I've always seen dancing as a form of entertainment, but Lil Buck has made it an art form that is as moving as Beethoven. I wish he knew the amazing energy he produces and how wonderful it is to be on the receiving end of it. The world has been made more beautiful for his being in it.

I have a thing about dance. I don’t know what it is. I don’t even really have the vocabulary to write about it, but I’m going to try. Lil Buck’s performance in the above is about 4 minutes. His vocabulary, in this piece, is a perfect synthesis of jookin, a form of Memphis hip-hop, and ballet. As he ascends the escalator in the museum, it’s as if he is floating, weightless in the space around him. He doesn't seem bound by the conventional rules of gravity. His body moves in ways I’ve never seen before, but I immediately recognize it. The lighting is hot and white like the interiors of 2001: A Space Odyssey. He is an astronaut, he is otherworldly. It is the type of beauty that reaches “into my veins.” He pirouettes as he passes Matisse's “The Dance”-- a painting that is so famous it is now a trope of celebration, and his spin elevates the image and then transcends it. But there is more. The music crescendos as he enters the main room with a large Picasso painting, Cubist, but I don't know the name of it. But it is a deconstructing of form into something new. Lil Buck does the same thing with his body through a series of balletic isolations, and then another pirouette, this one closer to the ground, and then he is gone.
He is way too underrated. People see Baryshnikov doing modern dance as a ballet dancer and think he is so versatile. Why doesn't Lil Buck get the same credit for taking street dance and mixing it with ballet and other movement forms? I think his range of movement and style far outweighs Baryshnikov.
