Alternative Intersections: Median U-Turns

  • The Median U-Turn (MUT) intersection is an innovative, proven solution for improving safety and mobility at intersections. At a MUT intersection, direct left turns are replaced with a downstream U-turn followed by a right-turn.

    Got interested in the comments. Putting a roundabout on a major arterial road will just make a screwed up traffic mess. 3 lane roundabout should only be used as gimmicks. It's best to use the newer options to better intersections but it also helps to sign the intersection well for best results.

    NC here. When making a left uturn, which lane do I turn into? The right or keep left? I'd be keeping straight and eventually turning left shortly. I'm finding conflicting answers.

    It's odd that the description is inaccurate. To complete the Left Turn, you must pass through the intersection, Signal a Left turn, Make a U-Turn, then signal Right and Change Lanes multiple times to get into the Right Turning Lane to Turn Right. There is added complexity that the description leaves out.

    • @acceleratedsloth
      @acceleratedsloth ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no need to change the lanes as you can and actually in most cases should turn into the correct lane straight away

    Monroe NC here. These suck! Nobody understands how to use them correctly (human laziness) and there have been more accidents since it went in than when there was an actual stop light. Not to mention the traffic they have caused. Lot of taxpayer money spent for nothing.

      At such capacities a standard roundabout is unsuitable. A 3 lane turbo roundabout might be suitable, but they are unsuitable for pedestrians and cyclists so you need grade separation.

    Your not stopping a left turn, your just adding a right turn to it. Bored engineers of the world, put your framed degree down and realize even if you had an unlimited budget, and could make every intersection in the US a freeway style exchange, where noone had to stop, or move perpendicular to traffic flow, one fact will always remain. People are friggin stupid.

    • @wschmrdr
      @wschmrdr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The argument has nothing to do with stupidity, but rather how much time it takes to get through an intersection. Unless, of course, you consider impatience to be stupidity, in which case to each his own accord.

    Why not leave things the way they have always worked ? Add more lanes when traffic increases... They want to avoid putting in more lanes for the increased traffic which is what they really should do. They are bent on CONTROLLING our driving rather than accommodating us as drivers and constituents. They want to go for the "new" "Innovative" thing rather than tried and true methods of working for their constituents.

    • @joejones5653
      @joejones5653 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      These U-turns are more efficient because light timing is easier to achieve and traffic flows much easier instead of having to wait through two or three light cycles to turn left..

      @SnownelVEVO 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      "They are bent on CONTROLLING our driving rather than accommodating us as drivers and constituents." Calm down there Alex Jones. More lanes isn't always feasible and doesn't solve the problem of left turn traffic that Michigan lefts try to fix.
