Fedor Emelianenko - Sambo & Judo Throws, Trips & Takedown In MMA

  • A study & analysis of the MMA Takedowns of Fedor Emelianenko. Due to Fedors background in Judo & Sambo his takedown game was centred around the upper body clinch and consisted of outside trips, inside leg trips, knee blocks, hip toss and other variations.
This breakdown also looks at his entries into the clinch and the critical aspect of off-balancing that allowed all the takedowns to seem almost effortless.
Overall I highlight the 3 main clinch entries, the main takedowns and the main principles that Fedor used to achieve all these and the lessons that can be learned from his skills.

He was soooo good in his prime... And he was in his prime for a DECADE. Yes, judo, it's pretty evident in hip throws, foot sweeps etc... And combat sambo, COMBAT sambo, back then... A very serious deal. You got Tough.
Even his recent fights, you can see the class of the man. He's no longer the insane pressure machine, as he can't be- the man is a senior citizen in context of proffesional sports. But, now, his distance management is perfect, his anticipation is spot on, he is now a counter striker. And he still packs a black out in his hands.
Truly, one of all time greats.

Fedor is a master of finding slack in the midst of chaos. I love him and everything he brings. I noticed when he winds up somewhere he is just plain intuitive he can make outside forces have no option but to go around. Focusing on weight distribution is just a tiny intro. The dude is an immovable object on command and an unstoppable force on command. Thanks fedor!

Even when he misses the takedowns and trips, he is not in a bad position, and can often break with a strike. Plus he closes the distance using powerful looping overhead rights to #1 score damage if possible #2 clinch for grappling otherwise. He was so explosive. Only pure double leg takedowns by wrestlers seem to work on him, but then he subbed all who he did this to him.

Great breakdown as always! Fedor has to be one of the greatest all around fighters of all time. One part of his game that is very underestimated was his submission game. I bet he has one of the best submission percentages of all time because it seems like anytime he went for one it was a done deal...especially his arm bars.

Fedor is what I consider the best example of succesful judo in MMA.
He was often confident enough in his clinch that unlike other fighters who got rocked and would run away, he would dive forward, clinch and score a takedown while wobbled.

Great analysis of how Fedor executed his clinches! Fundamental judo techniques and concepts that Fedor would probably describe with Japanese nomenclature: Ko-uchi gari (minor outside reap), rather than outside trip; there are many different outside trips, reaps, sweeps, etc. O-uchi-gari (major inside reap), rather than inside trip; there are many different forms of inside trips, reaps, and sweeps. Most importantly, KUZUSHI (breaking balance). He had to have learned these as a child in Judo and Sambo, as they are beginner/fundamental techniques. Love your videos!

Here after hearing Firas Zahabi recommend to watch Fedor if you want tips on how to get Judo to work in MMA. I never realized that Fedor almost never shot for the legs, always took down fighters from the clinch. Amazing!

he absolutely shoots takedowns off of his overhand. he mostly looks for clinch takedowns but he does shoot as well

Not often. Most of these I put under the "Scoop Slam" section.

Good video. That step through with the rear handed punch in boxing is known as a "Fitzsimmon's shift" for those whom might like to know.

Thank you, Sir ! I had heard of Shifting before about stance switching but wasn't sure if it applied directly to this situation, but thanks for the info and I will read up on the Fitzsimmons shift"!

Im pretty sure this music is directly from an old-school porno cassette that i owned in my college years.
Very appropriate (considering that anyone who fought Fedor Emelianenko in his prime got spanked). 😂🤣😆

Haha you are not the only person who says it sounds like porn music 😂 oh well I can't help what people hear but it was actually old school Soviet Jazz and Funk th-cam.com/video/_9cX-i-l9IE/w-d-xo.html

In old school Judo there was striking techniques Atemi waza. I feel that Fedor best represents what a complete judoka looks like

7:50 is an example of what is now known as the cat-dog position in grappling, but done from standing in MMA. Let's rename it Fedog-Cat-Cop.

  • @atshabal

Fedor was a great grappler even though he was more a kind of striker he used his judo ,( Sambo) perfectly without taking high risks. But I think he could have incorporate bjj to even more dangerous but he didn't respect it given that he was crushing bjj black belts until werdum.

More or less in order, these are names given in judo:
Kosoto gake, ouchi gari, sasae tsuri komi ashi, ushiro goshi, tani otoshi and uchi mata
