Here is my theory: Back in Dec 25 2001 Matthew and her big sister Katie both got killed by their drunk father, In 2002 they both woke up in a show called Max and Ruby. In the first episode, we find out about the two children that have been trapped in this show. In the second episode we see how the children feel so lonely and that know one found out what happened, but then Ruby/Katie found Max/Matthew In the shower with a noose around his neck, then Ruby/Katie started remembering why they ended up In this show and she was seeking out for revenge. In the third episode we see that even if they're both stuck In this show, Ruby/Katie will always be there for his little brother, and we also find out the real names of the kids and the date of when they died. And In the fourth episode we can see Ruby/Katie started feeling very lonely after the loss of his brother, she just wanted to go home, she felt like the dark started swallowing her insides, which explains why their eyes are black, this could also mean that their father starting gouching their eyes out with his knife.
