This book was SO good and so much fun, I was way more invested in the bugs too - and I was rooting for the spiders 😂

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I liked the first 2/3 and loved the last 1/3 of the book. I really connected with the ideas of generational memory and empathy. I didn’t think it was possible to be so engaged by spiders!
I am actually starting a Tchaikovsky book this evening called Dogs of War. I hope I enjoy it just as much!

Great review! I went into this book largely blind, particularly had no idea about the spiders, and at first I thought they'd be a temporary part of the story. I kept thinking, "Hmmm... so when will he move on from this spider story?" and then about halfway through, I was like "OH, this IS the story!" Such a unique and thought provoking book.

Butler's "Xenogenesis" also known as "Lilith's Brood", but I don't think I was ready fot it as a project, but I really loved her short stories from "Bloodchild and Other Stories" ( one of her 2 nonfiction Essays made me cry). Deffinetely considering both Tchaikovsky and Mieville. Next month I will try one of Ursula Le Guin's SF from the "Hanish Cycle". Happy reading to you!

Dude. This is such a good book. It was one of my favorite reads of 2022. I just finished Children of Ruin a couple days ago. It was fine, but i really didn't connect with any of the characters until the very end. The whole story is basically the same as CoT. I will read Children of Memory eventually but I'm not in a hurry.

For what it’s worth I thought Ruin was a step down but he returned to brilliance with Memory. If you liked the ant battles you may enjoy Empire of the Ants by Bernard Werber.

One of my favorite overarching themes of this book (as someone who doesn't usually have the ability to even recognize themes, much less discuss them) was how he handled the religious aspects of forming a religion around this unseen "Messiah" figure. I thought it was really neat the way he presented it and handled that.
Unfortunately i didnt care much at all for Children of Ruin, but i will continue sometime soon with Children of Memory. Glad you had such a great time reading this one!

Lucky me not being afraid of bugs. Then again if I saw a spider the size of a small dog walking around I'm gonna assume it's poisonous, bolt and leave a me shaped hole in the wall.

I rolled my eyes anytime I had to read chapter from human perspective. People were poorly written, spiders much better. I also didn't like the ending.
I find the book overrated and same with Dogs of War whose cover promises deep existential and moral questions but in the end that aspect of the story was as shallow as a puddle. Seems to me like Tchaikovsky comes up with great ideas but doesn't have the talent to make them truly shine and instead drowns them in mediocre/slightly above average writing and characterization.
