Was it worth ditching the 4.0L V6???
Considering they wanna charge us a mortgage I have to say no
No. IforceMax Powertrain is rough, jerky, shifts rough first few when starting. I donno why too many reviewers suck up to Toyota....
22mpg freeway speeds is pretty great, especially considering the engine isn’t broken in yet. 👍
@@minifunkableI guarantee you haven’t driven one. 😂
I have one paid cash.lil over 63k...it was cheap 2025 land cruiser model. Got many cars bud
lol when you first said I’m being pulled over and then started talking about mpg , I was like cmon bro can you tell us what happened 😂
Hey Jon, this is Pinar who owns the black Land Cruiser at Starbucks. It was a pleasure meeting you guys. Let us know if you need a stock First Edition to compare to your modified one 😁
Jon recording TH-cam video while the State Patrol after pulling him over is checking his driver license and deciding to give him a ticket or not back in his cruiser. My man, that’s another level! 😃. Also, that’s commitment and laser focus on the task. 👍
Thanks brother! Hahah
Cop was probably a new gen hater and wrote you a ticket for only having 4 cylinders
HAHAHAHHA
@@TRDJon😂😂😂
@5:43 It’s crazy how you basically said Toyota quality ended with the 5th gen. We can’t just accept that. Glad for the folks that continuously call Toyota out.
Whats your definition of quality?
I did say all brands. It’s sad
@ it wasn’t a knock on you bud. I agree with what you said, that’s what I was saying was sad.
It's called planned obsolescence. Look it up. Most car manufacturers, including Toyota are 150,000 miles. The last gen Land Cruiser was built for 250,000 miles, but it looks like that isn't the case anymore.
Yup. After I sold my V8 2017 tundra with 140k miles to my brother, I got a 2023 Platinum tundra. Worst mistake I ever made. So many issues with less than 30k miles on it. Constantly at dealer shop for parts to be replaced and recalls. Traded it for a 5.6L V8 Nissan titan pro 4X and boy do I love it! Column shifter and it feels so greatly put together and a lot less plastic. I was no fan of Nissan but I wanted a newer V8 truck that was reliable and the Nissan titans are like the older tundras. Toyota has lost us with this Chinese quality they are producing and it’s over priced plastic. Not worth it anymore.
The 5th Gen 4Runner had support and a rubber gasket under the hood at the base of the windshield. I believe the Tacoma did as well. The new generations eliminated that which is why the hood flutters so much. Car Care Nut pointed it out in one of his videos.
I wonder if you can just buy your own weather stripping from the hardware store and slap it on the same location and it will go away lol
the hood flutter is reported as an issue for every single new body on frame Toyota/Lexus model since the global platform started coming out in 2022: LX600, Sequoia, GX550, Tundra, Tacoma, 4runner, Landcruiser300, Baby Landcruiser (US)
5:40-6:00 is the truth. There are so many reasons why. It isn’t just the V6 and the 5-speed. It isn’t just that they removed the external frame mounted bump stops on the sixth gen. The actual metal is thicker and heavier in the 5. The interior panels are thicker. They spot weld the metal together instead of using adhesive. Even things like the sunshades are thicker and more sturdy. You won’t find a thicker headliner than in the 5th gen. Maybe these seem unimportant, but they go together perfectly with very minimal creaks and rattles. Yes, it’s not the fastest horse in the barn and it drinks gas, but it’s so great for all these other little reasons. I even like the smaller head unit that fits IN the dash instead of the screen protruding into my view above the dash.
Sorry, guess I’m a 5th gen forever kind of a guy but these are my reasons.
Ain’t nothing wrong with that bro. She was built like a TANK.
As a 5th gen owner I really love the window switches up top and now they’re not.
I agree. It’s weird but I liked it
This road trip is Destin to great things for the future!
I had a 06 v8 and man i fricken loved that thing but i had the opportunity to upgrade and now I am in a 2024 TRD offroad premium and let me tell you the 5th gen grew on me so much. At first I was kinda iffy about them but after a year of ownership it has been nothing but awesome. I absolutely love the 5th gen platform and will definitely be keeping this car 15+ years
5th Gen is the GOAT
Jon I just bought my first 4runner. A 2007 limited v8 awesome truck. Congratulations on the new one.
Love that! Congrats!!!!!
I've never had a trip computer that was all that accurate. Funny how when you fill up write the mileage down and then check the mileage at your next fuel up it differs quite a bit from the mileage computer. The vehicle always says I'm getting better mileage than I really am.
Cool that you went to Fred Haas in Houston. Shout out from H-Town! Glad you chose the TRD ORP in Heritage Blue. Beautiful truck.
My Dad bought a Rav 4 LE base at Don McGill in December and got completely ripped off. I think he was sold the vehicle for $46k after putting down eight grand. Hopefully Haas is a better dealership
Thanks for doing this for us, Jon! I'm probably a few years out from getting one, but this 6th-gen has shot up on my list of possible cars to buy, specifically this TRD Off-Road Prem. trim. Keep the videos coming; hopefully, by the end, it'll still be on my shortlist.
My 2002 Sequoia with 275k miles gets 19mpg on the freeway and runs perfect. No way i'm shelling out $60k for this 4runner
My 2004 Tacoma 3.4 L 4x4 five speed manual gets 19 mpg at 187k and drives like the day I bought it in 2012. These new vehicles are an absolute joke and anyone paying these kinds of prices need to get their heads checked
Us toyota owners know the value isn’t there anymore. They have taken the gm/ford playbook route on the cost cutting. LAST TOYOTA
Thanks for the honest review, Jon!
Yes I’m cross shopping hard AF! Thanks John, real Yota guys know.
Yessir!!!!!
My wife’s rav also had that hood shutter. It’s really crazy that for almost 60k you get all that plastic on the door
The 306 miles range was at Ompg when you reset the trip, as you get readings and the computer calculates the range of course the range is going to go up.
Thanks!
Hey, TRD JON, you switch toyotas like Hot Wheels and Matchbox toys😊
He doesn't switch, he adds lol.
@@armen7932 he owned an SR5 Tundra. Sold it for a platnium. Sold the platnium for a 2nd gen. 3rd gen again tbd.
He bought a 2024 taco. He stated in this video its going away.
Most definitly doesnt add.
pretty sure he had a sequioa at one point too. the only car hes kept is the 5th gen 4runner in the garage. Which may be sold in the future. but new video title, "I Sold my 6th gen 4runner for a 5th gen!"
@ You have valid points lol. Right now he has a few different models but others have gone away. I guess that’s the luxury of running a channel that brings in revenue.
I'd like to know what your wife thinks about the seating position and front visibility. My wife at 5'2" can barely see over the long and high hood with the seat maxed out. Worse than any 4R that I have owned. No dual climate controls and hard plastic is a miscue on the 2025 4R at $58K. Looks great and thanks for the video. Looking forward to your build videos.
Wish I could have seen you driving through our town with the new 4Runner. Enjoy!
I like everything about it except the engine and rims. Perhaps the rims will grow on me. We need 20 years to test out this engine though.
At 20 years are we still waiting on the verdict on the 4.0? Lol or the 4.6 V8? 😂 I jest, but that's a bit of hyperbole
@@rc07333 Not at all. The new Tundra is already having engine recalls. We dont know the longevity of these new turbos. We still have V8 4runners on the road so the verdict is in on that. Hardly a hyperbole. Turbo engines with other automakers have proven they dont last nearly as long.
Jon, use off the record to take care of the ticket if you got one. They take care of everything for you, no points and no headache.
Ima look at that!
Idk Jon, for $70,000 I kinda want my car to be solid as shit.
I dunno what kind of shits you’re taking bud but I’d want my car to be a bit more solid than that. (Lol)
This was $55K. But yes would be nice.
@TheEclectic… You need to eat more fiber. This 4R has hard plastics in many points. This ain’t soft touch Limited. 😃
Yeah I have to agree I work hard for my money and I’m spending that much it should be perfect. He mentioned the fender flare pulling away. I wonder if Toyota just rushed these getting them through production a little to fast.
I have a 21 SR5 premium and when I see a new scratch I’m going insane.
70k for missing buttons, hard touch plastics, etc.
Toyota missed the mark on this one.
Your encounter with the cop is a missed opportunity. You have to incorporate interesting incidental content like that. It is interesting to us❤
I don’t wanna be that guy to put cops on blast. They got a job to do.
Hopefully that range adjusts over time as it breaks in. Love the new Forerunner but I am spoiled with my Colorado ZR2 diesel 600-mile tanks. Can't wait for more updates, but the new Forerunner looks great!
That’s one Chevy I would get a ZR2/Bison would be the Duramax.
Same as what i'm getting with my highlander, those are decent MPG numbers. That was my big sticking point on deciding to go with a 4runner next time.
Congrats and I love the color!!!
I watch your videos with pleasure. Your videos are a real treat.🐩🤘🌄
Trolling for only fan subscribers or what?
Thanks for the vid Jon, MAN bummer you got pulled over and a ticket, rough. This gives us some idea of how it's doing for ride/MPG etc., will probably get better with break in too. I did think it sounded a bit loud on some of the highway stretches but it's so hard to say with video. Was that with the DJI, or just audio from the camera? I know the cameras seem to pickup a lot more ambient audio than the DJI mics it seems.
I was using the mic at first but the rest was just the osmo action 5. It’s a great camera but does pic up a little more than it should. It’s a bit quieter
@@TRDJon Yeah the cameras seem to make things feel...louder than they really are for sure. Thx for the info.
Thank you for being so detailed!!!! Habve you tried taking out the portable speakers. Apperently the speaker has issues going back in.
They look good bout it for positive in my opinion. Ill buy a low miles 2024, when im ready to let my 2011 4runner go. She just keeps going and going.
Thank you! i loved FJ's, all 4 of 'em. until i hit the road. Try as i may 4 times, I could not live with a 19 gal tank. so off they all went. Couldn't get from Ft. Lauderdale without hitting st.mary's border crossing in ga without being on fumes, and the cheap Ga gas was inland. so i got the 38 gal Tundra. But, my new Daytona digs would not allow that high hat Tundra into the underground garage. Didn't want gummy salt spray on it all the time parkin outside; so then I discovered the lovely V6 now had a 23 gal tank in the 5th gen runner! so a tip of the hat to your 23 mpg in Gen 6, but I'll keep my 19mpg at 77mph in FT 4wd and a 23 gal tank in the 5gen. Damn thats alot of money for a FJ cruiser interior, i only paid 32k for my last new 2014 cruiser (drove to Chicago for that one) I love my leather seats in chestnut color and chrome trim on the limited....as you said all fitted into as solid as a rock truck. Drivin to houston for a truck, I drove from Daytona to Pittsburgh for my 4runner last November. I haven't bought a SET region Toyota since my 2010 Trail Teams FJ, and I've bought 8 new Toyotas since then. I really like the direct dealing with Toyota in other regions; instead of paying a hundret dollars to SET for the mandatory iphone cables-tax. And you couldn't buy a 4WD Tundra that wasn't flex-fuel in SET. Enjoy your new ride(s). I'm just saddened that with my last of the best 4Runner and V8 Tundra; Toyota no longer offers anything new that I dream of owning (but my Wallet DOES thank Toyota for removing the temptation!).
Fred Haas is where I bought my 4Runner.
it would seem once the issues are worked out of the tacoma its the best bang for the buck in TRD off road trim i think.
Tons of premium trucks, no USB c cable 😂
All hard plastics. Yuck.
Great video, as always...I just wish we could get all these Toyota haters out of the comments! Every single freaking video of all these new Toyotas you've got all these people bitching about the price (and other things of course)....if you can't afford it, fine - just keep it to yourself, nobody cares! These new models are awesome, the engine is great...I love my new LC and I am waiting on the TRD Pro to be delivered...again, there are plenty of customers who are buying these and can afford it, so Toyota doesn't care that you can't! Go buy a Nissan!
Change is hard for sure. Especially after the last model was around for 15 yrs. It will take time to adopt for sure. 👍🏼 thank you for watching!
You should have used a thumbnail of the police pulling you over. 😂
lol right!?!
Great video Jon. I love road tripping except for the revenue generating speed traps in small towns. I've fell victim to them myself.
Anything is more comfortable than Tacoma, that thing is genuine torture device for anyone over 6ft...
Is amazing on how polarizing the comments are on the 6th gen. People need to understand it's a very different world when the 5th gen launched in August 2009. Heck the Nissan Patherfinder was still body on frame in 2009.
I saw a new Land Cruiser was a part of Vegas Toyota Offroad at the PinkBox Donuts drive thru. That thing is HUGE. Thought it was was a Land Rover lol but my wife said it had an iForceNax badge. Looked at the taillights closely and confirmed it was a Land Cruiser. My Armada is just a little bit bigger but still! I’d buy it used lol
Jon, how does the seat compare to the Sequoia seats you had? Re Adaptive Cruise: My wife has a 2024 Lexus RX 350H and I was shocked how good the adaptive cc is. It’s practically self driving. You need to lightly touch the steering wheel but no tugging needed. You can just hold on gently at any point and it follows the lane, speeds up, slows down. Forgot if it changes lane if you signal or not but it is really great. Probably same system in the 4R.
My truck is from Fred Hauss! Nice!
My 24 Tacoma does the same thing with the radar cruise control. It likes to slam on the brakes if someone is exiting on the highway and the taco thinks they aren’t moving fast enough so hits the brakes hard
Long highway trips and constant speed. Isn't that the very thing that Toyota says not to do during the first 1,000 miles of break-in?
No idea.
@@TRDJon Check the owner's manual. Both of my 2022 Corolla and 2023 RAV4 manuals say that.
Well it wasn’t consistent same speed so hopefully that helps. Lol
They'll fix the hood issue with some stoppers. This is why i never beta test the first year after a redesign
How bad is the comfort of your Pro's ISO seats compared to the premium 4R and premium taco? Trying to decide on a mudbath pro tacoma.
Mmmmm I’d definitely prefer the 4R seats for road trips for sure
What did you end up getting a ticket for?
Following
Illegal u turn. With nobody around.
@@TRDJon oh damn.
@TRDJon That's lame! Bored cop.
Is it an aluminum hood? I have a LX600 and the hood flutters quite a bit. Seems to be common with aluminum….
I think it is.
That’s gotta be it. I was u easy when I first saw it on the LX, but got used to it…
Try penzzoil platinum for your oil change and then see the difference in fuel economy
Invest in a radar detector. It's the best investment I've ever had. I've had the same one for over 6 years.
Illegal u turn. With nobody around.
Maybe the first calculation had a greater difference with the vehicle calculation because the tank wasn't completely full to begin with?
I feel it would have been close. They used a fuel tank at the dealership.
I got a brand new 4Runner ORP in 2023 and still very much in love with my baby so I won’t be trading it in any time soon…but I do see myself eventually doing just that….my question is, do the rear seats remove as easily as the 5th gen’s? I’m 5’11 and love road tripping and sleeping in my rig. I remove the 60% back seat and can sleep easily…I’d like to do the same with the 6th gen and if those seats don’t remove(meaning you can’t sleep inside) is a total deal breaker for me
Congrats
The hard plastic at the top of the door panel would be a deal breaker for me. I take long trips and prop my elbow there (like everyone else) . I wonder if there is some kind of after market product that would help?
Went from a 5th gen 4Runner to a 2021 Tundra and a Jeep Wrangler UL. Tundra is too big and the Jeep is too small. I've been watching tons of 6th gen 4Runner videos and Landcruiser videos. I think I'm going with the Landcruiser. The 4Runner just got too soft, complicated, expensive, and less off-road capable. The LC doesn't require chopping up the body to add off-road bumpers and can fit 35" tires with minimal lift.
My 5th Gen 4Runner achieved 21 mpg average on a road trip when stock. This one got 22.6. If you drive an average of 10k miles per year and use regular fuel for the 5th gen at $3.24 a gallon (where I live) and then use 91 octane premium for the 6th gen at $3.62 a gallon, then for a year of driving, the 5th gen will cost you $1542 for fuel. The 6th gen will cost you $1601 for fuel.
So, despite getting better fuel mileage, the use of premium actually makes the new 4Runner more expensive in terms of fuel cost. And the insanely high increase of MSRP means the new 4Runner is a horrible decision economically in every category compared to the 5th Gen 4Runner.
Great trip. I'm so upset that Lexus didn't give us digital rearview mirrors on the Premium plus!!
Where and what was the ticket about?
Driving while too handsome.
@@4gegtyreeyuyeddffvyt
Haha I mean I enjoy Jon’s TH-cam but….
Great vid and sorry about the ticket. So I’m seriously considering a Limited because I need the third row fairly often for the family. Is this a truck that you’re happy to have as a daily driver or is it really more of a dedicated off roader?
What did you get pulled for? I had a 5th gen 4runner trd pro and my biggest complaint was it felt like it needed better acceleration
The fact that the Tacoma and 4runner are basically the same infuriates me. Previous generations the 4runners interior was way different than the Tacoma. The interior looks cheap for the price. Love my gen 4 4runner. Almost 20 years old and my interior looks almost new.
That’s because they are going the same route as the old gm/ford playbook on the corporate quality cut department to save $$$. More plastic than ever and especially the mess you see under the hood of these. Definitely a bad change since the new head of Toyota has taken over. Will be looking at other Japanese brands now for the same $$$
Same screen set up as my Toyota Crown.
Great video Jon! I see that the 4Runner TRD OR got much better mpg than the Tacoma TRD OR even though its the same engine. What did you get pulled over for?
Went on a long trip with my 2020 4Runner on the stock tires and averaged over 22 mpg. Apparently going to a 4 cylinder with more gears didn't improve anything.
Lidar, Radar or pace? Sorry no break Jon. 😢
Illegal u turn. With nobody around.
Slow down and get better mpg. I just picked up a RX350. Same 4banger turbo. I also paid 58k. Such a nice vehicle.
Is the new hood aluminum?
I wanna say yes
Can you race it. 5th gen vs 6th gen let's see wassup with this 4 banger
Yes!
My 2025 Camry's hood also flutter on the wind as well, but then again the hood is quite heavy. So I'm assuming the flutter is for pedestrian crash safety rating thing.
Hood flutter is a signature feature for Toyotas.
My 5th Gen 4-Runners hood flutters a little while driving on the highway
If 70k is a poor man's car, I'm beyond homeless
Is the hood aluminum on this one causing the flutter vs steel in the 5th gen??
I have a Chevy Colorado aluminum hood and it flutters at 75-80mph. Gives it character in my opinion, means you aren’t Sunday driving 😎
Is Toyota keep the sport mode?
Yes
Great video. My 2015 4Runner Limited 4x4 hood flutters like mad at 75-80mph. Does the new gen 4Runner Limited have acoustic glass?
Toyota as a company has clearly changed. When Toyota wanted to be the leader in the luxury vehicle market, Project F1 (“flagship one”) was funded to create the Lexus LS 400. All the new engineering, manufacturing, and testing methods flowed downward throughout the company and Toyota captured significant marketshare and a reputation for quality.
Was there a Project T1 ('truck one') that drove the development of this truck platform that the Land Cruiser and 4Runner share? Back in the good-ole-days, the cost savings were behind the metal where the consumer could not see and the customer facing/touching materials were good to great. @2:26 should not happen for a $50K+ vehicle (check out the Ford Ranger upper door cards). This is a leadership problem at Toyota and is not acceptable.
Ticket for what??
Illegal u turn. With nobody around.
Damn, the wind noise is very noticeable in the video. Also my both of my 5th gens has a little hood movement on the highway.
I think it was my camera. It picks up more that is actually there since it’s an action cam
22 mpg is not too bad considering the 5th gens don't get much better than ~19 mpg.
And it’s breaking in too. I’m sure if I was 65 the whole way it would be even better
Hi Jon, when you said the smells had worn in, did you mean the off-gassing of the plastics of a new car or the off-gassing of yourself by way of fast-food at a truck stop? 😊
I will say even with my 23 4Runner TRDORP I have a hood flutter and window/dash rattles. Nothing is perfect lol.
Are you breaking in the engine by varying the speeds?
Yep
Why did you get a ticket!
?
Illegal u turn. With nobody around.
It’s an aerodynamic brick. The four cylinder in eco mode provides the optimal opportunity for the best possible fuel consumption.
If you want a low fuel consumption Toyota buy a Prius. If you want to still off road lift it and put terrain tires on it 🤣.
Are you sure it made in Japan? It looks like American made tacoma track interior
Yes
The base SR5 wheels look much better
Just curious, how much were you speeding? lol
lol Illegal u turn. With nobody around.
Stock 5th gen can get 22mpg on highwsy cruise
Remember that is with a 5speed and
V6 highlander with 8spd can easily get 25mpg
So those figures are not great considering
Yeah...but will it wheelie?
When is the LX 700H coming to the channel Jon?
Whenever I make more money lol.
I think going straight to the highway for a 500 mile road trip is not a good way to break in the engine.
Running great!
Put it to the test like TFL 😬
These new 4Runners don't have the best fuel economy. If I do buy a 4Runner Trailhunter I won't trade in my Corolla. Better keep
it for daily city driving.
how does closing the door feel compare to the LC250?
when are you going to sell it?
Already sold it lol.
Sounds like you need to get rid of the 250 and get a real Land Cruiser… the 200 is both quiet and powerful
In time
I just don’t like how the 4runner and the Taco are identical in the cockpit 👎🏼
