This is a fantastic lecture! Thanks for uploading.
If one looks at ancient education systems without prejudice, it is easy to see that Brahmanical education system is the only one with clear goal and sense of purpose. Since it was done in very small batches, gurus had to be very selective in which they accept. Given such, they would only accept those students who grew up in suitable environment and would go to live in suitable environment after education to propagate knowledge. Even today, Stanford gives preference to kids whose parents were Stanford or other reputed univ graduates. Same reason. And because they were the privileged ones to get education they were not allowed to monetize as a balancing measure.
Both Buddhism and Jainism sounds like watered down education (although much supreme to what we learn now) so the then shudras have a chance to get educated. But I don't know what was the value of such a education for the fsmily, as they won't learn the skill of their father and becoming a monk won't improve the conditions of their families or society at large.
It is easy to see how Islam and Christian education is watered down to such an extent that besides belief one needs no further skill or ability. The aspect that leave everything to Christ, church will feed, only do God's work - leads to absolute lazy and intellectually diminishing society that is super protective of their status-quo.
Like with all cases, there will be exceptions and outliers.
