I don't think this ride really has a large fanbase, but I think this ride and the area surrounding it is the best remant of the original DCA. It was by far the best themed area when the park opened. Really made you feel like you were in the forest, vs. the cheaply themed areas of the rest of the park.
I agree! It's also such a nice oasis, always feels a bit cooler and calmer than the rest of the park when I visit. Plus I'm a National Park girlie so it's great to see that represented in DCA, feels so California!
My head canon is that this area was the best themed because it was the part of the park that the expensive hotel rooms at the Grand Californian looked out on :D. But at least us regular guests got to be there.
My trick for dry feet on this ride: I toss a pair of flip flops and a washcloth from the hotel room into my backpack. Before getting on the ride, I change out of my shoes and socks and into the flip flops. After getting off, use the washcloth to dry off my feet and change back into shoes & socks, then use the washcloth again to dry off the flip flops before putting them back in the bag. Works like a charm.
Exactly what I do, except instead of the wash cloth I just rock the flip flops until everything is dry before going back to socks/shoes haha. Great tip 👍
@@SherbetAlex If you've been watching the show, they've rated different iterations at the same time. I don't think Tokyo would be in the mix as Ryan has not been there yet. Paris's was the old CA version but was updated recently.
The sitting with strangers thing can be a bad. Although it can lead to one of the best experiences in the Park. I remember I went on with a couple and we stayed on together for like 10 rides and talked the whole time. One of my favorite memories of a ride anywhere in the resort.
I was making the same argument as Matt did when Ryan was doing his pitch. It's entirely possible that the current lineup of river rapid rides just can't rise to the level of world class so even if you grab the best one (or one of the best), it may not make the cut. Still sounds like a hell of a ride but within their metrics, it comes up juuuust a bit short
Damn. I'd put it at world class simply for the MY MY MY YOU'RE ALL WET line. That's pitch perfect comedy that theme parks don't often hit well especially on repeat rides
Bill Thompson was a rabbit! He was the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland (as well as the Dodo). He was also the voice of drunken Uncle Waldo in the Aristocats - an icon. He had a pretty interesting range of voices when you look at the full list, and he has a star on the Hollywood walk of fame for his radio acting!
My Bff and I got stuck right at top of the second drop. It was so dope to see them drain the whole river run and then go to go through the mountain in order to exit. Probably the best experience on Grizzly River Run.
I love this fucking ride. Went with my mum to Disneyland the first time and we had such a laugh with strangers. Although, charging people to dry their clothes is insane
There's something extra fun about it being with strangers! That's part of the reason why I love it (and other rapid rides), the camaraderie is perfect if you get a good group
Anytime i see a river rapid at an amusement park i am so excited! I have only done the parks on the rast coast but Dollywood has a pretty good one. Not Disney worth but pretty good
Damn, I was hoping you wouldn't do this attraction until I'd become famous for something and could come on this podcast and defend it myself It's my favourite thing at DCA, it's like the ultimate expression of summer fun to me. Like, you go on GRR, you are having a successful summer
Fun fact for 90's kids: Jeff Bennett is the voice actor for a number of Disney related properties, but my absolute favorite is he's the voice of Brooklyn from Disney's Gargoyles! :)
I loved Gargoyles, but I wouldn't be able to recognise his voice, as I watched dubbed in Spanish. And honestly, if I could pick only one thing to get a reboot, I would definitely pick Gargoyles.
To piggyback off your points brought up by Test #6, removing Grizzly River Run would in turn cause Disney to [likely] change the theming of The Grand Californian which in turn would leave DCA no longer feeling like DCA (which I’d argue it has already lost 90% of its identity).
Oooo that would be AMAZING! I wonder what ride they would pick 🤔 part of me says it would be Jaws. But I wonder if they would want to cover an international ride?
This is one of the rides on my DCA must do list every visit regardless of weather and wait time. I would wait 60 minutes for this particularly if everything was 60 minutes.
On my favorite run on GRR my friend and I were sitting across from each other. I went backwards down the big drop and when we hit the bottom a wave of white water enveloped me and I just see my friend laughing. But at the same time I see a ball of water fly over my shoulder and slap her Square in the face. The sound was priceless 😂
Checked TH-cam and saw this just dropped a minute ago! Can't wait to see what you have in store with this attraction. I am predicting this is not going to be a World Class Attraction on the fact it will not pass the Tony Stark and Hollywood Tests alone. Unless there is a story you can pick a part I am unaware of. Love the Podcast! Can't wait to see what you all say! :D
I've only done this ride once in recent memory and you all made an arguement in my mind. That while there is not a story being told in terms of something that would fit in the Hollywood Test. It borderline could one day if they refurbed it. Added some animatronic animals here and there. Maybe the Main Character is the artist that was missing from his Kayak. He's lost in the woods and he meets the spirit of the Bear in the Mountain late at night. He was a college student who was just looking to clear his mind. Maybe paint a picture. The sounds of the area beckon him to explore and he learns the story of the Bear and The Coyote. That is 100 percent a stretch. But I could see it working one day if they really went at it.
Got stuck in a downpour once. Took my wet sneakers into the restroom stall, folded up some toilet paper, sat down, took off my shoe & started absorbing water from the insole. Repeated until they weren't sopping wet. Same for socks. This definitely saved my feet. No pruney feet, no blisters. The last stall is pretty ideal for this move, please don't use the accessible stalls. Another time I did this same trick but managed to find a family restroom about 30 mins later. Ran in, used the blower to finish drying my shoes. Worked great! A wet day at a theme park is still the best day😅
Great episode, as usual. Wish there was the budget to include some animatronics and a bit more on-ride themeing. Going forward, when can I come on and do Big Thunder Mountain!?
When I was younger, my brothers and I rode this ride on a winter night and got a themed pin! They're not locals, so when we do have the chance to hit DCA we try to ride Grizzly River Run at least three times, haha.
I recognized Bill Thompson's voice immediately, but as the white rabbit in the original alice in wonderland! So that's probably the rabbit you guys were thinking of. He's done many voice acting gigs and he's one of the few disney voices i can actually put a name to just by hearing it lol
i will continue to say it: i think a coherent THEME is important for a ride, but not necessarily a plotline. if you appreciate the ride more for not having a storyline/the rides score is hurt for something you consider a good quality in certain types of rides, then the hollywood test is unfair. cruel and unusual even. theming yes, but not every ride needs a comprehensive plot! scenic rides like this one, roller coasters, etc!!! love u guys
11:12 Donald is in one of the shorts featured in Fun and Fancy Free, but theres two different versions with different framing devices. One has that silly German duck (I always forget his name sorry), and one is live action and features Edgar Bergen and some horrifying ventriloquist dummies.
I remember on some Disney VHS (maybe a DVD, but I’m pretty sure it was in coming attractions for some VHS I had) they had an ad for California Adventure where the Grizzly Mountain roared. That’s stuck with me for some reason.
I've never been on this ride because I hate being wet at a theme park, but I'm glad you covered it! I remember the rumors about animatronic animals being added to this ride. There was also mention of a train ride that would take in the same scenery. What was said at the time -- I have no idea if this is true -- is that because Grizzly Peak was built on top of dirt it wasn't able to support the additional weight of animatronics. It is always bizarre to me that there's a Disney ride themed to grizzly bears and the only animals you see along the route are the glowing eyes of rats peering at you in the one of the mines. (If those are even still there.)
