When this iPod was released in 2001, I was in my senior year of highschool. At the time, this iPod certainly was better than hauling around a CD player and stacks of CDs or tapes to listen to music. I'm thinking the reason why the iTunes on the Windows PC wasn't recognizing this iPod is because this early iPod was only compatible with Mac.

Like this guy, in the game of Deus Ex, Alex Jacobson was a technician, spending his work day in a room full of computers and he was in charge of maintaining computers used for communication. Although unlike today, I don't think smartphones much existed in 2000 or 2001. Now for an iPod, I do actually still use a 2nd generation iPod touch today for listening to music. The i in iPhone, iPod, and iPad, goes back to the iMac, which was named as such because it was the first Mac to support Wi-Fi and to have a major focus on Internet connectivity itself. The i stood for Internet.
This technically means that iPhone, iPod, and iPad are Internet Phone, Internet Pod, and Internet Pad respectively.

Actually you can easily get to the files on an ipod via Finder / Explorer if you view hidden files. Whilst Apple stored the music in an archaic way using letter codes and random folders to deter people, you can still copy the music off. The original filenames can be restored based on metadata using MP3tag (which is Windows only but if you have Homebrew installed on Mac you can run the software in Wine).
This is also the best way to recover music if the iTunes.db file on the ipod was corrupted and disabling sync, but the music was still playable on the ipod.

I worked for an Apple retailer when the original iPod was released and contrary to popular opinion, I can reveal that it actually wasn't an instant hit. It initially required a Mac, and not just any Mac. It had to have Firewire (Which wasn't a given in 2001 given not everyone had a new Mac). I remember selling Firewire cards to some early adopters. Some even bought a new Mac. But most people were indifferent. Then came the next revision that worked on Windows, but still required a Firewire card. I can tell you, the average Joe with a Windows PC was not willing to buy an expensive card just so they could use this new "walkman". For a bit there, I was wondering if the iPod was going to be a failure. It was only when Apple released the USB 2.0 iPod (I think this version was the one with the buttons above, not around the wheel) together with the marketing of the dancing silhouettes, that the iPod became a cultural phenomenon.

Great video Collin. It wasn't surprised to see the iPod work with a mac, it's not so hard to keep support built in to Apple Music. I was surprised to see it not work in windows with iTunes. Now as far as devices such as laptops and iMacs that can be a different story as support for modern operating systems. For an operating system to work with legacy computers they may have to maintain a separate kernel to support the older cpu architecture or keep the support built into the mainline Darwin Kernel which could make the kernel rather large that takes up a lot of storage space. Also a larger kernel means more ram usage as well which would have significant performance issues. So it kind of makes sense they would want to discontinue support for older Mac Architectures because it would be a lot of work and it would be expensive.

I didn't really do much research on how to get it to connect and sync to modern computers, and I started panicking since it was more expensive than I wanted it to be, yet still the cheapest option I'd seen one for in a while. Knowing that I can still connect it to Windows computers is awesome, and I'm not really as worried anymore. I guess now I gotta buy those connectors and see if there's a way to get access to an older form of iTunes that still allows 1st gen connecting.

You can totally access and copy music from the original ipods on windows computers. If your ipod shows up as an external drive in windows explorer, go into the folder settings and select "show hidden files" and after going through a couple folders you'll find all your music scattered across several folders labeled "F" followed by a number I believe. Your music won't be labeled in any way that you will recognize but they will play in any music playing software as long as they weren't purchased through the itunes store. I used to have a windows utility that would go through all these files and correctly rename them. I think they're all renamed as 5 character HEX names (not sure though). The ipod xml system has it's own way of organizing everything.

The classic iPod communication protocol is just via the storage interface. iTunes doesn’t really see the iPod as anything but a hard drive with a couple of specific files on the drive. Supporting the USB iPod classic etc means also supporting the FireWire ones, and I think even the iPod touch and iPhone still use the same basic mechanism.

So intime I guess I forgot about this channell. So recently YT started recommending ur vidz again and I got back into it. I gotta say that aI am pleasantly surprised by rhe growth of the channel and the obvious improvement of your videos! Like the production quality elevated, the topics are very interesting on almost all the episodes, rhe way you act in front of the camera has definitely lightened up in a positive manner, the stuff you dind and present is always some niche or rare types of models and also the "journey" to making them work again is very enjoyable( and educating) and entertaining. So in a nutshell I was saying that it's been a long time since I used to watch ur videos regularly and( most of them were OK) but now revisiting this channel after a few years I see a big improvement in the content! Pretty much all the videos are exciting and entertaining for me to watch and I don't miss a thing! 🎉😊 Sooo, yeah...didn't expect to be writing such a long comment but it came to me spontaneously. When Apple split the MacOS version of iTunes into 3 programs they just moved each function into seperate application files and move formatting into the MacOS finder and even on the windows version of iTunes, some of the folders that the program uses still references "Apple Computer" and folders from updates to the program after the company name was shortened to "Apple Inc." just say "Apple" - an example of this would be the %appdata% folder on Windows.

There was actually a time roughly 4 or 5 years ago where Apple had actually stopped allowing the older iPods (5 and lower I think) to stop syncing to iTunes and iTunes wouldn’t recognize them. The computer would recognize them as an external hardrive. [this was this way on the Mac, and very similar to your experience on the PC, maybe that’s what is going on with the PC. That  never updated the software to allow “compatibility” again. *in air quotes because it is literally a limitation added to the code of iTunes by  and was on both Mac and PC at one point.
