I have tried heel flap and gusset in the past and I feel like that takes forever lol. So now I knit my socks toe up with an afterthought heel, I use Andrea Mowarys heel placement with the lifeline and then Earthtone Girls shadow wrap heel tutorial, for this heel there is very minimal counting involved 😊
Haha!! It does take quite a bit of time.. that's true. I'm glad you found a method that works for you! Counting is my kryptonite, so hear hear to minimal counting... xD
Hi Eunice! I really enjoy the vibe of your videos (the energy is good) and being able to pick up tidbits and advice from projects you’ve knit. Thanks for recording 😊
As someone with "older cat that is laying on the mantle who occasionally pushes something off just to see how others react out of boredom" energy, your puppy dog energy is a really enjoyable treat! Lol! I haven't tried socks because I keep some things on my needles for a really long time, and fear the second sock would have a different tension and lots of mistakes. But I am getting closer to trying a pair. We'll see. Lots of love from the Pacific Northwest 🧡
HAHA "older cat that is laying on the mantle who occasionally pushes something off...." omgosh. People like me need people like you. xD I'm so glad you're here. haha!
Thank you for yet another great podcast! You're such a joy to be around. Honestly, you really have this "lovely friend you can be yourself around and have great fun" vibe. That's really sweet of you to want to pronounce names properly. I know I don't mind getting my name butchered (I'm a French native who used to live in the US), but I can understand how some people may feel differently. Also, GREAT news on your husband's request! I think matchy-matchy father-daughters are so darn cute!
Aw yay! Thank you so much for coming back to the channel. HAHA That's is a wonderful vibe to give off - I'm so glad you feel that way here. :D Despite my desire to pronounce things correctly, the truth is that I am terrible at it.. haha. And yes! I am very much looking forward to seeing my husband and daughter matching together. :)
I am so excited your husband requested a garment. Your enthusiasm :) inspired me to put the junior and men''s version on queue for my family. I am envisioning all of us wearing one on Christmas. If only I can knit faster!
I've put off knitting my first pair of socks for years( approx 8 yrs 😕) because I couldn't decide how I wanted to make them & which way I would like best. I just KNOW I would get "2nd sock syndrome " for sure! After many years, I finally decided to go with 2 sets of 9 inch needles. I started on one sock, knit the first section. Then, I started my second sock, just doing the first section as well. I started the heel on one, now I'm on the heel on the other. I wanted to learn the 2 at a time, magic loop method, but then started thinking about it... why not just do "2 at a time" but on separate needles"? It's working out really well because I feel like I'm learning one section at a time , then practicing that part again right away on the second sock while it's fresh in my mind! They're still a work in progress, but I know I'll be able to finish them BOTH close to the same time! 😁 I really enjoy watching your channel btw. You do have a fun " puppy" energy about you! 😅
OOOH you are a champ, Joan!! Thank you for sharing your strategy of overcoming that dreaded SSS. I'm glad it's working out well for you! I got some 9" circulars to try it out recently, but my hands are NOT happy with them... haha Nevertheless, I love the suggestions because clearly, it helps the community at large! :D
YOU GOT THIISSS. You can do it. :D I made the DK Vanilla socks by Crazy Sock Lady as my first one and it helped a lot to use heavier weight yarn. I think she might also have a complete video tutorial as well!
I love knitting TAAT and I have a high instep so I make a mini gusset before doing a shadow wrap heel and that accommodates my heel/instep without using heel and gusset. 😊
Ooh I never considered how the height of one's instep may influence the kind of heel that works best for our feet. I am clearly a newer sock knitter... haha! Thank you for your insight!
So happy to have found your podcast (on the recommendation of The Pine Cottage podcast). I feel like I'm sitting to chat with my cousins - you know those cousins who are more like sisters? I'm so impressed with all of your test knitting! Turns out I'm recently local-ish to you! I was just in Tea Leaf Creamery with my toddler this past weekend and never even knew about Buku yarns! Yay to a new podcast and a new yarn store :D
No way!! That's amazing! Yay to Nikol and yay to new local yarn stores! Amanda (at Buku) is the sweetest. Tea Leaf was great too. Hmmm... grabbing a drink at tea leaf then going to Buku? oorrr grabbing some yarn at Buku and sitting down for some iced thai tea and knitting at Tea Leaf... decisions decisions..
I really love your energy and your podcast episodes. A while back, you talked about your Vertices Unite shawl and it inspired me to start my own. The squish has been so satisfying and comforting and I'm so glad I let myself have the joy of casting it on. Also, I've tried 2 at a time socks and I just can't. It didn't enjoy it and couldn't make it past the cuffs lol
"...couldn't make it past the cuffs" LOL. I didn't either. haha! But welcome to the Vertices Unite Shawl Club, Chaylee!! I'm so pleased to hear that it's been enjoyable for you. :D The squish. 100%. Amazing, right?
Right?! I've been getting some great combos (like Mary Janes and clogs with handknits. Sounds adorable!) Maybe I'll take some photos if/when I wear my handknit socks out... haha I'll probably post them on Instagram though - so find me there if you're interested!
Those Woolly knit cones hehehe 😍 And same for me on the KFO Pure Silk!! Felt scraggly at first (totally not what I expected for a pure silk), but knitted up it was 👌🏻
New subscriber here I've been really enjoying your podcast, your energy way of speaking and mannerisms really remind me of a colleague it's like I'm listening to her as if she was as into knitting as me hahaha 😀 For socks to avoid second sock syndrome I do them two at a time but tandem on two different needle sets at the same time. If you've got interchangeables you can use the right size tip on the working end and a smaller one on the feeding end on two different cords. It's really helped me stay focused as I can work up to certain sections one at a time then finish them off at the same time without getting all tangled up and annoyed with trying to do two on the same needles. Super satisfying. If you haven't tried this maybe this could help with the second sock errors you've been experiencing too. Looking forward to more from you love your knits ❤️
Ooh thank you for the suggestion, Amanda! Others have recommended tandem sock knitting as well, but I only have 1 pair of size 1 needles so I kind of gave up on that idea. Your suggestion takes care of that problem for me! Maybe I will try it your way the next time I cast on a pair of socks. I'm also so pleased to hear that my company reminds you of a friend. :) Thank you so much for being here and for taking the time to write! Cheers.
Information for you in your sock quest, you should have a look at the magic heel socks on ravellry. They are really great to knit as well. Love your podcast, you are awesome. ❤
Wait what!? These look so fun and mind-blowing. How do they fit? My trouble with the socks I just finished is that I have extra fabric on the top of my ankle. Do the magic heel socks resolve that issue, you think? Either way, what a super cool and unique way to construct a sock! Thank you so much for sharing, Janet. So glad you're here. :)
I highly recommend trying the shortbread heel by Larkspur Knits. It is an afterthought heel so you could still knit a tube and it fits like a dream. I have seen other says that it fits them very well when a normal afterthought heel doesn’t. I believe it has been published on its own but if not it is in the Taiga Socks pattern that she published on ravelry.
Hi Kayla! You are the second person to recommend this heel to me! I have purchased the Ravelry pattern and plan to try it out soon. :D Thanks for the suggestion!
I would highly recommend two at a time on magic loop. I find a 40” cord works best. It took me a couple of tries…. But I won’t ever go back to one at a time. Love your energy. I can where clogs (Dansko) to work and they’re perfect with hand knit socks in my opinion.
Ahh maybe I just need to give TAAT on magic loop another go and see how it feels. Because I totally see the value of it! Ooh and I think someone else mentioned wearing their hand knit socks with clogs and it looks super adorable. May need to check that out! :)
Have you tried the heels in the "Simple Shortbread Socks" by Lindsey Fowler? I haven't had an afterthought heel fit correctly until I tried those ones. They basically work like a heel flap and gusset but are constructed like an afterthought heel.
Gasp. I have not. But I just looked it up and it sounds like a perfect solution to my issue! Thank you so much, Amanda. You may just be my life-saver. *purchases immediately.*
When I need to be professional at work I wear my hand knit socks with some leather danskos, if I’m not being professional I wear them with sneakers or crocs 😂
Hi Eunice: Great episode, as usual! I only knit cuff down. I learned how to knit socks during the lockdown! I’ve knitted over three dozens in two years after my initial success! Last year was sweater knitting and baby. This year, I started to get my socks knitting mojo back. I’ve knitted two pairs and just starting another. I didn’t understand how I knitted three pair of socks knitting with same Hawthorne finger weight socks yarn held double can yield a very well fitted pair of socks, and yet another color pair would yield a slight looseness around the ankle area of the socks. I unfortunately had a fractured ankle with screws and plates intact, which meant the ankle was a tad skinnier than the one w/o the fracture. Yet, when I knitted the other color of the same line of Hawthorne socks yarn, it was not the case! It fitted very well. I asked the Zoom knitting group at the time, and the prolific knitters couldn’t understand why either. Thank goodness, it does not happen very often. Thanks for sharing! Happy knitting! ❤❤
Thank you so much May Joe. :D Gosh - you are so right... sometimes socks just befuddle me. But it's also true that it's consistent enough that it doesn't discourage me from giving up altogether. :P Glad to have another sock knitter in my viewership! Happy knitting to you!
I think you should try two-at-a-time socks on magic loop again! I knit my socks two-at-a-time (on two circs instead of magic loop) exclusively and it's so nice to have them done at the same time, in the same gauge, and the same length with no counting rows. It does take some practice to feel comfortable so I don't think you should give up yet. I like to work from both ends of the same ball or cake instead of two balls/cakes which you may like too. You just have to remember to flip the ball around when you turn your work to keep the two strands from tangling. Oh, and I like to wear Mary Jane shoes with the hand knit socks.
Mary Janes with hand knit socks!! Omgoodness. That sounds so cute. And thank you for the encouragement to try again.. There are definitely techniques in my knitting arsenal that took several tries to get comfortable with; maybe this will be one of those things! Thanks for the suggestion, Sara!
❤ I too have second sock syndrome, also second sleeve syndrome. I’ve started doing TAAT but I don’t like magic loop either 😂 so I just realised I have to suffer and bear through the boring bits to get to the fun parts! And thanks for sharing new designers (to me), it’s always nice to learn of awesome patterns by people I haven’t heard of before!
Haha "suffer and bear"... ain't that the truth. xD and of course! I'm so happy to share designers that I've come to love who are new to other folks. Makes me feel like I'm doing some good for these talented and wonderful human beings. haha!
Thanks for sharing the experience with the tube socks! I've been thinking of trying it but the fit issue was something I hadn't thought about... I have a higher instep and that's likely to cause an issue. If your instep is low, I assume the tube socks could be a better fit.
Absolutely! I consider myself to be a fairly new sock knitter - my experience is quite limited - but I am more than happy to take you guys along for the journey. haha!
My socks have to be heel flap & gusset, and cuff-down, or they don't fit right. My one pair of afterthought socks never fit me properly. I also hate doing toe-up. (I don't do magic loop though, I only like DPN socks.) I think the word you were looking for to describe the silk/cashmere/wool yarn is "fibrous".
YES. Fibrous. That is totally the word. xD And the consensus seems to be that heel flap and gusset fits most generally well. Bless you for tackling those DPNs though... I can't seem to get used to them!
If you don't like doing your socks two at a time, you could try knitting them in tandem. Cast on the first cuff, then the second cuff, knit the leg, then the other leg, etc.🧦
It seems like that's the way to go! I've gotten so many comments suggestion this very thing. I currently only have 1 set of needles that are the correct size for my socks... but perhaps this is the excuse I need to get another set of sock needles? :P
I suffer REALLY hard with second sock syndrome. I have like 6 'one sock wonders'; however, I learned from Stephanie from (edible thought makes) that she does socks in tandem and that method has worked SO well for me. In theory, I like TAAT but I hate the weight of having both socks on my needles. ALSO, I too am testing the resource raglan!! I love your version and that color is SO pretty. I 100% agree with you... Sarah's pattern is CRAZY and AMAZING. Is it awkward to ask if we can be friends??? I'm so happy I found another Korean knitter in so cal :D
Yeahhh you are now maybe the 3rd? 4th? person to recommend knitting 2 socks in tandem (without it all being on 1 long cord) and maybe that's the thing to try! Although... does it mentally count as 2 WIPS?? or just 1....? Hmm. In any case, I'm glad to see fellow testers here, and Korean So-Cal ones at that! There are many folks I've adopted as "internet friends" without even asking for permission soo.... not awkward at all. :)
"It's been awhile" 😂 nope. I have binged your episodes and love them! As a tube girl, I suggest you make the cuff and heel first and then try them on! Then you will figure out better how many rows and get a better fit for the toe!
You can also "steek" the too big ones at the toe and kitchener them back together so they fit. Maybe try knitting a little smaller-a few rows because they do stretch!!!
LOL girl. Thank you for being here. hahaha and ooooh cutting the toe and kitchenering it shorter is a genius idea. Maybe that's what I need to do until I find my "magic numbers."
With your tube socks I don’t think you should do the heel and gusset. I think @knittingtraditions does the heel the same as the tube when doing tube socks. She also does tube socks one at a time so that each sock is cast on at the cuff.
Yes! I think I'm going to only do cuff down for 1 sock at a time the next time I try tube socks. And you're right - I would not recommend doing a heel flap and gusset as an afterthought method. Thanks for commenting!
Right? And don't get me started on when folks try to SPELL my name.... mmhmm. maybe I should share about that in its own video.. haha! But thank you for your encouragement about my husband's sweater! Hopefully it will get done in 2023. xD
Hi Eunice! I thought I’d fill you in on the pronunciation of Maven. And I’m only doing this 1.) To put you out if your misery when you show it in future episodes ; and 2.) Because you said you try very hard to say people’s names correctly. No, maven is not a person’s name, but still. So, “maven” is a word that has become really popular in North American English over the last few decades. It is a Yiddish word, meaning “expert, connoisseur”. As in, “I can’t sew worth beans, but he’s a real maven.” Also, Yiddish is in the Germanic family of languages, but about 5-10% of the words have their origins in Hebrew. “Maven” is the present tense singular of the Hebrew verb “to understand “. But, how is it pronounced? Like the Yiddish version…MAYven, as in the month of May, stress on the 1st syllable. Rhymes with “I’m cravin’ some ice cream.” Okay, more than you bargained for 😂. Loving all that you do!
ummm THANK YOU for this information! Fun fact: I was a linguistics major in college, so this etymology lesson was absolutely delightful! Can you please watch all of my episodes and provide historical context alongside the correct pronunciation for all the words I butcher?? K.Thnx. :)
@@therapybycraft LOL! Naw…that would be soooo obnoxious! I, too, love languages (and minored in linguistics at university). Not particularly good at them, but so fascinating. At the moment, I’m deeply into Norwegian on Duolingo…it’s really close to English. And just so my brain explodes, I’m also doing Yiddish and some German on that app. All Germanic languages-yikes! Like playing with knives! Take care!
Counting is my kryptonite, so hear hear to minimal counting... xD
I love your energy and really liked spending time watching you and your knits today. Love all the new yarn you fit … beautiful colors ❤😍
thank you so much Taciana! I'm so glad you found your way to my little corner of TH-cam. :)
Hi Eunice! I really enjoy the vibe of your videos (the energy is good) and being able to pick up tidbits and advice from projects you’ve knit. Thanks for recording 😊
hi there!! absolutely. :) thanks so much for tuning in
Obsessed with the mom and me matching 😍😍
Lol same. It is a disease. I just hope Sam will wear them.. Hah!

(I don't do magic loop though, I only like DPN socks.) I think the word you were looking for to describe the silk/cashmere/wool yarn is "fibrous".
YES. Fibrous. That is totally the word. xD
And the consensus seems to be that heel flap and gusset fits most generally well.
LOL girl. Thank you for being here. hahaha
and ooooh cutting the toe and kitchenering it shorter is a genius idea.
People say my name wrong all the time, so I get it. I can't wait to see your husband's zipper sweater!
Take care!
