With hooks I personally always go by style, size, gape, gauge of metal used. Never go for the cheap and cheerful quality and reliability are key. Unless you are confident in your quality of hooks then you are wasting your time and materials before you even start. Be it Fulling Mill. Partridge. Kamasan. Or Hanak. Without starting with a hook you can trust? Why even bother? Once again thank you for your many years of amazing content in our art. You inspire all of us to grow in our own journey. Both behind the vice, and on the water.

It’s simple when it comes to hooks use made in Japan only hooks, Tiemco, Daiichi, Gamakastu and Fulling Mill. I only use Fulling Mill hooks when I have to fill and order and can’t get Tiemco and customers don’t mind.
I Stay away from the cheaply made Chinese hooks like Firehole sticks, Ahrex, Hanak, Mustad (unfortunately), and Hends, I have had all these hooks fail, I’m not talking about bending I taking about them actually fracturing.

Stages of fly tying addiction: When you start fly fishing, you get catalogs to see what flies to buy. Then you start tying and look at the catalog for the feather porn. Then you add looking at materials and in the final stage, you get hooked. ;-)
    Thanks, Davie.

Thanks to Mr. McPhail😊 for walking us through these materials. It’s very convenient for Fulling Mill to have their hooks pictured to scale.
I still have a ton of the old Mustads left over from my time as a semi professional fly tier but I am replacing them with FM barbless as I run out.

Man seems like you were missing in action and hadn't had a notification in awhile. When I saw the video on fulling mill hooks I was just looking through TH-cam and there it was. No notification at all. I really want to have some grasshopper tied so I'm trying to send you an email 💯💯💯💯💯💯👍🏾

I've be looking for a good fly patch for my vest. Sadly that one doesn't show on the USA website yet. And has FM completely done away with bronze hooks. I refuse to tie a black fly on a black hook as it effects the impression of size.

Thanks Davie. My wife calls it my 'Drooling Mill' catalogue on account of the amount of time I spend looking in it. I get one in the post each season just for being on the mailing list. It's something I really do look forward to receiving. As you say it's a great resource for fly patterns and there is stacks of useful stuff in there too. Almost like a free book. I find their hooks fish and tie as well as anything else I've tried. Super reliable and exceptional quality.

Hi Davie. Thanks for the video. The FM catalogue dropped on my doormat unexpectedly in early January (I have bought plenty of hooks from FM - your fault of course - at least that's what I tell the missus;-) The 135 pages are an absolute pleasure to browse through. The choice of flies and image quality is amazing and the hook guide will stop me from making silly mistakes again in future (hopefully). Last year I bought some FM-5130 Jig hooks in size 8 - thinking they would be around the actual 16 - 14...but no they are massive. I wonder what you could use these for? Freshwater Marlin? Maybe a challenge for you to tie up a pattern so I can use some of them up?! 🙂

      Hi Iain,
I think there's going to be a lot of good ladies out there that will clip me round the ear which I don't mind, anything to help my fellow tyer...😂..I've not got these hooks but I did have a look on their website and they say they are suitable for tying streamers and large nymphs like stoneflies and cased caddis and that they are Ideal for slotted beads, sizes 2mm - 5mm. Iooking at them and the size I would tye zonkers and woolly bugger flies on them as well..I'm glad you liked the video..
      All the very best Davie

Davie. Thanks for this. I had made a comment in a previous video regarding their numbering system. I’ve looked into it a bit and it just makes no sense… that’s not to say any hook mfr numbering makes much sense. It would be nice to have the code they used for the various series hooks.

      Hi @coasterbrookie,
I remember your comment and you were one of the reasons I did the video as I do get asked about the hooks a lot so as you may see by the comments and views many have found it very helpful so thanks for asking as this helps everyone including me...
      All the very best Davie

They dont do well with American fishermen. We want barbed hooks. We dont buy anything metric. And now their sizes are different than the standard. Dont want nothing to do with that.

I see Fulliing Mill hooks everywhere in the states, East, West coasts and everything in between. I think people are getting away from barbs, honestly.

    • @coasterbrookie
      @coasterbrookie 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

They do fine with American fishermen. I don’t want barbed hooks anymore. Sizes are very similar… to me, the sizes are not any sort of gating factor.
