This team's reliance on Hughes is like the 14-17 Sens reliance on Karlsson. As a Sens fan, some games it felt like the only time they were in the offensive zone was when he was on the ice.
I enjoyed this video. It's nice to get a level headed and well informed Canucks video. I especially appreciated the comment on Petterson. Most guys I talk to think he is trash now and overlook the recent improvements, as well as his defensive efforts. He prevents a lot of dangerous shots with his stick in the D zone.

Kinda hard to play great when your missing Demko Miller Boeser Petterson Huges and Hronek for significant stretches. We've maybe had 1 or 2 games with our whole core? Yeah another top 4 D would help, maybe its needed if were looking at a cup, but this team would be in a much better position if it actually had players.
Oh and also i think there's something to be said about the fact that this team sucks at 3 on 3. Maybe that has something to do with not having alot of top 6 guys and top 4 d but also 3 on 3 isn't a thing in playoffs. If they're 100% in ot I think were talking about a 13-4 team over this stretch? The narrative about this team is defined by 3 on 3 right now, and they're pretty good with more than 6 players on the ice even without their top players.
I think another top 4 or even a 4/5 defender would help. Takes some of the pressure off of Soucy or Myers and gives you more experience. That said I think they should go for some cheaper options. Connor Murphy, Will Borgen, Codi Ceci, Ryan Lindgren (apparently rags don’t love him) and few others are guys you could get for a bit cheaper who would help to just fill out the D-core
@@matthewsmith2237 I'd love to have another top4 D. I also think we're having problems because Soucy is just looking a little less consistent this year which is a real shame considering how he's one of my favourite players. 17 points in their last 17 games in NHL 500, which isn't good enough for a playoff spot... but made so much worse when you know they only won 5 of those 17 games.
Not good enough to make the playoffs but they already had enough wins before that to make the playoffs if they keep going 500 lol still pathetic these last 17 games
I was at the game last night. Canucks played hard but too often they backed away from potential breakaways. Lack of confidence is right and I think it does come from Tocchet being too narrowly focused. Like to see d changes, branstromm, even mcward and definitely more timeouts. Just seems like a lost season unless they can catch fire with hronek and pettersson back.
@@brizzchizz7302Caps building gets real quiet fast when they aren't winning. We're all homers in our building but them booing the refs when Wilson's bs gets offset is insane.

Knob used EDM’s timeout partway through the second during our first meeting this season and EDM proceeded to reset and roll us. Wish someone from the media would press him on this so we could understand his thought process
They need to improve that blueline. It's atrocious outside of Hughes with Hronek injured. All of their D are incapable of skating with the puck or make a break out pass to move up the ice. A lot of the times, they spent an extra 30-40 seconds defending just because of a bad pass. It's been killing them night in and night out. Injuries are one thing, and I think they actually sustained the injuries quite well when it comes to injuries to the forward group. They are able to find different goal scorers up and down the line up with Petterson, Miller and Boeser each missed time. It is the blueline that's been devastating to them. I don't know what Allvin's plan is but if he doesn't want this year to go waste, he needs to pick up another defenseman. Even when Hronek returns, they are still atleast 1 D short and ideally needs 2 more D. Your team won't be winning many games if you have to ice more than one of Juulsen, Desharnais, Brannstrom in the line up at once on a regular basis. And that's exactly what happened since Hronek went down with an injury.
It’s hard to see the Canucks finish higher this season than a wildcard spot. Whether they go far in the postseason, if they qualify, is another matter, however.
I hope they're looking at somehow improving the defense. Ian cole n big z left holes that weren't filled. Relying on a formula that worked last season doesnt work without big z n cole. For defense anyway
Like Hughes said, we haven't even had our full team this year. We're not getting blown out or anything I think the Nucks have a good chance of stringing some wins together here.
The 5-4 ot loss at home vs Seattle was significant on so many levels. Without Hughes and Petterson, up 3 with 5 mins left...... had they won, it would prove that they can win without 2 of their players, whilst hold on to leads. Sample size since has been small, but it doesnt look good, as the talk now is how much they need Hughes to play to win a game. Juulsen, fair or not, was responsible for 2 goals against in the last 3 mins of that game, and should have been be benched the next game. Your right about Myers... my stress level goes through the roof seeing him on ice with a tie game and in the last minute of the 3rd. Worst feeling seeing in OT... but he's been asked to do more than he should under the circumstances.
Yes they can “turn it around” I’m not even worried about making the playoffs. It’s the hard part of the story before the underdogs pull through further than last year
Granted, I don't watch all the games like you do, but as a Caps fan I caught the recent 2-1 OT game. I felt like Logan Thompson dragged the Caps kicking and screaming to those two points and the Canucks put up a fantastic game. The season they've put up so far is respectable and while the struggles of late are cause for concern, I think the injury bug is the biggest factor dragging them down. I like this roster and if they can get (and stay) healthy, I think they should at least hold on to that wild card spot. Whether or not they can make a deep run this year is another question, however. Time will tell!

@@SMA2343 I would imagine they had it drilled into their heads not to take any dumb retaliation penalties after Hoggy took one last game to essentially lose it for us
I mean juulsen did go and give Wilson a push and the refs gave him a penalty for that in OT. Every fanbase thinks their team doesn’t stand up for each other enough right now because they literally can’t. A penalty gets called if you push and shove after the whistle. You have to play these days to what the ref is feeling that night or even that moment and since anything can be called a penalty it feels like teams have become less willing to stand up for players.
IN hockey, you show your grit by INITIATING physicality, not retaliating \ reacting. It has always been better to be the hitter than the hit, never more so than now when all retaliation gets punished.
I appreciate you mentioning the time out thing. Tocchet never uses them and it drives me crazy. I'm starting to think he is not actually a great coach and things just happened to click last year.
In OT, 3 on 3 -- MYERS drives deep into the WAS end, loses possession, and then, defending the counterattack, ALL 3 Canucks chase the puck into the corner -- leaving 2 WAS guys wide open in front. Game over. THAT just exemplifies the kinds of mistakes they make on a regular basis. Seriously doubt they're making the playoffs.
I really like the canucks. I’m a devils fan but I’ve always been fond of Vancouver. Though part of me wants them to fall into a rebuild so Quinn Hughes can eventually come play with his brothers in Jersey
they can absolutely turn it around to become a fringe playoff team. However, this roster needs a major shakeup if you want to compete for stanley cup. The defense will improve when Hroneks healthy and Willander arrives. The top 6 is not good enough and lacks speed to compete with the likes of EDM and COL.
They are in a playoff spot and have not had a full roster, or have even played well. They keep getting those single points, although not optimal, still keeps them in the fight. If the bottom four Big D-men get their shit together as they seem to be doing these last few games they will be fine . They will also get back some players very soon and they will be a lot better. As far as a trade goes, it is going to Boeser at the trade dead line and that is about it for trades. That by the way will kill the season, and probably the team for the next few years. Hopefully they don't make that mistake but is seems imminent.
Half a season left, lots of time to right the ship especially with the team getting healthy. But all sides need to pull their weight: players need to play better (especially our stars), Tocchet needs to correct some coaching strategies (i.e. timeouts, lineup decisions), and if management truly believes in this core, they need to support the players / coach by adding adequate defensemen. The first half has been a perfect storm in all the wrong way,; I'm hopeful it can be stopped and turned around there.
Good game against caps. We outplayed them but that's where it ends. Everything is on management and the coach. The management really screwed this team with signings of mikheyev , lindholm trade, Petterson contract, atrocious work on defence. Even signing of hainen and letting go of podkolzin doesn't male any sense to me. Instead of using money to bring in a good defenceman in a range of 4-5 million they go on and sign forbort, Vinny, hainen, Myers. Why not sign two good defenseman instead of those four is beyond me. Playing any of these defenders over Brannstrom is solemnly on coach. You have one defenseman besides hughes who can carry the play out of our zome but he stubbornly puts Myers and soucy in ot even though they keep costing us games. It doesn't really matter if we make playoffs or not , going nowhere anyway. Would probably be better if we started getting rid of boeser ( floats and is as slow as they come) and a few other once as well. Instead of doubling down on their mistake and going all in like last year, dont do any more trades that will cost us our future. Het rid of all these pylons on defence and bring some guys from Abby, volanin, mcward , and the rest. We're not one or two players away from any kind of contending but probably 4 or 5 and rick isn't doing us any favors with that dump and chase borimg hockey, over playing hughes till he drops dead. All in all usual canucks stuff that's been going on for 50 years.
I feel like its a Tocchet issue this year I dont know why he creates some of these line ups when there are better players available to be there. I dont feel like hes a chill coach either never lets them off the hook for anything which is fine, but not all the time. There is so much speculation but the way they have been playing except for a few players, they have no drive to play the full match. Something is eating away at their spirit and I dont know what that is.
Seems to me that the 3rd period and OT are Vancouver's weakness. If their games ended after the 2nd period they'd be one of the top teams in the league.
Well, canucks are playing with a ahl quality d core. Except hughes. You guys have multiple top 4 defensive players. Schneider, fox , lindgren , miller . Canucks have 1 , and other is injured.
Rangers & Canucks aren't even close. Overtime should be 50/50 with some consistency, Canucks could get on a roll. I can't say that for the lowly Rangers
I feel like as you said our team is in a mental drought awful mindsets going into games. I would love to see a Soucy And Deharnais trade these upcoming weeks for at least a solid D man
"Can the Canucks turn it around?" Answer: NO. Repeat: NO. If by "turning it around" you mean get to Round 1 of the playoffs, that's a very big "Maybe". Beyond that, NO. A very major reason: they have one of the Top 10 Highest Paid Players in the NHL, making $3.5 million more than the other top guys on the Canucks. Petterson is totally failing to deliver goals/assists on a consistent level, and it's hurting the team. His huge contract and the expectations that he will "turn it around" and start playing at the elite level like McDavid, Mackinnon, Matthews, Nylander, Dreisatl and all the other Top 10 Highest Paid Superstars ----- Sorry Canucks fans, but it ain't going to happen. Not this year, not next year, or the year after.
The Canucks were not a playoff team without one Filip Hronek. They are a wildcard team without him now. He devours minutes on the right side. He is the 3rd most important player on the team and the 2nd most important player when Petterson is off his game.
Don't understand the prejudice against Brannstrom. He's not a massive pylon like Desharnais, doesn't (often) make poor decisions in his own zone like Soucy or Juulsen, skates better than any of them except for Hughes and has a decent offensive side. My biggest complaint about Tocchet is his insistence on having giants on the D line. Being big does not mean you are good. Brannstrom needs to be in the lineup more and we are suffering because he's not.
My issue with TOchhet is that, regardless of whether your D are big or not .. .they bloody well need to be able to clear the crease or tie up their man's stick. These guys can't! That's a coaching issue.
The metrics on this team are atrocious. especially late in the game. and goaltending isnt bailing them out. and the career seasons they enjoyed from expected and unexpected places last year have retuned to the average. the good news is that TODAY they are in a playoff spot. but 10 OT losses at the halfway point is gross. bettman loser points are the only thing keeping Calgary back and its not sustainable. The lone bright spot in my eyes is Quin Hughes. i think hes your Norris favourite right now which will likely keep him out of the conversation of any other trophies. Sidenote: media voted on awards are terrible. I do agree that coaching is also below the level it was last year, where everything tochet touched turned to gold. tochet has a pattern and i wonder if we are seeing it again. 6 of the next 7 games are gainst some the leagues best. i think this gets worse before it gets better.
honestly at this point keep things the same till the offseason, don't make any huge trades, try to get a top 4 defenseman but the market is sparce and way too pricey that I don't see it as that worth it since we're definitely not winning a cup this year. If we can make the playoffs in a wildcard spot cool but if we don't then whatever. Next year hopefully 2 out of the 3 of D Petey, lekkermaki, and willander will be playing for this roster full time, and we can at least have an easier time picking up new defenseman and hopefully another top 6 forward. And maybe make a big trade with miller but i'd rather keep both him and petey.
1. They've needed to add on the blue line since the off season but either couldn't find a fit or just ignored it. 2. They have had to deal with injuries, and while every team does, this group and coach haven't been through it before. Huge learning curve. 3. Honestly, the downfall of Carson Soucy is a huge part of this and needs to be studied. He was such a stabilising force last season and has done a complete 180 (not saying it's his fault, but he was a huge benefit they can no longer rely on). Winning hockey is built from the blue line. Solidify the defense and they've proven they can get back to good, winning (in regulation) hockey.
Soucy had a nightmare playoffs where everything found a way a bounce off him and into his net. It hurt his confidence and it's carried over into this season.

I appreciate you mentioning the time out thing. Tocchet never uses them and it drives me crazy. I'm starting to think he is not actually a great coach and things just happened to click last year.
They need to trade Miller and move on..
So Tocchett?
I really like the canucks. I’m a devils fan but I’ve always been fond of Vancouver. Though part of me wants them to fall into a rebuild so Quinn Hughes can eventually come play with his brothers in Jersey
The Wild may have lost the injury lottery, Vancouver was second place. Brutal injuries have not helped
Until trades occur, this will continue. Being healthy won’t put the rumours to rest, and they aren’t rumours at this point.
"But at least they get a point... we'll come back to that" they have so many games that go to over time, if they only won more of them lol
Everyone knows Quinn Hughes is the Quarterback of the team.
Like you Shannon, I have a severe case of Vancouver fan deja vu...
they can absolutely turn it around to become a fringe playoff team. However, this roster needs a major shakeup if you want to compete for stanley cup. The defense will improve when Hroneks healthy and Willander arrives. The top 6 is not good enough and lacks speed to compete with the likes of EDM and COL.
Who would’ve thought the cannots sorry Canucks franchise high PDO from last year would drop.
This jersey is reminding me Jim Sandlak and Cam Neely vibes 🙌
They can if they get past the next few weeks with an okay record
Simple: skate jerseys full time.
Demko to me is akin to ben bishop. vezina level when on their game but gets injured so frequently and therefore is always a question mark.
If they can stay close for another few weeks they will be getting Hrnek and Petey back.
Vancouver "At least we got a point" Canucks smh
Half a season left, lots of time to right the ship especially with the team getting healthy. But all sides need to pull their weight: players need to play better (especially our stars), Tocchet needs to correct some coaching strategies (i.e. timeouts, lineup decisions), and if management truly believes in this core, they need to support the players / coach by adding adequate defensemen. The first half has been a perfect storm in all the wrong way,; I'm hopeful it can be stopped and turned around there.
Crazy 8 of those are ot/shootout loses . How different would it be if they won all of them.
support puck passing up ice to offense zone for scoring chances?
All in all usual canucks stuff that's been going on for 50 years.
lankinen is in an alex auld situation and demko is cloutier injured beyond repair
If the Wings can put together a 5 game win streak. Anything is possible.
Considering how bad nucks have been playing, their record isn't too bad. It just doesn't feel like they are going to turn it around. Hope I'm wrong.
The Vancouver islanders
Rangers have no cap space also, but they still can make the deal
I too like Hoglander. But to me he is helter, skelter, clank, clank.
Boys gotta get healthy
more defense in front of own goal, with coverage on top of puck?
They could really use a defenseman like Gustav Forsling. If only they had his rights at some point.
They have been booed on their home ice “atleast” 12 times this season. Maybe more. That’s another statistic to worry about.
Tocchet doesn't have an extension so he could easily ve shown the door
I feel like its a Tocchet issue this year I dont know why he creates some of these line ups when there are better players available to be there. I dont feel like hes a chill coach either never lets them off the hook for anything which is fine, but not all the time. There is so much speculation but the way they have been playing except for a few players, they have no drive to play the full match. Something is eating away at their spirit and I dont know what that is.
Seems to me that the 3rd period and OT are Vancouver's weakness. If their games ended after the 2nd period they'd be one of the top teams in the league.
The Canucks and Rangers have really embarrassed themselves this year.
Well, canucks are playing with a ahl quality d core. Except hughes. You guys have multiple top 4 defensive players. Schneider, fox , lindgren , miller . Canucks have 1 , and other is injured.
And agreed, Tocchet has nothing to share, its like nobody's home.
That’s a 2027 Winter Classic idea at this point if there’s going to be 2 games lol
@@gorgeousgeorge5173Why bother the media is blood thirsty
Rangers & Canucks aren't even close. Overtime should be 50/50 with some consistency, Canucks could get on a roll. I can't say that for the lowly Rangers
Short A, no.
Not w\o:
A: Getting a head knocking, crease clearing D
B: shipping out the useless Swede on the massive contract Pettersson
Without Quinn Hughes, they’re a lottery team. No wonder why he’s playing with what probably is a bone bruise.
They don’t have the back end depth. And no, I don’t think signing Zadorov would make a big difference.
If they had signed Zadorov, they would have lost someone else due to cap issues and his constant penalties would be causing meltdowns.
No good morning 🫤
The Canucks can totally turn it around. One point at a time.
Sweet jersey
Some players do all the little things right. Sadly Hoglander does all the little things wrong.
Their Captain isn't much of a leader in the locker room.
Friedman would have been good for that game.
We need another top 4 D, not just depth on the blueline. Myers should be a 3rd pairing defenceman, Desharnais should be 7th D man at best.
Now you know, why Edmonton didn't resign him
The Canucks were not a playoff team without one Filip Hronek. They are a wildcard team without him now. He devours minutes on the right side. He is the 3rd most important player on the team and the 2nd most important player when Petterson is off his game.
When has petey been on?
Disappeared the day after Hughes was drafted
Do a video of how many games the Canucks have been playing games with American league call ups. You can't win tight games without nhl caliber players.
If they fail to win tomorrow's game [they've ALREADY failed twice in a row in overtime], the playoff chances will drop down!
It wouldn't happen but Boston could use a guy like miller.
Need to get boeser off the overtime lol he's so slow it's sad, Myers too but for you know why
Bring back big Zed.
this must have been a tough one to do brother.
