them. To this day 'Targowica' (the name of the confederation established by those magnates) is synonymous to high treason.

Actually, the partitions of Poland was a failure of russian external politics. Catherine the Great already had Stanisław Poniatowski as a king of Poland, he was her puppet. The entire Commonwealth as a whole was already under russian influence, and german states interfered to preserve the balance of power.
Now, I would argue that it was indeed a failure of Polish internal affairs, as having Poniatowski joining the reformators camp forced the Russians to act against him. Russians were fully content of having PLC under their control, they weren't interested in changing it. But as you've said, Prussians also interfered and thus, the country had to be partitioned. Even Austria had only joined the partitons because they couldn't just allow their neighbours to grow while they did nothing. Sadly, had Poland remained under Russian control until the Napoleonic Wars, Catherine would've died by then, and with a pro-Polish Tsar on the throne, things would have been different. Plus, the borders would be still intact.

You can't just take somebody's capital city and then pretend like it's nothing.
@@kostam.1113 Yeah that stupid move ruined our relationship with Lithuania. It's a great pity.
@@jannatalis4697 Vilnius was extremely multicultural back in those days and had large Polish population so it kinda made sense, although for Poland what was just another city for Lithuania was cultural, historical and economical capital.

That was polish-litwanian mistake to conquer the Russia in 15-17 centuries.
arty It was a mistake not to tolerate their devotion to the Orthodox-Christian religion.
@@PauliesWalnuts and this is reason to war? And why Russia didn't have rules to belive religion, what Russia wanted, why Poland choosed religion for Russia instead Russia? It is like if USSR choosed communist political system in US, and if America wasn't agree, USSR daclared war to US. Poland didn't have international and moral rules to invade Russia, fucking agressors.

@@anne.andromeda I asked what is Bar Confederation, not Poland!
Nobility with to many privileges
It was an organised movement against the rule of king Stanisław August Poniatowski and Russian influence over the Commonwealth. One of its members was Kazimierz Pułaski, known for his later involvement in the United States' War of Independence.

After all, Poland's worst enemy was it's nobility
Poland was too unlucky that Frederick was king of Prussia in 1st partition. He wanted to link his domains and Poland being in civil war made it an easy prey. The 2nd and 3rd partitions were easier after Poland itself legitimizing the 1st.
This is beautiful

Some people claim that the Hungarians betrayed the Poles because they took part in the partitions of Poland. Bullshit. The Austro-Hungarian state was in name only. Only the Austrians ruled and the Hungarians had nothing to say about politics. The Austrians partitioned Poland. Hungarians have always been our brothers.
During the partitions only were the Austrians who controled the territory
2:09 Sad Fact:In map it looks like Poland only losing against Russia. In reality Polish army won two battles (Zieleńce,Dubienka).Unfortunately PLC king joined to Targowica Rebellion(against 3rd May Constitution),and ordered to stop fighting.

Very good choice btw
Poor Poland, they didn't actually deserve that.
Everyone says "Austria were a Polish ally and also attacked them with the Russians and Prussians!" Technically, Austria were the best at that, why? Well Prussia and Russia were destroying Poles with their opression, while Austria besides everything gave the Poles autonomy.
Yes, yes, autonomy. But even then, Russian part of Poland was richer than Galicia, the poorest region of the Austrian Empire.
Russia is like that one one friend that you invite for homework after school and ends up eating during dinner with your family and stays for the night
Great video as always! I find it interesting that the PLC didn’t consider extending rights to the Ruthenians until after they had already lost most of Ruthenia. Now, for the comment i always leave on your videos. DO SECOND CONGO WAR please.
There were no rights being withheld from the ruthenians. The ruthenians lost all their battles for nothing and in their very little time of being sovereign that got killed me russian and subjected to extreme russification
