  • Finnish Army Simulator is actually a surprisingly realistic military simulator about Basic Military Training! 10/10 Recruits would agree and immediately do 20 pushups. Let's get to it!

"Nönnönnöö" is Finnish conscript jargon that basically means "Such-an-such". Often used in examples of undescript, unspecific servicemen, usually recruits. Alokas Nönnönnöö = Recruit Such-and-such. There's a crapload of in-jokes in this game that you can only really understand, if you've been in the Finnish Army. Nönnönnöö being one such in-joke.
And as for pronouncing it. Yours was pretty good, just drop in a bunch of Ös in there. It's essentially a mix of "OE".

English has that vowel but they don't distinguish it. Like Heard sounds Höörd to us, Bird is Böörd, Sir is Söör etc.
For Ä cat = khät, bat = bät, sad = sääd etc

It is from Latin, nomen nescio or n. n. (name unknown) which neeeds wovels to be able to be pronounced in Finnish. Therefore nön nön, originally än än, which has developed into nönnönnöö.

From how you describe officer cadets I take it you have some kind of pre-military service program that people who want to follow such a career take part in.
Not so in Finland. We all join as recruits and after basic training is over (2 months) you are selected for your future training. You can make your own wishes for what you want, but it's the professional military staff that make the actual decisions, largely based on your results during basic training and judging what each individual could be suited for.
The most basic roles such as regular infantry or artillerymen serve for half a year. Specialized roles like medics for 9 and those selected as drivers or for leadership roles 1 year. I believe it's been shortened by half a month for each of them since I served but it's something like that.
So for example if you're highly motivated and score well in theoretical and practical tests, you're almost certainly getting selected for leadership training. No matter what you want yourself, which causes some people to sabotage their own results to avoid having to serve for a year.
But before I go off on another tangent, this group selected for leadership training all get sent to NCO school where they will be trained to become NCOs for a specific company, so for example mortar company NCOs, engineer NCOs etc.
A few months into the NCO training, those who score the highest among this group get sent to "reserve officer school" where they will start training to become officers.
6 months into service NCO school ends and those who took part are promoted to corporals. The new batch of recruits arrive and the corporals are tasked with teaching them the very basics of how to behave in the military and knowledge you need as well as making sure the recruits get where they need to go, in time, with the right gear. Any "real" training is held by the professional staff which consists of a few NCOs of sergeant rank and above and a few officers of ranks up to a captain who's usually in charge of the company. Over the next 6 months these new recruits become the privates in squads led by the corporals.
A few weeks after the new recruits arrived, reserve officer school ends and those who went there return to their units as officer cadets. Technically they outrank sergeants but professional staff are still above them regardless of rank.
These officer cadets become the platoon leaders of the company leading the corporals who are leading the new recruits.
After 12 months when military service is over for everybody, the officer cadets are promoted to 2nd lieutenants and a handful of corporals are promoted to sergeants before everybody is moved into the reserve.
If you want to become a higher rank officer, NCO or such you'll have to become a career soldier after that and go to the "Finnish National Defence University".
Your rank in the reserve can also increase over the years based on how many refreshment trainings you participate in.

    • @PanzerPaw
      @PanzerPaw  ปีที่แล้ว +15

So what I was referring to was in the Singapore army, where everyone goes through basic and then those selected for officer training go to Officer Cadet School (OCS) and take on the Officer Cadet rank. This is where even a Recruit rank can outrank you in some cases.
While we do also have a cadet corps (junior cadet program for school students, not in the military), that's separate to what I was talking about here.
I've only now just realised how different Finland's military organisation is and where there can be confusion haha

We use to sing while marching in formation but it has been cut back. One reason is that some of the songs would be considered "problematic" these days. For example there is this one song we use to sing and its about invading and colonizing a neighboring country while burning everyone with napalm. We also used to sing actual military marches like the Jäger March and had to learn it by memory.

The one thing about organizing your locker is that so long as everything *looks* good in unison when inspected from outside, its all good. Lets say for example you had a wool shirt that you can fold so that it can be placed to cover an entire shelf from the locker, and it was folded neatly so that it appears sharp when inspected. What you have there is essentially a concealed compartment into which you can toss literally anything, so long as it doesnt seem out of place during inspections.

The officer candidates are reserve officers in training. They are going to become the officers of the unit you are recruit at. They have started their service half a year before you. They over rank the corporals and other conscript NCO's and they get promoted as 2nd lieutenant (res) the day they are released from the initial service to the reserves. The NCO already get promoted to their reserve rank before their conscripts enter the service. They can be promoted to sergeant (res) during the rest of their initial service. All the career military that train the troops have started as doing their conscript service and then applied to become career officers or NCO. So there are basically 2 different tiers of people and the whole nuance of it cannot be explained in one TH-cam comment. 😅

And please, if you talk to your superior, don't leave them hanging, know their ranks at least, but I'd rather remain silent than calling them sir, that's a no-no and might lead you to punishment.

"There's no way that was enough time" I do believe that is the point of the exercise.
On a separate, somewhat related note, have you ever seen a TV series called "Bad Lads Army"? If not, I'd recommend giving it a look. It's pretty dated but still a good watch. A long time ago in a galaxy far fa...... wait..... no..... a long time ago, in the UK time at a military training camp was an alternative to prison time. The idea being as a form of rehabilitation and to try and avoid re-offending, and I guess in the hopes that some of the refromees would go on to join the British Army and fill up the numbers after doing their time. Anyways, they made a TV show of it, called bad lads army, that's a pretty decent watch.

    Monday: Cabbage casserole
    Tuesday: Potato & anchovy casserole
Wednesday: Klimppisoppa (dir. transl. "loogie soup") - A traditional dish prepared by brewing a broth of beef bones and other less valued parts of the carcass, then adding clots of wheat dough.
Thursday: Pea soup (It's actually an old Swedish and Finnish tradition to have pea soup on thursdays)
    Friday: Snausage soup
    Saturday: Smooth pork sausage soup
Sunday: Smooth pork sausage soup (probably leftovers because nobody wants to work on sundays)
