Sherborne Level Crossing

Wednesday June 5 2019 at 18.04. The 15.50 London Waterloo to Yeovil (18.13) train. Alternate trains go through to Exeter but the others can't as, since 1967, it has been a single track line after Yeovil which can only cope with one train an hour each way. Initially the track from here to Yeovil was singled too but that was quickly recognised as being a mistake. This crossing was also filmed in the evening rush hour in 2012 when the road straight ahead was closed. It doesn't show in the film but the town is full of historic buildings. There are 378 listed buildings and that Sainsbury's tower doesn't blend in at all. Sherborne School has been one of the top boarding schools in the country for hundreds of years and a Schools Class steam locomotive was given its name. Coal used to be delivered by train to the gas works here which were by the station. The road is called Gas House Hill. Lifting barriers were installed in 1970 and these are now operated from Basingstoke. As you can see, very few people got off the train and passenger numbers here are static.
