Hi all, thanks for checking out our review and sharing your enthusiastic thoughts. Many of you have pointed out that Jane Schoenbrun's pronouns are they/them. We're also seeing they/she on the filmmaker's official website. Apologies if we've gotten that wrong, we're all just trying to be respectful!
First time viewer: I love the care and leaning into stuff you aren’t personally familiar with. Plus this correction is small but means a lot. Really appreciate you both! 🧡

Alonso, I saw your new book at Barnes and Noble, and I immediately purchased it. I plan to read it during Pride Month, and I can't wait!
Thank you so much!
I felt like such a grandpa watching this movie. I don’t know if it was my particular theater, or the way the actors spoke, but I couldn’t hear a damn thing any of the characters were saying. They speak in this weird monotone whisper that drove me nuts
Nothing wrong with you, it’s the movie which is shitty
As a trans woman, im kinda fascinated by the way they make movies about like these trans cliches that never get discussed outside of our community. World's fair is distinctly about exploring a digital identity as a means to come out and this one is very much about that one friend we all kinda had that bullied us to begin our transition and an understanding that transitioning is the answer not the horror. Also, just impressed at how singularly trans their movies are. It just feels so utterly kind and I am so wished I had them as a trans kid.
Thank you for sharing your experience! Glad this spoke to you.
A24 has really grown to be that new and unknown upstart to a studio with a great rep for making interesting films, it is a logo I always keep an eye out for.
Sidenote: the Pink Opaque is a Cocteau Twins comp from the mid 80s. Given the musical flourishes on this soundtrack i feel they are connected
I've been watching these two for many, many years. I'm a lifelong fan. Just have to say that hearing Christy talk about her son as he grows up and how she interacts with him regarding film is so delightful. He is probably a really lucky kid. It would make for a fascinating book how he was raised with film as a part of his upbringing and development.
Same. I've seen every what the flick video that exists I think.
Hey, it is so nice to see a review from someone who understands they didn't get everything a movie has to offer on the first pass and views that as a positive thing - I think there's a richness here for viewers to dig into. I can see why it would bounce off some people, but I thought it was great and am already planning to go back for seconds.
Let us know what you come up with the second time around!
This film was amazing. I found it to be about escapism and queer identity. I thought the ending was heartbreaking, but it mostly made sense. I agree with Alonso that I need to watch it again because there’s so much going on I probably didn’t even catch everything, but I loved it. Definitely one of my favorite films of the year so far
This looked intriguing, I’ve been interested to check it out. My theory is that Justice Smith and the other characters are a part of the show, somehow they escaped, and the show is calling them back home. Very A24, very contemplative. Great review guys.
That is a really interesting theory!
@@BreakfastAllDay HI Christy or Alonso! Thanks for the shout, been a fan for a while, as far back as WtF! I appreciate the recognition from people I admire and where I’m at rn in my life, I needed to hear that. I’ve got big things in my court rn (just moved to a new apartment a few days ago) and I’m a little anxious. Thanks for making me feel seen. My best to you guys (Christy et all, Alonso:Dave) take care of yourselves in this world. You bring light, especially for someone like me. Take care
@@grantgilbert2822 Thanks for the kind words and for sticking with us for so long. Good luck with everything!
@@BreakfastAllDay thanks guys. Look forward to what you have in store
way too relatable. wanting to wake up from what you know deep down is real
@BreakfastAllDay, Any chance we could get a spoiler talk for this one? I cannot stop thinking about it. Saw it yesterday afternoon and going back on Sunday. What a film. So much going on. I'm pre-ording the blu-ray as soon as I can. Just revisited World's Fair the other day and this is such a major level up (but I liked World's Fair a lot, too). I will fall for any director who uses songs effectively, and I really fell for their filmmaking here...the Lynch and the Cronenberg of it all, the tenderness and care of the trans elements, and this fascinating take on the entertainment we bond with and our relationship to it. The performances are phenomenal. Easily the best thing I've seen so far this year.
Hi Christy! Hi Alonso! Great to see you guys. Hope you’re well.
Hi Grant! Glad you're here.
Even though I couldn't stand World's Fair, I'm actually interested to see this... too bad it's coming out when I'm abroad. (Gotta miss a one-time local screening of Aggro Dr1ft too, smh.)
You missed A24’s All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt last year. I’m still waiting for it to hit streaming.
It's been available to watch for like 6 months.
@@jamk2668 It’s been available to *rent* for six months. I don’t pay for streaming services so I can pay extra to watch movies before they drop on my streaming services.
This definitely has a Creepypasta feel to it.
"The Bronz." Oh wow, now you're speaking my language. sigh, this is totally sounds like something special.
I saw it yesterday with my daughter, I didn't understand every plot point, but we loved it, we couldn't stop talking about it for hours. Don't drink the Luna Juice!
Love having those kinds of conversations afterward. Thanks for sharing!
Really great convo!
Thanks Daniel!
Good review. I feel like it’s a movie where’s audiences are going to very ambivalent about depending on one’s interpretation. But I can’t wait to see it.
Also, a correction: Jane Schoenbrun is NON-BINARY. They use they/them pronouns.
Thanks Mike, Jane's website says pronouns are they/she. We've seen both. But we're always trying to be respectful :)
@@BreakfastAllDay Okay, fair enough. If the website says so then I’ll go with it.
❤Tuesdays here!
This definitely qualifies as Arthouse Tuesday 😄
Driving up to Chicago this Saturday to see it
Awesome, let us know what you think!
Excited to see this! I also need to catch up on World's Fair. Just an FYI, Jane Schoenbrun uses they/them pronouns!
Thanks, Jane’s website says they/she.
@@BreakfastAllDay ahh, their twitter says otherwise!
Hilarious
This is about fan culture in the 90s and heavy nods to the X-files community- and why people developed obsessions over these shows...the 'mythology' and 'monster of the week' - Xfiles created those ideas
Did you enjoy the movie?
@@BreakfastAllDay yes, I did. I could really relate to it.
Really looking forward to seeing this. I was intitally befuddled and ultimately fascinated by *_We're All Going to the World's Fair,_* so I'm very excited to see where Schoenbrun is going next.
This movie is basically Shoenbrun with a much bigger budget
No wonder I did not like it... not a David Lynch fan.
Several times, I'm talking to myself - "please don't end here..." or "so, what is the point of that scene"?
Please do a spoiler discussion if it ever gets wide release.
I thought it would be like a Stranger Things or Five Nights at Freddy's. My mistake.
Yes Lynch vibes are all over this. I'm a Twin peaks fanatic so I liked it thankfully. The director is a big fab apparently.
Pick a scene that doesn't make sense to you and it will probably be full of important meaning that went right over your head sadly.
So much of this film is meaningless without a larger meta understanding of the existential purpose.
The Matrix was a metaphor for society and even transness but if it's just random sci Fi to you then that's half of the importance. Fury Road is about patriarchy and capitalism etc.
I was on board until Christie mentioned David Lynch. Not a fan. Still, I'm intrigued.
Don't watch Inland Empire if you don't like him haha.
I can't stand David Lynch. Mulholland Drive made absolutely no sense to me.
However, I loved I Saw The TV Glow, and it made perfect sense to me. Seemed like a pretty straightforward trans allegory.
Alonzo lol😊😄
I didn’t love Worlds Fair. This looks better, like Channel Zero. Style def looks cool.
No end house was amazing.
thank you for reviewing this one. i had the chance to see it a few weeks ago and was really impressed. LOVED the actors
Thank you for watching! We're glad we saw it too.
Yo, you must be joking saying this is the shitty movie
Alonso’s convoluted explanation suggests this movie is trash.
Hey Alonso and Christy, I noticed you used She/Her when referring to Jane. I believe they are non-binary and use They/Them pronouns. Just wanted to share! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Matthew, we address this in our pinned comment.
@@BreakfastAllDay My bad! should have read the commend before commenting myself. 😊
I’m obsessed with this film! I found it deeply affecting and gorgeous and refreshing. I’ll be rewatching it soon, it’s definitely among my favorites of the year
9/10
Not sold
I didn’t like this. At some point can you just say what you wanna say?? The metaphors just make me 😒
There’s no metaphor too 😂
there definitely is…? Like the whole film is such a metaphor
Didn't like this directors furst feature at all despite good critics reviews.
Dreary stuff. It’s normal for everyone to hate themself and feel alone but this was too much
The hell was he saying this whole time? This was not a movie review. I don't konw what the hell this was...come on Alonso I get that you do this all the time but you need to have some clear thoughts on a film before you just ramble
I liked the movie a lot. Well made, well acted, well shot. Great score and soundtrack. Very imaginative.
Hey Alonzo, it's okay to say you didn't like a movie. This "I don't understand this, but young people love it, so it must be great" stance makes you just seem completely desperate to stay relevant. Embarrassing.
What a crazy thing to write
I don’t know, after the movie about the aggressive politely black people I don’t trust this actor anymore
This was one of the most frustrating movies I've ever seen.
How so?
I wouldn't go that far but it was quite frustrating. It felt like it was very personal to the filmmaker with zero interest in appealing to anyone.
@@crimley9482 those are my favorite kinds of films. i felt like i was truly seeing the world through someone else’s vision
@@crimley9482it’s very personal, but it captures something personal to many people, often marginalized and lonely people. I understand it’s not for everyone, that’s very fair. But tell me, what movie like this would be? How do we capture trans longing or weird generational culture in an accessible film? Scarcely does a film for a wide audience ever achieve that.
Skill issue
Another independent film that is intriguing and interesting... for a while, until it isn't. It just falls apart completely in the final 15 minutes, and you're left with a feeling of "Ugh, what could've been."
I won’t watch anything w that actor, just do not like anything about justice smith and to have a 28 yr old play a 14 yr old how was he cast or cast in anything. Must have an incredible manager.
He got punchable face. Why is he in everything.
If you watch the film. The age goes upto 40 or 50ish its not a 28 old playing a teen at a s9ngle age. its a 28 old playing the whole? Life of a character.
Because of the directors, the original The Matrix has been retconned to having a trans message in it somewhere, but don't see it at all.
a quick note, Jane's pronouns are they/them!
Thanks Tomas, Jane's website says pronouns are they/she. But we're always trying to be respectful :)
@@BreakfastAllDay ooh I understand, I just went with what I've seen based on their twitter profile and posts.
You must have a ton going on!
@@AgentGordonColeHa ha.
Pronoun schronoun.
The DUMBEST, most BORING and DEPRESSING movie I ever ''tried'' to watch...actually ''struggled'' to watch. Film makers are on drugs. This made no sense and belongs in a mental ward on TV night. Characters are always depressed to the point you either wanna turn this movie off or commit suicide. Couldn't even make it halfway through this thing, whatever it was.
I really disliked this movie. It literally got on my nerves.
What about it annoyed you?
I may not fully understand the movie but that was the worst movie I think I ever watched
Her films are unwatchable
Get back in the kitchen, right?
Worst movie I’ve seen in a while
Oh no, what didn't you like about it?
This movie was terrible. Don't waste your time.
i absolutely loved it!
This movie was absolutely horrible
This is the problem. Another movie that no one asked for, no one wants and no one will see - beyond the LGBTQ crowd. Then this will be dumped to Max or something and we’ll get the Pride Month menu of movies you can’t bypass without clicking through the wall of content. Force the agenda on someone else. Make movies fun again. Thank you.
You’re awful
Why are you crying?
You must be miserable
@@billpreston8408because it’s sad and tragic.
No one's forcing anything on you... you can just not watch the film.
