The fact that her phone carrier gave out her SIM so easily to a hacker is a bigger problem... if not they cloned the SIM which is much less likely and nearly impossible on newer devices they almost always take advantage of poor security via social engineering their way into the carrier issuing a SIM to them.
Blame the victim? I’ve been in crypto for about seven years I’ve been hacked a few times and I’m as careful as can be I’ve even had hardware wallet hacked. You have to be a lunatic to put your life savings in crypto

Yes coin base customer service is awful. This is the main reason why I couldn’t put much more than funny money there. The banks and brokerages have to get in and hit them with some serious competition

This does make me feel old. I’ll be 74 in about two weeks. I have owned common stocks long term and also speculated short term for about 50 years. I sell puts and calls as well. The use of a computer and iPhone are essential to my practice of law so I have some computer literacy. However, I just cannot bring myself to pay thousands of dollars to purchase a digital space on a computer. I also notice that a Bitcoin is normally depicted as a gold bullion coin in the ads that I have seen. I admit that I don’t know anything about the Bitcoin space. Over the past 5 decades my common stock holdings have grown to several million dollars so I don’t really need to spend the time and effort to develop the confidence necessary to purchase Bitcoins but it’s still fun to watch the digital speculation.
The first problem, sadly, is that most of these young folk don't understand exactly what 'is' money. "Digital space on a computer" is one way to describe cryptocurrency. Another way to describe it is *'electrons'.* That's all it is - a few electrons floating back and forth. They actually believe that a Bitcoin is an actual 'thing' - and apparently are willing to pay $50,000 (per Bitcoin) for those *electrons.* Considering the current cost for electricity, in my opinion one Bitcoin should be worth $0.0000000000000001 cent. Perhaps $0.0000000000000002 if it's a special collector's edition electron. But, hey - this 'is' the generation that grew up on Jerry Springer...... So, I guess it all makes sense.

Cryptocurrency is no different. That said, cryptocurrency's overall value has less to do with it being a currency and more to do with significant efficiency improvements and practical applications. For example, the SWIFT banking system transfers trillions of dollars daily between different institutions, but is absurdly slow at transferring even small amounts of USD - $50k to $100k - taking 2 to 3 hours or more to transfer these funds. Cryptocurrency can do that in seconds and can also do so carrying large amounts of data that can be used to automate supply chain data tracking. The USD will be gone in the next decade and will be replaced by a digital dollar that will not only replace the USD, but will also replace the SWIFT system - the Federal Reserve has stated as much. People are only caught up in the speculation of it because they have no idea what they're investing in. I suggest researching the practical applications of cryptocurrency before making generalizations.

The fact that her phone carrier gave out her SIM so easily to a hacker is a bigger problem... if not they cloned the SIM which is much less likely and nearly impossible on newer devices they almost always take advantage of poor security via social engineering their way into the carrier issuing a SIM to them.
Blame the victim? I’ve been in crypto for about seven years I’ve been hacked a few times and I’m as careful as can be I’ve even had hardware wallet hacked. You have to be a lunatic to put your life savings in crypto

They are not. This is cnbc FUD.
Login info gets hacked monthly just change ur login often or buy a hardware yubikey. Its alot safer also. The hacker has to literally come to ur house to hack ur stuff.

Exchanges can do more like not allowing withdrawals if 2FA is disabled for 24-48 hours and the same if a new device from a new IP is accessing your account. There is more that can be done to stop cyber crime.

This is why regulations are needed and coming. Also why adoption could be faster than it is now. Do you honestly believe the average American is going to have a hard wallets or different keys? Good luck getting someone to sell your bags to.
Regulations are not needed, people need education not restrictions. Regulators want to Bann hardware wallets which is a huge step backwards.

This does make me feel old. I’ll be 74 in about two weeks. I have owned common stocks long term and also speculated short term for about 50 years. I sell puts and calls as well. The use of a computer and iPhone are essential to my practice of law so I have some computer literacy. However, I just cannot bring myself to pay thousands of dollars to purchase a digital space on a computer. I also notice that a Bitcoin is normally depicted as a gold bullion coin in the ads that I have seen. I admit that I don’t know anything about the Bitcoin space. Over the past 5 decades my common stock holdings have grown to several million dollars so I don’t really need to spend the time and effort to develop the confidence necessary to purchase Bitcoins but it’s still fun to watch the digital speculation.
The first problem, sadly, is that most of these young folk don't understand exactly what 'is' money. "Digital space on a computer" is one way to describe cryptocurrency. Another way to describe it is *'electrons'.* That's all it is - a few electrons floating back and forth. They actually believe that a Bitcoin is an actual 'thing' - and apparently are willing to pay $50,000 (per Bitcoin) for those *electrons.* Considering the current cost for electricity, in my opinion one Bitcoin should be worth $0.0000000000000001 cent. Perhaps $0.0000000000000002 if it's a special collector's edition electron. But, hey - this 'is' the generation that grew up on Jerry Springer...... So, I guess it all makes sense.

Cryptocurrency is no different. That said, cryptocurrency's overall value has less to do with it being a currency and more to do with significant efficiency improvements and practical applications. For example, the SWIFT banking system transfers trillions of dollars daily between different institutions, but is absurdly slow at transferring even small amounts of USD - $50k to $100k - taking 2 to 3 hours or more to transfer these funds. Cryptocurrency can do that in seconds and can also do so carrying large amounts of data that can be used to automate supply chain data tracking. The USD will be gone in the next decade and will be replaced by a digital dollar that will not only replace the USD, but will also replace the SWIFT system - the Federal Reserve has stated as much. People are only caught up in the speculation of it because they have no idea what they're investing in. I suggest researching the practical applications of cryptocurrency before making generalizations.

That was when the web and Internet retail was first becoming mainstream, and we were doing some work on PKI and SSL extensions. That's what frames my understanding that Bitcoin is worth nothing more than the electrons that you've sent. There's nothing special about what it enables. And no one in their right mind is about to base a trillion dollar anything on an unmanaged, uncontrolled, no-central-monitor currency.
One different between Bitcoin and the U.S.D. is that the dollar is worth: *a dollar.* Bitcoin's value is arbitrarily set at creation - and that should be the end of that. Who in their right mind would pay $100 dollars U.S. for a $1 dollar bill?!? They wouldn't. But, that's exactly what's happening with Bitcoin (in fairness, you did say it: _"they have no idea what they're investing in."_ ).
Another difference with Bitcoin is this: How much is one U.S. dollar worth? ANSWER: *ONE DOLLAR*

How the hell are you gonna have a _supposed_ self-standing currency whose value is derived/denominated in another currency. And no, it's not the same as other currencies. One cad is worth one cad. One dinar is worth one dinar. You can approximate the value of one cad as _compared_ to one U.S.D. But each has established it's own ecosystemic value, and that's that.
So, if you wanna start a currency and set the starting value at 1 Clowncoin equals that equivalent of one day's pay, then so be it. Stop this madness of tomorrow deciding that the same Clowncoin is now worth 736 day's worth of pay.
