The aeropress was not cheap. It got me hooked on making really good coffee and I ended up having to buy a grinder and I started roasting my own coffee. I have even started buying collectible coffee pots off of eBay. The aeropress has cost me several hundred dollars. It is still one of my favorites.
It's definitely a gateway drug. I bought the Aeropress and some compact hand grinder in kit form for something like $AUD 100, "to see what all the noise is about". I've probably dropped about $AUD 500 on various coffee bits and pieces since, not including beans.
that was my gateway too! my mom found it in a cabinet at her old work and nobody was using it so I got it for christmas. Have spent loads of money on coffee now.
I gifted my father an ember mug last year for Christmas and he absolutely loved it. He works in an office environment and is always interrupted for one thing or another, and he describes it as magical to sit back down, and be pleasantly surprised that his coffee maintained his desired temperature.
Holy shit. Just found this channel, then saw the World Atlas of Coffee recommendation and figured I recognised the book. True as nuts it's the one I've borrowed from work. It's a really good book. Breaks things down from plant to cup and everything in between. Simple language and it will really improve your knowledge and appreciation of good coffee. The channel has really dialled up the nerd in me to max.
Just got an aeropress for my good friend who is dipping his toes into the coffee world. Can't wait to watch him descend into madness like the rest of us.
James didn't mention! SIGNED copies (yes, signed by James) of the World Atlas of Coffee are affordable and available from Square Mile - with shipping from the UK it's comparable to the current (non-signed) Amazon US price. Whether as a special touch for a friend, or just a fanboy piece for yourself, it's really nice to have some physical manifestation of one of our favorite TH-camrs. Honestly, a few weeks ago I paid $36 with shipping (a dollar less than Amazon's current US price). Exchange rates may have changed though. Sorry James if this comment makes your wrist hurt, Merry Christmas and THANKS for your Video!!
I don't celebrate Christmas, but this video reminds me of SO's gift for me from sometime ago. A small Vietnam Drip. She knew that i was turning into a coffee geek, and it was a perfect gift for me who wanted to learn other ways to brew a good cup. I still use it to this day.
Very fitting that I open up TH-cam to find this video immediately after sending photos of your books to my boyfriend to let his parents know what to buy me for Christmas.
I got an AeroPress once. Best Christmas ever, and indeed that started my love for good coffee. I'm still using it. P.S. Love that smile. It's the best gift you could possibly give to us.
Big thumbs up for Ember. It's one of those products that you don't expect to get the value from and then do in spades. Great customer service as well. They just released a V2 with a longer battery life as well so...bonus. Also, got my dad an aeropress in 2005 and it really sparked his coffee journey all the way to this year where he took on espresso and is doing well with his handmedown gaggia machine.
Got in to home roasting last year. The wife and I went to an Ethiopian restaurant and the owners served coffee and they had 5 lb bags of unroasted coffee. Decided to grab one and play with it. Started on stovetop. Then air popper. And now Behmor. So now giving gifts to coffee drinking friends/family is fairly easy. 12-14oz bags of beans (or grind for them if they want) I get to put them in a valve bag and seal them up. Maybe tape a label of what is in it and what date it was roasted. 1 lb of unroasted beans usually costs me anywhere from $5-8 most of the time (and results in 12-14oz roasted). The bags are stupid fresh. And unlike my wife that is very crafty, giving a handmade gift is not something I'm usually able to do. But can now. I ordered 40 lbs of beans last month to make sure I had enough for myself and friends/family. Probably about time to give the roaster a good cleaning though :p
I've found that people are quite happy with the glass KeepCup variant, or other glass reusable cups! Doesn't make coffee taste weird and it keeps coffee at a nice temp longer than a basic cup, but not eternally hot like a thermos. A friend of mine loves it in his car because it minimises spills and makes his hour drive to work more enjoyable. Another welcome gift for those who don't care about grinding their own coffee, or those who perhaps buy bags of pre-ground for their office/desk is one of those clips with a spoon attached, to keep the bag sealed and a spoon always on hand.
My sister bought this for me about 6 months ago. Absolutely fascinating book but I have no idea what to do with 90% of the knowledge it contains! It's lovely to flick through and read a few paragraphs at random while waiting for the kettle to boil, french press to brew or the espresso machine to warm up.
I read through it but was thoroughly bored. Good reference but not a page-turner. Item returned to Amazon.. However, “The Devils Cup - Coffee, the Driving Force in History” by Stewart Lee Allen is hilarious, entertaining, and adventurous. Recommend me a more entertaining coffee history book. I dare you!
I only started drinking coffee in May of 2021, just a few weeks before my 45th birthday. Prior to that, I'll be honest, I absolutely hated coffee. Loathed it with a passion is not an exaggeration. However, my tastes have changed both after I gave up smoking and as I have aged. It has since become a bit of an obsession if I'm honest, as is watching all these amazing videos. I talk so much about James and his brilliant videos, that my partner bought me an AeroPress several weeks ago. She jokingly (perhaps not so jokingly) commented that she heard me talk about it so much I might as well have one. Love it and next on my wish is a decent hand grinder and beans to get me to the next step on my journey.
May have already suggested to my husband that I would like a copy of the World Atlas of Coffee. I'll be giving coffee to family this year from some of my favorite local shops that also roast, Mighty Oak and Kinship, in Astoria, NY.
It’s that time of the year again and Holidays are coming! Thanks for the recommendations! It’s truly amazing to present the original gift that is connected to coffee ☕️and it’s great to see this sweater on the channel!
I can’t get enough of this channel. I’m into cards as well and those decks looked fantastic. Going to check out some of these gifts. Thanks again James. Cheers.
Bialetti Moka pots seem to be on the up & up, they’re inexpensive and beautiful I think they’re a great gift. Also the lid makes it look kinda like a Santa Claus hat. Merry Sipmas.
I was surprised not to see a single pound of coffee in the stocking stuffers category! Easy and delicious, and a great way to broaden the horizons of someone just getting into coffee :)
Some friends gave me an aeropress for my 30th birthday, five years ago. It was the beginning of my coffee journey. Totally agree with yr suggestion here, James
James!! I have a recommendation: KINTO to go tumble. I got this for myself and started to use it these days. The cap is just so well designed for sipping and the cup itself has great great texture and keeps my coffee hot. Every cafe that I went with this cup, this cup just got so many compliments! So I think it might be a good coffee gift :)
The Ember mug is also a great gift for any new parents in your life! Had a baby six months ago and my cups of coffee are forever being interrupted part way through. Thankfully my best friend kindly bought me the Ember, and it has been invaluable.
Couriers seem to charge a premium to US companies trying to export, which is maddening and inconsistently applied. It must be deeply frustrating for store owners there
Wow, thanks James! How refreshing it was to watch an "inexpensive" gift guide video that actually apologized for a gift over $100. Typically the cheapest gift tends to be somewhere around that price. Cheers!
Thank you! Great gift ideas - for me😁 I have been asked to produce a list of items I would like for birthday/Christmas - and got stuck. Then you come along and presents a list which is spot on👍☕️
A couple of years a go, I drank exclusively instant coffee, mainly because I wanted the caffeine fix. But I did start to enjoy the taste. Then, for Christmas, my parents bought me an Aeropress. I though it was the most naff piece of junk I had ever seen, another kitchen gadget to never be used. However, a year and a bit on and I have grown into a massive coffee nerd. I cannot recommend it enough for such a reasonable price!
"This smile. I will protect this smile. I will fight you for this smile. You will not hurt this smile. For you see, there are things in life worth protecting. Some things worth living for. Some things worth dying for. A smile like this can thaw the iciest hearts, dispel the darkest of evils and win the mightiest of wars. This smile is the thing that will pull us from the depths of despair and lead us to the path of salvation. Wars will be fought, people will be saved and civilizations will prosper because of this smile! So from this day forward, I solemnly swear to shield this smile of all harm that can come to it, all dangers it can possibly face and give my life for it!"
I got your book today. it has been a while since I read a book last time (cuz I hate reading), but I can't stop reading this book. thank you for the recommendation.
I have been looking for that spoon ever since watching your videos.. appears I have skipped over this video.. glad I went back and started watching all from the beginning! Thank you much! P.s. I have forever enjoyed the mm hundreds.. I have spent on coffee stuff since watching your amazing videos. I have enjoyed waking up and getting ready to make a delicious cup of coffee 👍🏽😁
Nice Sweater ☕️ Enjoying Your Videos as always , regarding your book it's truly a very well written book and one of the best books about coffee period.♥️ Love from Abha
I am thinking about doing a coffee gift box for a family member which comes with different coffee and chocolates on a certain holiday. I honestly love receiving coffee myself I'd accept that gift over a lot of things. I also have a coffee bar and always need something to make my coffee bar better.
i bought the coffee Atlas for my Dad. he was so happy an read the book in about a week. thanks for such great book. and btw. the cover looks and feels really nice
That smile after recommending the Coffee Atlas was priceless. Haha
A cheeky smile!
Oh man, I rewatched that bit after reading this; holy hell was that a great smile
I could have sworn there was a glint from his teeth when he did that!
I don't mind, I prefer this, than being paid by marketers from other companies to endorse their stuff.

James wearing that sweater is a gift to my eyes
HululusLabs best jumper ever!
@james - would be great to let us know the brand of that awesome sweater 🙏🏽
James is a gift to me
James is the king of not only coffee, but fetching sweaters as well 👑

😂😂😂
Same route I took. From an Aeropress to Capresso burr grinder to Behmor roaster over a period of a few years.
that was my gateway too! my mom found it in a cabinet at her old work and nobody was using it so I got it for christmas. Have spent loads of money on coffee now.
not gonna lie, if wasnt aeropress, i wont be watching James' video right now. It got me into the world of coffee :)
Thanks for the endorsement James - that's quite a Christmas present in iteslf!
I gifted my father an ember mug last year for Christmas and he absolutely loved it. He works in an office environment and is always interrupted for one thing or another, and he describes it as magical to sit back down, and be pleasantly surprised that his coffee maintained his desired temperature.
That "conflict of interest" smile :D
4:09 - the smile that sold me on getting that book as a gift :p

Wow, slow down, Satan.
That handsome smile won't make me buy The World Atlas of Coffee... cuz I've got one already!
Man I love James’ channel.. the videos have a peaceful quality about them.. haven’t missed one in a long long time.

The World Atlas of Coffee was hands down the best gift I received last year. I find myself flipping through it almost every day!
My sister bought me the Coffee Atlas last Christmas. Was the best gift I've gotten in years.
This is, honestly, so timely! I was trying to look for gifts for someone close, who would like to really get into coffee
I don't celebrate Christmas, but this video reminds me of SO's gift for me from sometime ago. A small Vietnam Drip.
She knew that i was turning into a coffee geek, and it was a perfect gift for me who wanted to learn other ways to brew a good cup. I still use it to this day.
If I can add on the gift idea a fast water filtration like the aquasana and a kettle with adjustable temperature is a pretty good idea too!
Aeropress is my go to present, gave it a lot of times to friends and family, and they love it
Oh, the amount of AeroPresses I've gifted...but from this list, I'd like the espresso cups and a jumper like the one James is wearing.
Imagine going to your local coffee shop and hearing Hoffman’s through the sound system, guiding you to your best cup of coffee.
I can vouch for The World Atlas of Coffee - it does an amazing job of explaining every detail of specialty coffee in good detail!
Just ordered a couple spoons from Umeshiso. Thank you for recommending! Happy that these spoons come directly from a coffee person
Got in to home roasting last year. The wife and I went to an Ethiopian restaurant and the owners served coffee and they had 5 lb bags of unroasted coffee. Decided to grab one and play with it. That's a pretty cool idea 💡 😎
Love all of them! Especially the Aeropress. It really is one of the most perfect things to happen to coffee.
I've found that people are quite happy with the glass KeepCup variant, or other glass reusable cups! Gift recommendation for the espresso lover: A distribution tool (leveler).
I just got one and I love mine.
James, I gift you this comment in appreciation of your work, knowledge and personality in general. Thank you for the things you share!
About 4 seconds after James showed the cover of Coffee: A Global History it was already purchased on Amazon.
My sister bought this for me about 6 months ago. Absolutely fascinating book but I have no idea what to do with 90% of the knowledge it contains! It's lovely to flick through and read a few paragraphs at random while waiting for the kettle to boil, french press to brew or the espresso machine to warm up.
@@rossmaclean2 that's exactly what I hope people will do - enjoy.
thank you
I read through it but was thoroughly bored. Good reference but not a page-turner. Item returned to Amazon.. However, “The Devils Cup - Coffee, the Driving Force in History” by Stewart Lee Allen is hilarious, entertaining, and adventurous. Recommend me a more entertaining coffee history book. I dare you!
I totally agree about that Coastline scale. I have three scales including a Hario, and the Coastline is the most responsive. $13 on Amazon is a steal.
The aeropress is how I got into specialty coffee, very nice little brewer.
Oh, that cheesy grin! "The World Atlas of Coffee" Solid gold moment right there!
If I buy an Aeropress for my friend can I point them in the direction of a James Hoffman Aeropress video soon?
Exactly. Or even better, the first in a series
A year later and the answer is still no.
Now you can!
5 of them!

Coffee gifts are perfect, they help with the daily grind, filtering out all the buzz
You espress yourself so well.
Rick Nygren so I’ve bean told
Definitely going to use these suggestions...for myself!
This is not only allowed, but encouraged!
Same lol
Ordered a "Hoffman Christmas" deal from Knock. Don't have an Areopress, nor burr grinder. So.. no-brainer perfect package purchase.
May have already suggested to my husband that I would like a copy of the World Atlas of Coffee. I'll be giving coffee to family this year from some of my favorite local shops that also roast, Mighty Oak and Kinship, in Astoria, NY.
Your description of reasons to get someone the World Atlas of Coffee is the exact reason I read it and I completely agree
It’s that time of the year again and Holidays are coming! Thanks for the recommendations! It’s truly amazing to present the original gift that is connected to coffee ☕️and it’s great to see this sweater on the channel!

Cafflano Klassik was the best coffee gift I ever was gifted. Great all in one way of getting someone into pour over coffee
Honestly might even treat myself to one of those coffee books you’ve recommended
since i already own the coffee atlas i just ordered myself the history book by Jonathan Morris. Thx for the recommendation James!
@@marcelbee thanks - hope you enjoy it
I’m in love with that spoon and the card designs are so lovely.
I think a gooseneck kettle with a thermometer would be nice for some people that are getting into coffee

For Aeropress owners, the Fellow Prismo is great. No more inverting, no more paper filter, and for me, just much easier process overall.
Wish I had a friend like you with your taste in gifts 🎁
I can vouch for those cheap Amazon scales for my, uh, 'jewelry'.
The Ember mug is also a great gift for any new parents in your life! Had a baby six months ago and my cups of coffee are forever being interrupted part way through. Thankfully my best friend kindly bought me the Ember, and it has been invaluable.
Oh that spoon looks really neat. I think I'll order one for myself

Aeropress plus a Christmas blend bag of beans is always a winner!
I enjoy the Aeropress. I am also a big fan of the Clever Coffee Dripper!
Thank you for including us and we LOVE your sweater!!! Or is it called a jumper in the UK...
Gustatory multi-roaster coffee subscription 👌🏻
I kind of expected/would recommend getting coffee travel cups/tumblers. Everyone uses them, they're cheap, and great for coffee lovers.
Me too. And ones that don't leak!
Lovely video. Thank u for sharing ☺️ as coffee lover myself, I found some ideas useful. Thank u and happy new year 🥳
Love the playing cards! Attention to detail at 100%
Going to buy a Christmas Dúo by Death Brew Café for my lovely wife ♥️🎄 We love coffee, so I think she will love this gift.
My gift choice for christmas was a Kinu M47 Phoenix & Flair Classic. I think this is a great gift for any coffee enthusiast.
The Flair line up is on sale at their own website 12/2/19.
The ember smart mug is the best purchase I’ve made in a long time.

Just bought myself an Aerspeed for Christmas to upgrade from a Porlex, so I heartily agree with your endorsements :)
I have recently discovered your channel and subscribed and I don't even drink coffee... that's how good you are 🙂

Hi James. I'd love to see a video on roasting coffee at home. I know it can be done but I'd love to see your opinion/tutorial on it.
At the last one, when his hands went down, I thought James was going to pull off his jumper!
I still have not finished reading my Coffee Atlas! So far great book! I recommend it to all coffee lovers!
Some strong Christmas jumpering going on here. Approved.

Thanks, James! Aergrind is always a pain in the neck to buy, they are always out of stock. Hopefully I’ll be able to get my hands on it at some point.
I’ve come here from the 2020 gift guide...you know..because one James Hoffmann gift guide is not enough.
