The term 'Touchdown' does come from requirements to score a Try in Rugby. American Football was modified by US universities from Rugby to include helmets, pads and the down rule, as they were scared by how rough and dangerous Rugby was, so the introduced these elements to make the game safer.

The first rugby player you need to check out is Jonah Lomu
This dude was an absolute freak of nature and many consider him the GOAT. He actually got offered NFL contracts but turned them down to play rugby.
The video you should watch is called 'Jonah Lomu - Lord of the Wings'.... it's definitely the best video of him on TH-cam.

    • @handsolo1209

No, the first thing they should do is watch some match highlights to understand how the game works, then do some player videos. Lomu is of course not "the GOAT" by any means, but has the greatest aura of any player who ever lived.

    • @Youre
      @Youre 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@handsolo1209 He is the GOAT by some means - eg. global impact, ball in hand running.
He wouldn't be top 5 on my list, but he's unquestionably the best player to watch highlights of for a newby.
I don't think match highlights would be as entertaining for them... maybe after they get more into it.

@@Youre I agree that some people see him (a RL sized player) in the amateur era and see him truck part timers and think he is the greatest, but if you asked any NZ fan to name the greatest All Black of all time, you will hear Dan Carter or Richie McCaw. I think Lomu was a very good player who came along at the perfect time (was about to switch to RL until Union allowed pros), was up against "big" guys then who would be totally out muscled by players like Dupont & De Klerk today and it was at the point where Union was being shown on TV a lot more than it had been. His aura of running over players for fun coupled with the fact that he was a good guy off the field just adds to his mythos. I loved the guy, but massively overrated (probably because he passed away much too young is part of it).

In a ruck you are not allowed to go for the ball with your hands unless you were the first arriving player after the tackle and ruck hasn't been formed yet.If it forms you have to le go of the ball and if you want to steal the ball you must push the opponent over (not allowed to come in from the side either)

Rugby Union allows 15 minutes for half time. No breaks for Sponsors. 3hrs for a televised N.F.L match. Seriously?? 😲😕

"If a team can keep the ball for the entire game 'they generally will'" is maybe the glibbest comment I've ever come across. Having followed the game as player, fan and watcher in general for 57 years I have never seen, heard or read of a team that managed "to keep the ball for the entire game". If you have a big mismatch between teams in terms of power, skill, speed, smartness they may dominate possession and territory; but that is true in almost any game.

The Try used to be 3 points (tri) years ago, when the game was initiated. The points rules changed to motivate players to score more with tries, and less scoring on kicks. It just makes the game more entertaining to watch and challenging to play.
So, the try is now a 5 pointer

To get a true appreciation for the game I suggest watching an old game on youtube (full game). Once you see how fast paced and non stop the play is you will be amazed!
I suggest an "All Blacks" game (as the Haka always puts me in the mood for a game of Rugby).

I enjoy watching your reactions, but that was just some basic rules, there are alot more rules that go into the game, and I would suggest watching a full game from teams like south africa, new zealand, england, australia, always some good matches especially world cup semi finals and finals. cheers from a South African boy over in North America not knowing anything about NFL so I know how you feel.

Doug Flute was the last NFL player to score a dropgoal/field goal in american football, in his final game. Before that one hadn't been scored since the 1940's.
There is an obscure rule in american football that allows you to kick a goal from a fair catch. A similar rule existed in rugby until the 1970's.

Cheers boys from NZ. Rugby like Football is a physical but awesome game. Please refrain from rugby greatest hits reaction videos because it doesn't really portray rugby. Learn the rules and maybe watch a game. Rugby is a massive international sport.

I think it is important to understand 'offside'. Wherever the ball is, this defines a line across the pitch behind which the attacking team must be behind. Likewise the defending team must also stay onside, that is, behind the offside line as defined by the ball. Passing the ball forward is - in fact - playing the ball to a player who is 'offside'. Kicking the ball, all the player in front of the kicker are all offside and they must go back behind the ball, or until a player who was 'onside' behind the kicker, runs forward and passes the offside players - who now are onside :). You will see that at lineouts and scrums the 'backs' will always line up 10 metres behind the scrum 'back foot' and line out (apart from the scrum half of course) - that is, where the ball is.

Rugby? I think not. I think you might mean Rugby League - a different game with different rules/laws (though some are the same) and most notably, fewer players. I prefer Rugby. Real Rugby. Rugby Union, the truly international game. More subtleties and intricacies in Rugby Union, rather than simplicity of bash-and-barge brute strength and the predictability of tactics that dominates Rugby League games. For those who might not know, Rugby League was developed from Rugby Union but with simplified rules being used in the new game of Rugby League, for those who are unable to cope with complexities and subtleties in their lives. Draughts/checkers (RL) versus chess RU).

Rugby Union is quite different from Rugby League which is a whole lot faster paced and arguably more exciting. Like gridiron, each side gets 5 tackles in general play which may reset if the other team is penalized. Rugby Union is like chess though not as complex as gridiron plays and Rugby League is essentially checkers. Their historical differences came about when the players of the lower class or would-be professionals formed a league to earn a living and in doing so modified the game to draw more audience though not as popular over the years. Union remained amateur for the most part and gained more popularity by default throughout some British colonies. Rugby union players tend to earn more with European clubs paying the most hence a good portion of the lifespan of players from both northern and southern hemispheres is spent in British and French rugby championships. Last but not least, we have Rugby Sevens which debut in the Rio Olympics and is the code to draw more people due to the limited players, shortened game time and rapid game play. It is an abbreviated form of Rugby Union and gaining notoriety.

I wouldn't say league was more exciting to play or watch. The hits might be a bit bigger, however it's very repetitive and there isn't the nuance of union. I say this as someone who's played both codes
