Hi, Berta! Thank you for subscribing to my channel! Can you DM me on my FB or IG chat, or email me @ fsuwono@gmail.com to discuss the mechanical de-huller? Terimakasih! Francius
Haha..! I agree with you, Michael. Tempeh is green gold. You can make this de-huller yourself, with the help of a good metal machining shop to make the rollers substitute made of aluminum. It may cost 3-4 hrs of their service but it is worth it. Francius
Hi, thank you for this tips! I also have a malt mill I originally bought for beer and now use to crack soy for Tempeh - dry beans fracture into smaller size bits and than, when washing, the hulls just float, more so than when using the traditional dehulling method. Do you have some particular reasons for not using cracked soy in Tempeh? Just wondering out of couriosity =)
Hi! You are doing dry de-hulling which cracks whole dry beans into smaller pieces, maybe into 4-5 pieces, then wash or blow away the skin. It is fine and that is the way dry de-hulling is done. I am doing wet de-hulling, which leaves the beans in whole halves. It is a matter of preference, and it is how old-time tempeh is de-hulled. I love to see tempeh with whole halves of beans. Don't forget when you wash the cracked dry beans you wash away not only the skin but also a lot of tiny bits of beans. Wet de-hulling keeps the beans intact. Both tempeh is the same, only whole halves of beans tempeh look more beautiful. But, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, not on the tempeh itself! Keep improvising!
I have a friend who wants to sell his new custom de-huller I made for him. Email me if you are interested at fsuwono@gmail.com so I can connect you directly. Francius
I have the one from 2:47 minute mark. I use it to dehull the soybeans dry, it spits them to about 3 pieces. Why isnt this recommended to use this one? I am not exposing it to liquid so I dont think it will rust
There are two kinds of de-hulling: dry de-hulling and wet de-hulling. In dry de-hulling, you break the dry beans into smaller pieces and blow away the hulls using a fan. The breaking of the beans will also create smaller bits that will be blown away by the air and the result is not halved beans, but broken beans. Broken beans will make the same tempeh as whole halved beans de-hulled using wet de-hulling. It's only a matter of preference. The problem is you can't hardly crush 1 kg of dry beans in half an hour as opposed to de-hulling wet using the shown de-huller. The shown wet de-huller can split 1 kilogram of beans in just 3 minutes. The call is yours. Francius
@@francius1003I'm guessing that halved beans has more space between them because they are only big blocks, no tiny pieces to fill the gaps. So... more mycelium produced? 🤔 So more protein produced? (At least I wish, lol) It would be interesting to see the nutritional compositions of the soy beans and the mycelium parts of the tempehs.

Hello from Australia, Thanks for this video. I bought this exact same mill recently and have been thinking how to best modify the rollers. I'll give your design a go. Do you mind if I ask you what dimension your smooth passive roller is? Thanks
Hi, Hilal! The roller's outer dimensions follow the original rollers. The only difference is the new rollers are without 12 TPI knurls. The new active roller now has six ribs 0.1 inch high, instead of knurls, the passive roller is just plain smooth. Both are made of aluminum, to makes them easy to manufacture. Stainless steel is overkill for soybeans. Good luck trying!
Hi Francius, Would there a be a way for me to get a custom set of rollers from you, or from the machine shop your hired to make them? I take it they still have your specs? Another possibility would be I to take your specs to a local machine shop in my area. Thanks, Steffan

I am sorry I did not show the result explicitly in this video. But I did show full de-hulling process in another video: th-cam.com/video/noQk2kqgQcQ/w-d-xo.html at 6:15. Thank you for watching.
Pak Francius ,

Hi Pak Francius, thanks for your wisdom! Any chance you'd make and ship custom dehullers or just the custom roller parts?
Alternatively, would it work if I bought a malt mill with an adjustable roller gap?

@@bixlord Small pieces or big pieces produce the same protein. The difference is only on how to prepare them.
I like to watch your tempeh business.
Hi, Neena! Good to hear that! Do you make tempeh? Try it! It's fun and healthy!

Instead of tempeh i prepared namkeen & all.But i will try this.Actually we grow soyabean in our farm.
i have never heard of dehulling after being boiled, but I am only a few mths int making my own tempeh
Cheers
Boiling for 30 minutes before de-hulling to make the hulls loose. That's how wet de-hulling is done.

It is not shown in the video. The beans just split in halves and the hull separated.
