Awesome beginning with the static, ostinato-like passage. The writing for woodwinds seems also interesting. Egk alternates passages that are very accessible, tonally, with some that are extremely harsh (cacophonous, like Ronald B. Woodall says below).

I had just compared this symphony to Boris Blacher's, but I realize, after not hearing it for years, that Egk's is more cacophonous and "over the top" expressively, with a decidedly carnival atmosphere and an outrageous, almost Ivesian, conclusion. Blacher's symphony is a stern, characterful work comparatively "laid back", although its fugal finale generates some excitement of its own.

This is amazingly modern for 1920's Germany(or even for 1920's Germany? ) , more Ives than Hindemith.

A brilliant, but complicated symphony. I'll never listen to it when my wife is near. She'll think I'm crazy. Far too modern for her conservative taste. But I think this is another excellent piece by the this brilliant composer.
