Many years ago, I went to an Urban Outfitters and while window shopping extremely overpriced clothes, I heard this hypnotizing sound. I couldnt figure out if it was, a guitar, a synth or a voice sample. Then I heard this sort of suuuuper reverby wet voice almost incomprehensible, jump on the song. I wish I could have afforded a phone with Shazam at that time, but instead I had to swallow my "coolness" and ask one of the workers there if she knew what was the song playing in the backround. She replied "Oh, I think it's My Bloody Valentine" That night I listened to every single record of theirs I could find on the internet. It changed my life.
By the way the song I heard that day was "I Only Said"

hey that's so funny you say that. for those of us who were into it at the time, it was really bc we felt that we just weren't being represented by the crappy spandex and big hair bands of the late 80s, so we definitely felt like WE were born in the wrong place and time. There wasn't much music like this around. At all. Creation and 4AD were doing some really incredible stuff and if you look at the longevity of Primal Scream you'll understand why the history of rock matters ; ) stay cool xoxo

Their music transcends time. It's like nothing else. The music in the charts today is completely irrelevant. I saw them in 1991 on the Loveless tour in Newcastle. I was 18. Now I'm 48 and if anything I appreciate the soundscapes even more.

Story goes that NME held a readers' poll at the turn of the century to name best album of the 90s, and they chose MBV Loveless. The editors worried, however, about celebrating a relatively obscure pick and used their executive discretion to name Radiohead's OK Computer instead.

When I lived at my parents' house I would normally play anything from the Cocteau Twins to the Voivod, from the Public Image Limited to Enya via the Led Zeppelin and Siouxsie And The Banshees.
While going on about her domestic work my mother heard millions of hours of my music but never commented, not even if I would play the Extreme Noise Terror or the Discharge, except on one occasion only: I played My Bloody Valentine and she replied "Whoaa! What Is This Noooooise?"

Had intense ringing in my ears for five days after witnessing MBV in 2008, it was worth it. I heard their gigs were at around 130 decibels, or approaching the levels of a jumbo jet taking off. The Red Cross were there handing out earplugs, only time I've seen that.
EDIT: I should have said that it FELT like it was worth it when I was a teenager. Hurting your hearing is NOT cool. I damaged my hearing at another concert to the degree that I had hellish tinnitus for half a year. I'm not encouraging that.

    • @ashleymonday298
      @ashleymonday298 4 ปีที่แล้ว +101

Usually the shows sit at about 100 to 110 decibels until the last half hour or so dubbed "the holocaust" by fans. A wall of noise that hits about 130 to 150 decibels depending on the venue. You absolutely need earplugs.

I was just there, resting below a tree, appreciating nature and the blue sky of that sunny day, through the chaotic beauty of this album. Sean Cox epitome of esoteric.A beautiful wrinkle in time that can't be replicated and should have ended with the world tour. As I now look back the band as a whole was genius Shields genius proved not with last release he no longer possessed creative ability, sticking to same formula of loveless exposing a pitiful weakness and tarnished genius. When adding everything up it damaged them greatly,Once thought of as legendary to not anymore. But I digress. K.S. Is no guitar God, legend, or genius.. creating a technique producing tones/sounds uheard before. He and the band created breathtaking,exciting,moving,life-changing, brill. music of great beauty. A decade or so later he cheapened it made it less than spectacular and left us feeling duped, confused and a sense of loss and grief. Left wondering what the fuck happened.

Johnny Thunders Fuck are you talking about dramatic nerd? Yeah, MBV used the same formula as loveless but that formula is timeless, and the album is arguably better. Listening to sounds such as this make you feel as though it feels timeless. I feel it doesn't matter if you were born in the wrong decade or not, all that will matter in the end is how that sound connects to you on a spiritual level.

When I was into H on my last merrygo round, I used to put Only Shallow and this track on as I prepared my fix. As soon as it hit, the music just becomes background sound and you miss out as your brain is flooded with dopamine and you lose interest in music.
Becoming sober and hearing this music properly again is a truly beautiful thing.

Thank you so much for the 4 people who gave a thumbs up to this comment. If you know who I am or not. This was a life altering song. Most of the music I have truly loved, from that time period, still exists. Almost everything since then is a flat affect deathscape of a world. In my mind. Caused by THEM. The small hats. I don’t care about anyone anymore. The people using me as a testing lab rat have ruined any ability I ever possessed to love or emotionally appreciate anything. So, I SAY FUCK THEM and I HOPE THEY DIE IN HORRIBLE PAIN, MOTHER FUCKERS. If I ever get the chance, I will ensure a slow painful “Shogun” death for them.

I think that a large reason that MBV didn't obtain the success that they deserved, if they wanted it, is because of the airy vocals that were probably more about feeling than lyrical depth. That's what I love about them is that feeling of musical luminosity that they give to the listener. It's almost like shooting heroin in your ear while peaking on acid. Not this song, but "Sometimes" just makes me want to melt through the speakers into their world. And I do

Teenage love tale to this album.
It's 1991. I am 17 in small town New Zealand. Friends and I have loved the previous MBV album and EPs. I work at a tapes and CDs shop on Friday nights, and when this album comes out, our shop doesn't stock it.
So, on my dinner break I walk the few blocks to the other music shop in town and quickly find it on cassette - the cover is red. I hand it over at the counter and the girl working there says, "It's great." "You've heard it?" "Yeah it's great."
We phone each other later, and pretty soon we are driving across town at night to leave notes for each other. Teenage love that I'll never forget, and this album I still love just as much.
M, I hope you're out there. It was awesome with you. J
