The yield point is defined as the stress beyond which a material deforms by a relatively large amount for a small increase in the stretching force.
What happens at the yield point?
The yield point of a material occurs when the material transitions from elastic behavior - where removing the applied load will return the material to its original shape - to plastic behavior, where deformation is permanent.
Why is it called yield point?
The point at which the material transforms from elastic to plastic is known as the yield point. The magnitude of the stress at which the transition from elastic to plastic occurs is known as the yield strength. Yield strength is a constant that represents the maximum limit of elastic behaviour.
What is yield point formula?
The yield point is defined by the corresponding yield stress and yield strain. In engineering terms, the work-to-yield is approximately determined by ½ (yield stress × yield strain) because of the rough triangular shape of the stress-strain curve up to the yield point.
What is yield point in tensile test?
The yield point ratio is a measurement of the strain hardening up to the tensile strength. The yield point ratio thus indicates how much tensile stress margin is available in a design/construction until the failure of the material clearly sets in.
Why is the yield point of a material important?
Knowledge of a material's yield strength is very important when designing components, since it usually represents the upper limit of the load that can be applied. Yield strength is very important for controlling many materials' production techniques, such as forging, rolling or pressing
Is yield point and elastic point same?
Elastic limit - the point till which the wire retains its original length after the force is withdrawn. Yield point - the point where there is a large permanent change in length with no extra load force.
What is yield point class 11th?
The point B in the curve is known as yield point (also known as elastic limit) which means till this point the material will be elastic in behaviour and the stress corresponding to point B is known as yield strength (Sy) of the material. The region between O and B is called as Elastic region.
What is yield point physics?
yield point, in mechanical engineering, load at which a solid material that is being stretched begins to flow, or change shape permanently, divided by its original cross-sectional area; or the amount of stress in a solid at the onset of permanent deformation

thank you sir❤ , steel Yield Strength is 448MPa For stainless steel its 520 MPa
You explain all concepts in very simple way
thank you sir! But why we have to remember lower yield point and not upper yield point? as we can see that upper yield point has maximum stress and lower yield point has mini stress, hence are not we have to focus on upper yield point than lower one?

Steels: The yield strength of steel ranges from as low as 220 MPa (hot-rolled A36 steel) to as high as 1570 MPa (4140 alloys, oil-quenched and tempered). Stainless Steels: Yield strength for stainless steel varies between about 250 MPa (austenitic stainless steel) to 1000 MPa (precipitation-hardened stainless steel

Fe 550 D steel ka yield stress 550 N/mm2.
Aise sab ka grade wise steel grade pe depend karega, sir batao yeh sahi hai ya galat. Please reply
Sir apke jaise teacher ho to rocket science bhi asan hojaye
Yield point of steel is 520Mpa
Sir machine design ke time yield stress lekar hoti he ya UTS leke?
Sir what is the difference between yield point & elastic limit ???
1. Elastic Limit:
- The elastic limit is the maximum stress that a material can undergo without experiencing permanent deformation. Below the elastic limit, a material will return to its original shape and size once the applied stress is removed.
2. Yield Point
- The yield point is the stress at which a material begins to exhibit plastic (permanent) deformation. Beyond the yield point, the material undergoes significant and permanent deformation even if the stress is reduced.
- The yield point is a critical parameter for materials, especially metals. It marks the transition from elastic to plastic deformation.
