Man, I pray Microsoft goes back and fixes some of these issues. It's heartbreaking to see the state of these older CoD's especially when recent Call of Duty games can't even touch games like Bo1, AW, and Bo2, just to name a few. The worst part is that I played CoD MW2 about 2 years ago and I made friends and now it is just infested with hackers that will find your IP in 2 seconds. Love your videos keep up the good work.
Black Ops 1, (the multiplayer at least) is definitely vulnerable to RCE. I've been RCE'd on BO1. He was opening calculator and stuff on my PC and later the guy even showed me a screenshot of the tool he used. It also had the ability to browse your file system amongst other things. It happened in a private match by the way, so if you're the host at least you are definitely vulnerable.
Thank you for the heads up on this, you're honestly one of the first people that has told me about BO1 RCEs. If it happened in a private match, I would imagine it was probably easier for the hacker to do it in a p2p connection based setting instead of through server browsers, very sorry to hear this.
@@SuperBranFlakezyea they need you connected too the server in order too do anything but they can see a list of all the players connected too the server that’s how they give people rats and malware pretty much anything they want too do
Good on you for making this video. People needed to hear all of this and it doesn’t seem many content creators are too informed on these matters. Hopefully we see a boost on these clients now.
One note on CoD1: Honestly it’s gotten to the point where the expansion pack, United Offensive, is a lot more commonly populated that any version of CoD1. It’s really sad to see but that’s what I’ve noticed recently.
On behalf of the AlterWare team thanks for making this video. - Future I would exercise caution even on CoD4 and WaW PC version because having the server browser instead of P2P does not guarantee anything. CoD4 has an RCE exploits that is only patched on the CoD4x client. WaW has the same RCE which is only patched on plutonium. This mean that the community run servers for WaW and CoD4 can compromise your if the server owner choose to. Client versions are okay.
Gotcha! Thank you for the heads up on this man. Yeah I figured that with servers, it's up to the server owners to not only provide the security but also gotta hope that they're the ones who aren't trying to access their players data. Good to know about CoD4x and WaW Pluto
you can't even play cod4 without cod4x apart from like 5 servers so its pretty much a none issue unless you are trying to play on some uber modded russian 1.6 server with 0 pop on the other hand cod4x gave a bunch of neckbeards the opportunity to gatekeep and control how people play the game, 90% of servers now ban you just for hitting a bounce or getting out of map for clips and also gave them the ability to IP/Mac ban instead of just keycodes, which is a bigger red flag than playing on the dodgy none cod4x servers
Nice video, I came back to COD on PC after playing years ago and was confused about all the RCE stuff, this is perfect. Worth noting that MW2 and MW3 have FOV changers available which you can use on steam should the steam version become the best option at any point.
I'm a little late to this video but I just want to put a comment saying thanks. This is an extremely in-depth video that answered any and all questions that I may have had regarding playing old versions of COD. It's actually insane to me that for Infinite Warfare, that entire segment was basically just "it's fucked, R.I.P"
If you make this video in 2025 I think that you should talk about how Steam BO2 servers have been backdoored since around last year. You’re extremely unlikely to see hackers or people using RCE in BO2 anymore because Blasts Mods backdoored the servers, almost anyone who uses any sort of cheat is automatically banned as a result of his anti-cheat. Even though it may not seem like it now, BO2 is VERY unsafe to play since he can RAT anyone playing the game online. Activision/Treyarch needs to be made aware of this.
You forgot to mention a major issue in Black Ops 1 Steam where your rank is randomly reset. It affects a lot of people, seen many players lose max prestige (myself as well)
Seems like the same bug you can get in world at war by going on some modded servers, it resets your rank after, and in WaW it also erases your campaign progress :(
@@thechugg4372 That’s normal though, certain mods will have different stats for their mods/servers and your stats should be back to normal once you unload the mod and vice versa
thanks for doing this Mike, there's currently someone going around on Pluto BO2 crashing and kicking people out of servers, I'm sure it will be fixed soon. regardless of the server crashing - it's still safe!
The fact that the people at SM2 switched games, backpedaled on their "need to own" status, and then got immediately shut down was the biggest bag fumble of that year. Absolutely brutal to see probably the best cod game we could have ever gotten slip through our hands like that. I hope someone out there does it again but properly this time. Really sucks to see it go but they had it coming with trying to advocate for piracy. That in combination with MW2 maps coming to MWIII just meant that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and gave activision all the reason to nuke them.
What happened with sm2 really was tragic. Definitely would've been one of the greatest CoD experiences. I don't know exactly what caused the change of the need to own status when changing from IW4 to H1, but I know that was definitely one of the biggest red flags for them. Even if they stuck on the need to own MWR, I think you make a good point, the MW2 Remastered maps coming to MWIII could've been a good enough reason for it to get hit, but who knows what would've happened. That's always the risk with these kinda games, especially the MW2 Remastered projects that have come and gone, there's always a chance Acti is holding the real MW2R as the ace up their sleeve and can drop it whenever so it would force them to shut projects down.
@@Rxqe Good thoughts! I totally agree with you. It really is a shame to see, but that doesn't mean something equally as epic won't come out in the future, and there are already many amazing projects in the works. I am really excited about what is to come with BO4 over the next couple of years. I've seen some cool zombies alterations and being able to place objects through kinda like a dev mode, so hopefully it will have a bright future.
For me I bought infinite warfare purely for offline play on my Steam Deck. I would've done BO3 but it was slightly more expensive on the recent steam sale and I'm strapped for cash, but it was worth buying one despite the budget issues as I ain't paying £50+ for an old COD game I only want to play offline for a few private matches against bots and maybe some zombies, and I miss the exo COD's as I played BO3 and IW a lot at launch. I've got COD4 from the old disc copy I got, but I fancied a futuristic COD to substitute Titanfall 2 for while I'm offline, and IW fits perfectly with both my desire for exo COD and budget
Just to be extra sure: are these advices to be applied to COD multiplayer functions only? Playing the single player campaigns or extra modes (like Spec Ops and Zombies) is perfectly safe? Just want to be extra sure.
On June 14th, 2024, vanilla IW's servers got fixed (The fastfile error no longer exists, it's fully playable again), would be nice to see you update that in the pinned comment.
Thank you for making these videos on the old COD games for PC. I just started to replay some of them that I played in the past, starting with the campaigns and I was searching how is the multiplayer doing. Can't wait to try some of the games that I didn't play :D
Did mention CoDUO in last years vid, a good friend of mine told me about a base assault server thats decently popped and figured the same for this go around
Just a heads up, most of the old cods are still active and populated on the PS3 in 2024 the games below are the best ones to play: 1. Cod 4 2. BO1 3. WaW Keep in mind to play BO1 and have your level save, you have to be on a PlayStation account that played the game prior to 2018. For WaW and Cod4 you can play on a brand new account.
Plutonium has not added steam verification yet, only server owners have to verify as of rn Edit: also for infinite warfare there is the iw7x client that isnt fully dead, people are working on servers and I personally made a fork for iw7x that allows for pirated copies
in my experiences of mw2, Free-For-All is the safest game mode to play. i’ve never once ran into a malicious hacker, and it’s fairly quick to find a game. i’d avoid Team Deathmatch. Team Deathmatch is where i’ve experienced all of the malicious hackers and cheaters. Bo2 i’ve never tried to join an online game for my own safety, and Ghosts and Advanced Warfare are so dead to the point that you can’t even find a match, so i wouldn’t worry about those two
I got WW2 for Christmas this year and I have about 250 hours in 2 months. Do I need a life? Absolutely! However, besides some cheaters in MP here in there, I have no issues. I play from EU and there are almosr always players on Shipment and TDM. Zombies also has some players, but zombies is usually played alone since new players can c*ckblock you during EEs. No security issues were encountered (and I work in the field). WW2 is updated for bug fixes and stuff quite a bit. I saw bugs from 3 months ago be fixed when I tried it just about a month later.
Another great video Mike. Two quick questions: (1) What exactly changed between this Everything you need to know and the 2023 one. (2) I had decided to mod the game to replace the SAS announcer (Wallcroft) with the MW2 2009 Militia Announcer and the spawn theme with the COD4 Opfor. Do this make the game any better? P.S. as of lately, I did play a lot of IW5 Original MW3. No safety issues so thanks Mike.
what changed from 2023 to 2024 is quite literally what this video is in its entirety, and if you modded the files to what you want then I would guess it makes it better? idk I haven't done that, so if it makes your personal experience better then all the power to ya
It's incredibly annoying that simply playing one of the biggest series in modern gaming on PC *AT ALL* requires modding and just avoiding certain titles cuz screw you I guess.
i have the torrented versions of the games and i can play it on plutonium, it doesnt matter if u dont verify that u own the game you just click play and thats it
sadly the best experience of older cods is on console, mw2 on xbox is like we were in 2010, thanks to cross-platform the newer cods will last much longer
that's correct, I mean even back then there were still plenty of cheats evem back in the old days but for sure nowadays cod will last much longer with crossplay
I watched this all fully knowing I'll never play another game of cod again and can't run the new ones anyway. Just interesting to see what's broken and how bad
How do these clients have such a low amount of players? This is awesome, idk how i did not know about most of these clients until now, i only knew about plutonium

@@Rxqe lmao hell yeah dude, i am a certified courtney laplante simp 😂 i also noticed later in the video you have that eternal blue hoodie, wish i had that one

Hi man, thanks for the vid! I really appreciate the work. I've been looking at this for a while and am still wondering if it is safe to play the new MW2. I do want to play some cod, but god damn it is frustrating that billion dollar companies just dont care to this extent.
Okay, so I'm a little stupid, and some of this stuff went over my head. While I think I got most of it, i do have some questions just to clear things up: So, for context: I'm mainly just getting WaW, BO1, and BO2 for some classic zombies solo or with just one, maybe 2 friend(s) if we do go multi-player it'll probably still just be us 2-3. Just to relive some old school nostalgia 1. RCE exploits shouldn't affect me/us as we will be in private servers and not with any randoms, correct? 2. If 1 is correct, then it shouldn't matter if we are running straight steam ver or a client ver, right? Along with that, even if we are playing privately, would you still recommend playing cliented versions? 3. Outside of the community patch, would you still recommend playing BO3 with a client? again, keeping the private lobby in mind. (This one isn't as likely for me/us to play, but it's not off the table) From what i understand, I/we should be safe as long as I/we remain in private lobbies and not interacting with anyone regardless if we are playing the raw steam ver or cliented ver, but like I said, I just wanted to clear all that up before I eventually dive and and end up getting my computer bricked or worse from malware. Either way, thanks for the video. It definitely helped even if some of it whizzed passed me
Ideally yes, RCEs shouldn't affect you and your friends if you guys are playing together on steam in your own private match. Unless you or your friend have some unwanted attention from someone who would want to go out of their way to harm. I personally would recommend playing on the clients regardless as they do provide the most up to date protections; plus you can uncap fov/fps, provide unlock all, etc. Clients are just better for protection/customization. You could play solo, or if friends join, you guys could create a server and play (although I personally don't know how to set a server up, I think you could join off each other using radmin vpn - host would give their ip to the friends, friends would type /connect insertiphere into the console and can connect that way). For BO3, yes I would highly recommend the BOIII client. If you're going to play steam, you definitely should be using the community patch even in a private lobby as it not only fixes the FPS problem with steam BO3, but also provides security. You and your friends would all need to be running the T7 patch, enter a custom made password in that box, and then join off each other. That's just for steam, BOIII client does not need T7 patch. Hope this helps!
@Rxqe I see thank you. It definitely helps. I've never run a cliented version of any game before, so im still figuring things out. I'll keep all this in mind. Thank you again
Amazing Video Man , thank you. i think you said it at the start of the video . but just to be clear if i wanted to play all the call of dutys just for the story mode is that ok ? or do i run a risk of a RAT or RCE ?
hey man, saw the cod franchise getting discounted and i was wondering if it’s safe to play in steam 2024 nowadays? i’m a huge fan of these old games and i don’t see a lot of people making video about the hacking situation and such. i’ll be waiting for the response! thanks.
If your playing solo gamemodes, then no problem. The public servers are the problem. You'll mostly not have any problems but it also dépends on wich COD you buy
Cod4 didnt work for me. If i try to connect to the server it says that i have to manually install the mod. I tried to manually install the mod in the mod folder but now cod4 Multiplayer is not starting anymore with the error code "Impure file iw3mp.exe detected"
I recently bought waw on steam and there’s not that many populated servers and most of it is crouch only servers. I just want to play regular multiplayer servers to get the real feeling of cod. I can’t afford WW2 or bo3.
@@Rxqe Xenia - Xbox 360 emulator and RPCS3 - PS3 emulator. Have seen both emulators play games at > 60 fps and there isn't a recent video for 360 era COD titles to get a rough idea of performance so I may have to sail the seas. It's plausible that Lossless Scaling's frame generation feature could give us high fps without causing bugs in the game
Just so there is no doubt, which is the best and safest way to play Zombies singleplayer and with friends? Is it the steam version of bo3 or the boiii client? Does the boiii client support playing custom zombies with friends?
BOIII client does support custom zombies with friends tmk, but I'm not 100% sure how to set up a server. What you could do if you decided to use BOIII, is use radmin for everyone to connect to each other. That would be the safest way with friends. However, steam BO3 with the T7 patch would be the easier way to go about it with less hoops to jump through in getting BOIII set up. For T7 community patch, if say you're hosting a lobby, you can set a password in the T7 patch and tick the friends only box. Then have all your friends get the T7 patch, enter that password in their patch, and then join you to be the absolute safest. So really both are good options, Steam with T7 may just be easier to set up. Singleplayer offline is fine regardless of however you wanna go about it, but if you're on steam, you may as well run the T7 patch
Hello, what an amazing job that you have done. I would like to ask. There are many players on playing iw6x? The last time that I have had checked. Just a few were playing, less than 30 in the whole client.
Not to my knowledge man, the IW6 client was never super populated :( do join into the alterware cord though, I believe they have chats and everything for Ghosts
My guy listens to BB, thank you for the useful info. I wanna play some of the games, but don't trust the steam version at all. And these games are still expensive af.
Been wanting to play some ghosts and advanced warfare recently, want to double-check if I'm safe or not from RCE/RAT exploits and if there is anything else I should know about ghosts/aw. Also, could I play steam bo3 multiplayer safely if I'm running the community patch? (btw you're the goat)
refer back to the beginning of the video and the ghosts/aw section of the video. exploits are a possibility, but due to the smaller playerbase, I honestly doubt anything would happen. same for BO3, refer back to that section of the video. you SHOULD absolutely be running the T7 patch if you want to play BO3 steam, otherwise, I would highly recommend just playing the boiii client.
@@Rxqe One final question I have is about an anti-rce. Would Malwarebytes Premium be considered one and will it protect me perfectly fine? Thanks for the help!
@@Alastair.C I'm not too sure about that honestly. I would assume that having extra security on your pc in general would help for alerts if anything goes wrong, but I don't know what could happen worst case scenario

Thank you for the heads up on this, you're honestly one of the first people that has told me about BO1 RCEs. If it happened in a private match, I would imagine it was probably easier for the hacker to do it in a p2p connection based setting instead of through server browsers, very sorry to hear this.
Think this would be immune in steam deck/linux?
You are vulnerable because it's not a dedicated server
Can they only control ur pc if the game clients open?
@@SuperBranFlakezyea they need you connected too the server in order too do anything but they can see a list of all the players connected too the server that’s how they give people rats and malware pretty much anything they want too do
Good on you for making this video. People needed to hear all of this and it doesn’t seem many content creators are too informed on these matters. Hopefully we see a boost on these clients now.
happy to help man!
One note on CoD1: Honestly it’s gotten to the point where the expansion pack, United Offensive, is a lot more commonly populated that any version of CoD1. It’s really sad to see but that’s what I’ve noticed recently.

I would exercise caution even on CoD4 and WaW PC version because having the server browser instead of P2P does not guarantee anything.
Good to know about CoD4x and WaW Pluto
you can't even play cod4 without cod4x apart from like 5 servers so its pretty much a none issue unless you are trying to play on some uber modded russian 1.6 server with 0 pop
on the other hand cod4x gave a bunch of neckbeards the opportunity to gatekeep and control how people play the game, 90% of servers now ban you just for hitting a bounce or getting out of map for clips and also gave them the ability to IP/Mac ban instead of just keycodes, which is a bigger red flag than playing on the dodgy none cod4x servers
Nice video, I came back to COD on PC after playing years ago and was confused about all the RCE stuff, this is perfect. Worth noting that MW2 and MW3 have FOV changers available which you can use on steam should the steam version become the best option at any point.
happy to help man! and yeah exactly things like fps/fov unlockers are relatively common to come by so not too bad, but def need antirce's
This video came at a good time, I’ve been thinking about what previous cod to play on pc today
happy to help! haha good timing
It affects a lot of people, seen many players lose max prestige (myself as well)
I honestly didn't know about that, I haven't had that happen to me. Is it common? Where could I learn more about it?
Seems like the same bug you can get in world at war by going on some modded servers, it resets your rank after, and in WaW it also erases your campaign progress :(
@@thechugg4372 That’s normal though, certain mods will have different stats for their mods/servers and your stats should be back to normal once you unload the mod and vice versa
Welp at least there's Plutonium for BO1 too.
thanks for doing this Mike, there's currently someone going around on Pluto BO2 crashing and kicking people out of servers, I'm sure it will be fixed soon. regardless of the server crashing - it's still safe!
of course man! and thank you for the heads up, yeah thing is on all the clients/server browsers, it's up to the owners to keep the security up to date
I was literally just going to look into whether or not there were any clients left. This video came at the perfect time, thanks rxqe!
haha perfect timing, happy to help man!
Awesome. I levelled up my mw2 2009 steam but now I'm seeing hackers again where you can't choose to leave the game. Will be updating iw4x. Thanks
also one thing about CoD2: if you have RivaTuner Statistics Server installed, turn it off before you launch the game, otherwise it won’t boot up.
thanks for the heads up! :)
I play on Consol, but this is still fascinating to watch, good video

it's sad i have to do some research before hoping online in any of these games now and that Activision refuses to let the fan clients stay up
Just a heads up, most of the old cods are still active and populated on the PS3 in 2024 the games below are the best ones to play:
1. Cod 4
2. BO1
3. WaW
Keep in mind to play BO1 and have your level save, you have to be on a PlayStation account that played the game prior to 2018. For WaW and Cod4 you can play on a brand new account.
Cod 4 and WaW it’s extremely rare to find cheaters, on BO1 maybe 1 of every 15 games u play there will be a cheater.
love that for PS3, good to see some old gen is still going
Plutonium has not added steam verification yet, only server owners have to verify as of rn
Edit: also for infinite warfare there is the iw7x client that isnt fully dead, people are working on servers and I personally made a fork for iw7x that allows for pirated copies
correct, little mistake on my part. although I won’t be surprised if it’s integrated for all users eventually
We need more people on Modern Warfare Remastered (h1-mod)!
FOR REAL
Yo i hope you have an amazing year ahaead
thank you, you too man!
in my experiences of mw2, Free-For-All is the safest game mode to play. i’ve never once ran into a malicious hacker, and it’s fairly quick to find a game. i’d avoid Team Deathmatch. Team Deathmatch is where i’ve experienced all of the malicious hackers and cheaters. Bo2 i’ve never tried to join an online game for my own safety, and Ghosts and Advanced Warfare are so dead to the point that you can’t even find a match, so i wouldn’t worry about those two
that would make sense since tdm is the most popular game mode
Understandable video mike thank u ❤️💯

well put together vid, time to hit closer perchance? need a new rxqe tage
have had a few closers I could go with but am waiting til I hit the one where I know in that moment that I've hit it
I don't understand a thing ,how come people are getting banned from playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Campaign ??
i can play offline right? i just wanna play campaign and solo zombies
I saw bugs from 3 months ago be fixed when I tried it just about a month later.
glad to hear WWII is a good experience for you man :)
Lmao what the fuck are these questions
dont hit the pipe before typing out a question
It's incredibly annoying that simply playing one of the biggest series in modern gaming on PC *AT ALL* requires modding and just avoiding certain titles cuz screw you I guess.
its the unfortunate part of games and security becoming outdated
i have the torrented versions of the games and i can play it on plutonium, it doesnt matter if u dont verify that u own the game you just click play and thats it
for now the steam verifications are for server owners, but I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a requirement for all players

Babe wake up, new rxqe upload
new rxqe tutorial dropped ❗❗ 🗣️
Okay, so I'm a little stupid, and some of this stuff went over my head. While I think I got most of it, i do have some questions just to clear things up:
So, for context: I'm mainly just getting WaW, BO1, and BO2 for some classic zombies solo or with just one, maybe 2 friend(s) if we do go multi-player it'll probably still just be us 2-3. Just to relive some old school nostalgia
(This one isn't as likely for me/us to play, but it's not off the table)
From what i understand, I/we should be safe as long as I/we remain in private lobbies and not interacting with anyone regardless if we are playing the raw steam ver or cliented ver, but like I said, I just wanted to clear all that up before I eventually dive and and end up getting my computer bricked or worse from malware.
Either way, thanks for the video. It definitely helped even if some of it whizzed passed me
Just use the clients. they're easy to set up and you can uncap your fps, unlock all, unlocked fov, etc
If you play campaign you’re completely safe
hey man, saw the cod franchise getting discounted and i was wondering if it’s safe to play in steam 2024 nowadays? i’m a huge fan of these old games and i don’t see a lot of people making video about the hacking situation and such.
i’ll be waiting for the response!
Are the console versions safe? I've been playing some WAW on xbox and was unaware of this issue..
console is fine, this video is about pc
i play crack version on plutonium and it works
There's also T4M that can be used for WaW, allows for fov changes in the SP.
if you use Plutonium you can use coop for campaign and have access to the dev console
I recently bought waw on steam and there’s not that many populated servers and most of it is crouch only servers. I just want to play regular multiplayer servers to get the real feeling of cod. I can’t afford WW2 or bo3.
Are they safe to play on consoles? Like the xbox one backword compatibility
yes

wow i asked how to play cod 4 in another video and just came across this thanks 😂
hahaha no problem man
I just hope I can still play the MP against bots in local play/private matches without being compromised should I buy them on Steam.
offline against bots is fine.
@@Rxqe Good to know, thank you.
I hope that Xenia or RPCS3 can make old COD games playable again hopefully with netplay and high fps.
I'm not familiar with those, are those different launchers or emulators?
I was locking at picking up some cod games from steam sale so this is perfect getting this 20 minute old video recomended
perfect timing! haha hope this helps man
Hello, what an amazing job that you have done.
And these games are still expensive af.
of course man, I completely understand all of that, just happy to help give the information
Are private matches while playing with bots safe? There shouldn't be a problem right
yeah private matches with bots is perfectly fine
Plutonium is great, but it's unplayable. All servers are set for 18 ppl and none of the maps plays well.
I mean 9v9 is great and most maps work just fine but ye it does get chaotic, would be cool to have reg 6v6
UPDATE on MW2 2009 on Steam - You join random lobbies that's ends up being Domination high teams, no kill cams, and cannot click escape to change class or leave the game... You have to Task Manager to quit the game... Sucks.
those are just people force hosting lobbies with anti leave, they're just there hosting 9v9 dom lobbies but yeah I can imagine that gets a little annoying
Happens on ww2 sometimes also
